Staying away from live stuff unless the later live version became the hit, like Frampton or "Maybe I'm Amazed."

Whoa, the later version is not better. It's just a possibility to make the list.

The first 2 are definites. No way on the Crockett or the Smiley, total non hits. On the Cochran is the good version from the movie the remake, or is it the movie one the first version followed by the USA shitty 45 version?

If the shit one just has dubbed in stuff and is not an actual different recording than it doesn't qualify.

Ok, that makes more sense now, but I misinterpreted the purpose of the list.

Question, if memory serves, I think his original BSS showed up in the
move via a jukebox scene.

So this 1960 version, I don't think it was in the movie. But I'm
guessing it is on the GI Blues album ?

If the recording is the same, but the production around it is revamped, that seems to fall under a different category.

Yes, the GI Blues version was the one in the movie. The original 1956 version was not in any movie, but I think some people have used the 1956 audio and dubbed it in over the movie scene.

On "Twenty Flight Rock" the original version was recorded in July 1956
and is the version used in "The Girl Can't Help It" movie and released
in the UK as a London label single

The US Liberty single version was recorded in mid-1957

Right, so the one that would have to be on the list is the US single, which is shit. The list is for the greatest Remakes of an Artist's own song. If it was the other way around on "20FR where the good version was the remake, then I would put the good version of "Twenty Flight Rock" on the list.

There's "Desiree" (the 1960s version) by the Charts, which is popular
among Northern Soul people, but I think it sucks.

"Don't Ask Me To Be Lonely" by the Dubs is not a remake. That is an
error. It's the same version on both labels. If I'm wrong, prove
it--come up with the first version and show me where it's different.

Elmore James and Sonny Boy Williamson both recorded remakes when they
changed labels. In EJ's case I uniformly prefer the originals, but in
SBW's case, some of the remakes might be better.

The earlier version was just a demo that got released on an album many months after the first released version. Most hit songs have earlier versions that were done before they got it right. The only difference here is the earlier "Come Go With Me" eventually got released in the same era because another label thought they could confuse record buyers and make some money.

Here's an earlier version of another classic.

This was Roger's suggestion, I don't see the earlier version on Youtube. Let's see if he can put it there.

There's a giveaway copy that was pressed on the KDEO label (radio) but I think it's the same recording as the hit, which means I'll have to remove it from the list. Let's see what Roger says.

I think it's important to explain that you're only using live versions
when they were bona fide hits on their own. Otherwise people will claim
you missed a million "very important" live versions.

Hopefully the above different take version will show up, but I don't
think the linked version should  qualify if it's the same as the
original with just some parts edited out, if this commenter is correct :

This is the mix released in Britain in January,1961. This  is the
version John Lennon listened to in Liverpool, UK! This mix is missing
the two chord introduction and the Tenor Saxophone solo is extremely
edited.

I think the UK release of "Angel Baby" is an alternate take that
Highland sent to Decca in London by mistake.

I can't see such a tiny recording outfit going to all the time and
expense of making an edited version just for overseas consumption.

And on this side of the pond I know from expperience that Decca were
loath to "edit" recordings sent to them from foreign licensors (though
they did perform such a job on an offending Carl Perkins record)

Explain what you're thinking because I don't see any earlier version before the hit, and I don't see any significant live or later remake. They did record it 3 times before settling on which one to release, but that don't mean anything, there's loads of records like that where earlier recordings were dismissed as not what they want to release.

Steve Mc

Well, if memory serves, though that probably doesn't work as well these
day as it used to, this original version was played to death here in
California,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MywlBwkUSCM

And then then this live version which came out later, as far as I could
tell, was also played a lot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56l7mHqK59o

That  was my thinking.

You may have heard the live version a lot out there, but it has no objective merits. Never charted, not acclaimed, nothing to justify a listing.

That's fine. I'm not gonna lose my nap over it. Never was much of a fan

They all "qualify" to be considered, but most have no objective credentials. Same with an remake by any artist.

The label wanted to edit it down for the single release, but the band refused that.

Even if you were right, the record did not chart over there, so it has no objective credentials. Besides, I don't consider an alternate version from the same session to be a "remake."

From Wiki:

The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1960 and remained on the charts for 13 weeks, reaching No. 5 on January 28, 1961.[3] On the R&B charts, "Angel Baby" also peaked at #5 and remained on that chart for eight weeks.[4] In 1961, "Angel Baby" was also released in Canada (#6) on the Zirkon label and in Australia and England on London Records. The British release slightly edited the intro.

I know there was more edited than the intro, but I don't hear it as an alternate.

More from Wiki:

"Angel Baby" was a 1960 single by Rosie and the Originals. The group recorded the song independently on a two-track machine, located in a facility in the small farming community of San Marcos, California. At the time, lead singer Rosie Hamlin was only 15 years old. She had written the lyrics for "Angel Baby" as a poem for "[her] very first boyfriend" when she was a 14-year-old student at Mission Bay High School in San Diego, California.[2]

Initially unable to find a label willing to distribute the song because of its unpolished sound, the group convinced a San Diego department store to pipe their master through the listening booths in the record department. The response from listeners prompted Highland Records to sign the band and promote the single. Since its release the song has become an oldies standard.

===================================================================================

Since they did not actually record it for Highland, I don't see how there could possibly have been an alternate anywhere for someone to send to the UK, intentionally or not.

It was his "That's Right" which was released here with a whole verse
edited out due to its inclusion of the word "booger"

Too close for comfort with the English term "bugger" which was a
verboten swear word back in the 50's and is still frowned on today.

As to its meaning - think "sodomy" .

Bruce

Had to remove "Heart Of Glass" from the list, the early version was not released until like the 1990s or later. Also added "Valerie (Remix)" by Steve Winwood. It started as just a remix, but Winwood liked the idea so much that he recorded a new vocal to fit better with the style of the remix.

Here is where we are at now.

On reflection and considering both arguments I'm thinking you are
probably right.I had heard the "recorded on a beat up machine" story
before but still find it hard to imagine Decca here spending time and
money editing a tape by some unknown US act (even if they were
currently climbing the charts over there)

I giuess we'll never know the full story

P.S Did you check your mail junk file re Kitty Kaye?

It got missed because it has no objective credentials and won't make the list. It's just something that some of you here think is great just as I think that "Boppin' The Blues" by Carl Perkins and the NRBQ is better than the Sun version, but these will not be on the list.

Whatever you sent it hasn't gotten here. Try sending it to Diane.

Has anyone mentioned Inez & Charlie Foxx's 1968 remake of "Mockingbird?" If anything, I like it better than the original.

Wasn't aware of it. Didn't chart or anything so it wouldn't make the list.

Don't see it on Youtube, but came across this:
