The Cash Box Disk of the Week

PAT BOONE (Dot 15660)

“WHEN THE SWALLOWS COME BACK TO CAPISTRANO” (2:32) [Witmark ASCAP—Rene]
“APRIL LOVE” (2:39) [Leo Feist ASCAP—Fain, Webster]

Pat Boone, one of the most successful talents of recent years, continues on his merry way turning out one hit after the other. And now that he has his own TV show, we can expect to see an instantaneous and wider reaction to his new release. For his latest release, Pat couples something old with something new. The oldie is the delightful favorite “When The Swallows Come Back To Capistrano.” Pat sings this classic against a strong rock and roll beat backdrop and is assisted by a fine choral group. Could blossom into another “Love Letters.” The new material is
“April Love,” the title tune of Pat’s soon to be released 20th Century Fox flicker. Lovely romantic ballad with an inviting shuffle beat. Another top grade two-sider that’s chart-bound.

THE CASH BOX SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

THE SILVA-TONES (Argo 5281)

“THAT’S ALL I WANT FROM YOU” [Weiss & Barry BMI—Rothe]
“ROSES ARE BLOOMING” [Arc BMI]

“That’s All I Want From You”, a tune that songstress Jay P. Morgan sent riding high on the charts a few years ago, makes an exciting return to the record scene in a new form. This time around the song is treated in rock and roll fashion by the Silva-Tones on the Argo label and it looks as tho the song will enjoy another successful run. The disk has a terrific “chi-wah-wah” gimmick opening and features an exciting lead voice carrying the melody. Should be Argo’s biggest hit to date. The lower lid, “Roses Are Blooming”, is a guitar-filled swinger with a folk flavoring. Keep a close watch on the top side. It’s got hit ingredients.

“YOU SEND ME” (2:06) [Higuera BMI — Cooke]
A big new rock and roll ballad that’s starting to make noise in a number of territories, is hopped on by Dot with a fine rendition by Cornel Gunter. Strong delivery that should bite off a share of the sales melon.

both sides

“CALL ME A FOOL” (2:38) [House Of Fortune —Robinhood BMI—Motola, Marascalco]
The warm voiced vocalist chants another commercial fish-beat romancer that the kids should find to their liking.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JACKIE WALKER (Imperial 5473)

“PEGGY SUE” (2:36) [Nor-Va-Jak BMI—Allison, Petty]
Jackie Walker hands in an exciting rock and roll side that could break wide open. Socko swinger with a real wild foot-stompin’ backdrop. Torrid stuff to watch closely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVSZLMZTJTY

“WONDERFUL ONE” (1:58)[Travis BMI — Walker]
Walker slows up the pace on this end as hechants a warm and melodic fish-beat ballad. Kids should find both halves appealing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VARETTA DILLARD (RCA Victor 7057)

“THAT’S WHY I CRY” (2:34) [Chico’s BMI—de Jesus, de Jesus]
Varetta Dillard belts from the heels as she wails an exciting blues rocker that moves. Potent rhythm item that could also make noise in the R &B field.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtTKD_tUpx8

“UNDECIDED” (2:24) [Leeds ASCAP — Robin, Shavers]
The lark fashions a top drawer standard in today’s idiom. Good jumper.

The Cash Box Award o’ the Week

DALE HAWKINS (Checker 876)

“BABY, BABY” (2:37) [Ridgeway/Arc BMI—Glasser]
“MRS. MERGUITORY’S DAUGHTER” (2:29) [Arc BMI—Hawkins, Adams, Lewis]

Dale Hawkins follows his “Suzie Q” with another quick beat novelty jumper, “Baby, Baby”. His swinging and hard hitting style is tailor made for the material presented here. Arrangement and instrumental sound back Hawkins with maximum effect. This one looks like a sure shot follow- up to his “Suzie Q”. The flip, “Mrs. Merguitory’s Daughter”, is another quick beat jumper with a cute lyric. Ok deck, but not the big side. Look out for “Baby, Baby”.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHUCK BERRY (Chess 1671)

"ROCK & ROLL MUSIC” (2:35) [Arc BMI—C. Berry]
“BLUE FEELING” (2:39) [Arc BMI—C. Berry]

Chuck Berry off to another big seller with his stirring reading of the middle beat jump, “Rock & Roll Music”. Berry handles the lyric with an impressive presentation, simple but strong, and the kids should slip right into the
backbeat groove with this etching. Instrumental support lends more excitement to Berry’s reading and it’s a solid bet for the charts. The reverse end, “Blue Feeling”, is a slow beat mood blues instrumental. Rambling piano and strings paint the “blue” air with moving intensity. Ok coupler, but for runaway action, look to “Rock & Roll Music”.

real sized hit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqvl9gIO_Vw

“HONEY BEE” (2:20) [Angel Seibon BMI—B. Myles]
Myles rocks on the flip with a rock-a-billy hunk of material so commercial on the current market. Good coupler that has lots of pleasure cut into the grooves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bi6KEIzRkv0

“LOVE, SWEET LOVE” (1:57) [Murray Nash BMI — Riley, Woodfold]
Miss Smith lends this middle beat jumper the same treatment. Sort of an up-to-date Betty Boop. Swingy ork assist.

