Frank Sinatra takes "Five Minutes More" back to #1 on the Billboard
best saelling pop chart supplanting "To Each His Own" Ink Spots.New
is "Rumors Are Flying" Frankie Carle. New on the Race (r&b) chart is
"Playful Baby" Wynonie Harris and "To Each His Own" Ink Spots.

SEPTEMBER 28 1952

Ed Sullivan's "Toast Of The Town" TV Show pays homage to ASCAP this
night relating the story of the famous performing rights organization
and featuring cameos from Vaughn Monroe,Les Compagnons De La Chanson
& others. Shown in two parts (Part 2 next week)

SEPTEMBER 28 1953

Johnny Horton and Billie Jean Williams (Hank Williams widow) are
married this day

SEPTEMBER 29 1955

In Los Angeles,The Robins record "Smokey Joe's Cafe"/"Just Like A
Fool" for release on Spark 122 in October.Jerry Leiber and Mike
Stoller,who produce this session, will soon sell the Spark label to
Atlantic, after which the single is reissued on Atco 6059 (November).
Personnel : Carl Gardner (lead tenor vocal) ; Grady Chapman, Ty
Terrell (tenor vocals) ; Billy Richards Roy Richards (baritone vocals)
Bobby Nunn (bass vocals) ; Barney Kessel or Chuck Norris (guitar) ;
Gil Bernal (tenor sax) ; Mike Stoller (piano) ; Ralph Hamilton (bass)
;Jesse Sailes (drums). Later reissues of these songs on LP/CD are
usually credited to the Coasters.

Elsewhere the Cadillacs record "Speedo"/"Let Me Explain" in New York
City which is released on Josie 785 in the last week of October.The
Cadillacs are : Earl Carroll, Earl Wade, LaVerne Drake, Buddy Brooks
and Bobby Phillips.

SEPTEMBER 28 1957

Over two days Buddy Holly records at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma
City, under the supervision of Norman Petty. All four tracks will be
released on the Crickets' debut LP, "The Chirping Crickets" (Brunswick
BL 54038, November) : "Maybe Baby", "You've Got Love", "Rock Me
My Baby" and "An Empty Cup". "Maybe Baby" will also be released as a
single on February 12, 1958 (Brunswick 55053).Personnel : Buddy Holly
(vocals / lead guitar);Nikki Sullivan (rhythm guitar); Joe Mauldin
(bass) ;Jerry Allison (drums) ; The Picks (backing vocals, overdubbed
in October).

Thurston Harris' second session for Aladdin yields the track "Smokey
Joe's" (aka "I Got Loaded at Smokey Joe's Joint"), which will appear
on Aladdin 3428 in June 1958. Harris is vocally supported by The
Sharps who also record their own 45, "What Will I Gain"/"Shufflin'"
(Aladdin 3401, December).Personnel : Wilburn Whitfield (guitar) ; Plas
Johnson (tenor sax) ;Earl Palmer (drums). More details unknown.
Location : Master Recorders in Hollywood.

SEPTEMBER 28 1958

In a show featuring several famous baseball players (Mickey Mantle,
Yogi Berra etc) what little music there is on tonight's "Ed Sullivan
Show" comes mainly from Sacha Distel and Robert Maxwell (the harpist
of "Shangri-La" fame not the future newspaper magnate :)

Across on "The Steve Allen Show",Jimmie Rodgers sings "Are You Really
Mine?" and a variation of "The Mockingbird Song". Ray Anthony plays
"That Old Black Magic".Other guests are Joan Davis and Art Linkletter

New on the Billboard Hot Hundred are "Darling I Love You" Al Martino,
"Danny Boy" Conway Twitty,"I''ll Be Seeing You" Tommy Sands,"Living
Doll" Cliff Richard,"It Happened Today" Skyliners,"Boo Boo Stick Beat"
Chet Atkins,"Torquay" Fireballs,"First Love First Tears" Duane Eddy,
and "The Enchanted Sea" Islanders.On the R&B chart Lloyd Price returns
to #1 with "I'm Gonna Get Married" unseating Fats Domino and "I Want

Brenda Lee releases "Sweet Nothin's" her first major hit for Decca

Johnny Horton records a first version of "Ole Slew Foot", which will
remain unissued until the release of Bear Family box-set and, a little
later, the "Rockin' Rollin' Johnny Horton" CD on Bear Family 15543

(MGM 12969).Personnel includes Al Bruno and Grady Martin on guitars,
Floyd Cramer on piano,Jack Nance on drums, and Lightnin' Chance on
bass.

Meanwhile Ricky Nelson sings "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" on his parents
TV show as the new season of "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet"
begins.

Lattie Moore records "Here I Am Drunk Again"/"Driving Nails"
(King 5413, mid-October).

Chubby Checker sings and dances "The Twist" on "American Bandstand"

SEPTEMBER 28 1961

Don Gibson starts a two day session at the RCA Victor Studio in
Nashville. On the first day he records "I Sat Back And Let It Happen"
(first released on Bear Family BFX 15089, 1982), "I Know the Score"
(first released on Bear Family BFX 15097, 1982) and "The Same Old
Trouble" (RCA 7959, B-side of the new single, November).Personnel :

Howlin' Wolf records four tracks at the Chess studio in Chicago.
"Mama's Baby"/ "Do The Do" is released on Chess 1844 in December,
"Tail Dragger" on Chess 1890 in March 1964 and "Long Green Stuff"
stays in the can until 1979, when it appears as an LP track (Blues
Ball LP 2002). Backing by J.T. Brown (tenor sax) ; Johnny Jones
(piano) ; Hubert Sumlin (guitar) ;Jerome Arnold (bass) ; Junior
Blackman (drums).

SEPTEMBER 28 1963

The Beach Boys perform at the Surf Party at San Francisco's Cow
Palace.On the bill are Jan and Dean, Dee Dee Sharp, Freddy Cannon,
the Coasters, Ray Stevens, Bobby Freeman, the Ronettes. Nino Tempo
and April Stevens, Trini Lopez, the Jaynetts, Dionne Warwick,The
Righteous Brothers, Donna Loren and the Drifters.

The Ronettes also guest on "American Bandstand" singing "Be My

Phil Spector is charged with the murder of actress Lana Clarkson in an
unsealed indictment. Spector is in attendance at a Los Angeles court
as the indictment about the slaying of 40-year-old Clarkson was read.
His bail is set at $1 million
