this day with Lotte Lenya headlining the cast

Frank Sinatra records "All Or Nothing At All" with the Harry James
Band. The tune will bomb---until it is reissued four years later after
Sinatra has become much more recognized---when it becomes a major hit

A London Judge fines one Sidney Adams Turner �3 10s for "creating an
abominable noise". The charge is that Sidney threatened his neighbours
shouting "I will drive you mad"----and then proceeded to play "Shake
Rattle And Roll' by Bill Haley & His Comets at full volume for two and
a half hours

Britain (after "Rock Around The Clock")----and no it is NOT by
Elvis----makes it to #1 where it will stay for no less than 9 weeks.
As Diana" by Paul Anka replaces Elvis and "All Shook Up" as the new
British #1 single. (see entry for 1997)

In Nashville this day Brenda Lee wraps up her current session for
Decca with a spirited "When My Dreamboat Comes Home" (with a memorable
sax solo by Boots Randolph) plus "Walkin' To New Orleans" and
"Hallelujah I Love Him So" (which all appear on the "This Is Brenda"
LP) and also "I'm In The Mood For Love" (for the "Emotions" LP)
The Olympics sing "Shimmy Like Kate" on "American Bandstand"

Murray the K hosts the annual Labor Day rock and roll show at the
Brooklyn Fox Theater. Appearing are Ben E. King,The Shirelles,Chuck
Jackson,The Ronettes,Bobby Vinton,The Dovells,Dee Dee Sharp,The
Capris,Tommy Roe,The Marvelettes,The Del Satins,The Majors,Little Eva
and Tony Orlando. The show will run for ten days.
Fabian is paid $2500 for one performance at the Convention Hall in
Asbury Park, New Jersey
Jocko's Rocket Ship Revue at the Apollo theater is headlined by Don
Gardner and Dee Dee Ford. Other artists include Gary U.S. Bonds, The
Contours,The Impressions,Barbara Lynn and the Dreamlovers.

The Angels depose Little Stevie Wonder and "Fingertips-Part 2" in the
#1 slot as "My Boyfiends Back" assumes the position of new best
selling single
AUGUST 31 1976
A judge rules that George Harrison is guilty of copying from the song
"He�s So Fine"---a 1963 #1 hit for The Chiffons.The judge goes on to
say that the chorus to Harrison�s "My Sweet Lord" is identical to
"He�s So Fine". Eventually (appeals will go on for about five years)
this fiasco will cost the former Beatle over half a million dollars.

Exactly 40 years TO THE DAY after Paul Anka's "Diana" first tops the
UK charts the current most famous bearer of that name in the
world---Princess Diana---is killed in a Paris automobile accident this
day in 1997
