England getting a new portrait painted for her 80th birthday. To my
surprise, the reporter announced the artist's name as Rolf Harris!
I grabbed THE BILLBOARD BOOK OF ONE-HIT WONDERS to compare the artist on my
TV set to the photo in the book. Sure enough, it was the same guy, just 40+
years older. I had no idea that Rolf Harris was a portrait painter!
Unfortunately, the BBC's report did not mention Harris' 1963 novelty hit,
"Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport." Oh, well....

Strange. That song was just mentioned on a talk show radio station. Not
sure why, but it was :-)

Well, they do play some music during the weekend! :-)
Actually, they have an all request '60's, '70's and '80's show.
So, I tuned in one Saturday and they were playing an odd Jimmy Buffet
tune. It bored me. I tuned in the next Saurday, and they're playing the
same tune!!!
I can hear it now, their all request person....
Request: "Will you play this Strangelove's tune?"
DJ: "Sorry, ain't got that one."
Request: "Okay. Will you play this Easybeat's tune?"
DJ: "Sorry, ain't got that one."
Request: "Okay. Will you play this Commander Cody tune?"
DJ: "Sorry, ain't got that one."
Request: "Okay. Will you play this Five American's tune?"
DJ: "Sorry, ain't got that one."
Request: "Okay. What do you have?"
DJ: "Jimmy Buffet."
Request: "Okay. Play that!"

"Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" was a UK hit three years earlier than it
made it in the US---in 1960.
Harris is an accomplished painter and cartoonist and has regularly
demonstated his skill in these areas on UK TV for decades.As regards
Harris' status as a hit recording artist,this depends entirely on
which side of the pond you're looking from.
Over here he had many more hits than just the "Kangaroo" song---- his
other hits include "Sun Arise","Six White Boomers","Jake The Peg" (his
best novelty I think),a truly bizarre "Stairway To Heaven" (yes the
Led Zeppelin number!)----and the biggest of all which follows.....

The BBC would probably be more inclined to mention Harris'
biggest---and on these shores,most famous hit "Two Little Boys" which
went to #1 in 1969

I reckon that 'Two Little Boys' wasn't a hit in the USA then.

I saw him live on tv a lot in the 60s. Part of his show was often to paint
pictures relating to his songs as he sang. He's quite an accomplished
artist.

According to his web site, he's done a couple of art-oriented TV shows
for the BBC recently. So maybe at this point he's known more for that
than the old novelty songs.

The big deal on the news last night was that it was the first portait
of HM where she is smiling. From what I saw, it looked more like a

It was played in the Boston area, I remember hearing it but I never
knew the artist. I searched for it for years before I found the song
thanks to this group.