THE ANSWERS (United 212)

“KEEPS ME WORRIED ALL THE TIME” (2:42) [Pamlee BMI—Miller, Smith]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPNLwFBqWy0

“HAVE NO FEAR” (2:26) [Pamlee BMI—Miller, Smith]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE TEEN QUEENS (RPM 500)

The Teen Queens blend sweetly on a slow beat pop-styled styled pretty. The Queens offer a tuneful wax that grows stronger with each spin. A warm, haunting quality embodied in the treatment makes this a deck to be watched. It has the qualities, both material and treatment, that make it look like a potent threat.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XOnFSdGODg

“TWO LOVES & TWO LIVES” (2:23) [Harrison ASCAP—B. Russell]
The Teen Queens offer an- other slick wax in the “Patti Page” vein. It’s a melodic ballad, light, drifty and sentimental. Another contender.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8Om0J4e1Mg

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PEE WEE CRAYTON (Vee-Joy 252) (with the El Dorados)

“I DON’T CARE” (2:55) [Conrad BMI—Crayton, Bradford]

Pee Wee Crayton offers a slow beat shuffle with a routine riff and gives it an ok reading. Swingy ditty.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7vA2k3YiCQ

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WILLIS SANDERS and The Embers (Juno 213)

“YOUR SOUVENIR” (2:13) [Adams BMI — Francis]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PORTUGUESE JOE (Surf 5016)

“MISS PING PONG” (1:55) DT [Robin Hood BMI—Marasealco]

The Cash Box R&B Sleeper of the Week

THE "5" ROYALES (King 5082)

“SAY IT” (2:18) [Armo BMI—Lowman Pauling]
“MESSIN’ UP” (2:38) [Armo BMI—Lowman Pauling]

The “5” Royales, who bounced back into the limelight with “Think”, now bid fair to stick in the upper ozone with a slow, syncopated bouncer, “Say It”. The lads team with sparkling efficiency as they dish up the infectious item. Arrangement and some crazy guitar sounds help no end. The flip, “Messin’ Up”, is a quick beat jump, rocked out by the Royales with a zesty performance. Good teener-bait and a side that strengthens the release — but we look to “Say It” for the money.

both sides - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eILIS9nSL30

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE EL DORADOS (Vee-Jay 250)

“TEARS ON MY PILLOW” (2:18) [Tollie BMI—Moses, Moore]
“A ROSE FOR MY DARLING” (2:45) [Tollie BMI—P. Moses]

The El Dorados are back in the picture with a swingy little middle beat titled, “Tears On My Pillow”. The group treats the appealing item with a combination of sentimentality and bounce. It turns out to be an extremely effective waxing and the sales should reflect this shortly. Flip deck, “A Rose For My Darling”, is a beautiful, tender slow beat ballad. It’s a story of young love set to an old-fashioned air. Pretty wax—but we like “Tears On My Pillow” for the long run.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gene and Wendell chant a quick beat Latin flavored happy. An infectious ditty with a cute stacatto treatment.

“LULA BABY” (2:07) [Venice BMI—E. Washington]
Gene and Wendell again offer a Latin colored bouncer with a middle beat. Light hearted waxing that lifts the spirits.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TWILIGHTERS (Ebb 117)

“LIVE LIKE A KING” (2:17) [Ebb BMI—Williams, Wright]
The Twilighters rock out a quick beat jump with a wild treatment that should stir up the teeners. Good “youngster” etching.

both sides - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-U-u96FXBY

“PRIDE AND JOY” (1:57) [Ebb BMI— Williams, Wright]
The Twilighters turn tender on the flip, turning out a slow, rhythmic ballad with an ok reading.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TONY ALLEN (Ebb 115)

“COME BACK” (2:02) [Ebb 'BMI—T. Allen]
Tony Allen does a smooth, workmanly job on a slow, rhythmic ballad. Allen swings lightly and very effectively as his mellow voice tells the story. Strong wax.

“WHY IN THE WORLD” (2:12) [Ebb BMI — T. Allen]
Allen lashes out with bewildered anger as he asks “Why in the world did you you leave me?” A strong, intensive wax with some solid vocal fireworks from Allen and a solid ork backing. Two good decks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa9ODpaGqgw

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE MADDOX BROS. & ROSE (Columbia 41020)

“STOP WHISTLIN’ WOLF" (2:26) [Alamo ASCAP—Twomey, F. Wise, E. Thomas]
Rose Maddox turns in a dandy vocal job as the brothers back her up in sensational instrumental fashion on this contagious, fast moving novelty item. Strong side for the boxes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WunOZZHzVd0

“LET ME LOVE YOU” (2:01) [Central Songs BMI — T. Collins]
This end the group asks the gal to make up her mind as they light-heartedly romp over a quick moving romantic ditty. A double-barreled coin-catcher.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21m4rvgPQQI

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOBBY LORD (Columbia 41030)

“AM I A FOOL” (1:54) [Acuff-Rose BMI—B. Lord, M. Lord]
“I KNOW IT WAS YOU” (2:23) [Cedarwood BMI—W. Walker, G. Sherry]

Bobby Lord, who has been coming closer to the much sought after national smash with each release, seems to have hit on the right formula with his latest Columbia pressing. And the tune that’s most likely to turn the trick is
tagged “Am I A Fool”. It’s a rhythmic, up tempo romantic-blues that the chanter projects with telling effect. Flip portion, labeled “I Know It Was You”, a lovely middle beat shuffler, is another potent entry that Lord sells with
authority. Excellent pop flavored vocal and musical assist on this twin-threat.
