Surprise, number one--meaning I voted for the loser. The Clovers
version of Liggins big hit is all right, but it's always been a number
better in its instumental parts than the lyrics. "Sometime," seems to
me a first-rate song, well-sung by Thomas.

Biggest surprise of the round for me. Wanda's fine, but this is RC near
his Atlantic peak.
if Roger had voted for The Edsels then Shake Shake Sherry would have
won 15-13! :-)
Yep, that occurred to me the moment I hit the send button. Still, for a
good CB song to go out in a prelim, is irritating, especially losing
to a second-rate doowop rave-up.

Ordinary Charles song squeeked by killer Milton song only because some
people just voted for the bigger name artist. "So Mean To Me" is
awesome.
Both of these seem like good, but rather ordinary blues records to me.
Hardly killer stuff. You jump on the vocal group fans for voting genre
rather than individual quality, but you seem inclined to do the same
thing for blues.
That "ordinary" RC record strikes me as one of the few ABC sides that
would fit right in with his best Atlantic work.
No, both of those records have been high on my lists forever.

> 30 Hit The Road Jack Ray Charles
You really think "Hit the Road Jack" is a better record than "The
Danger Zone" or, more importantly, "Hard Times," which Roger and I both
think is Ray's best of the year?
I certainly do, and so does most of the world, and I guarantee "Hit
The Road Jack" will do much better in this contest than those other
mediocrities.
-----------------
I'm very fond of "The Danger Zone," myself. You don't pay attention to
lyrics, but if you did the song might have started running through your
head, as it did through mine, during the past 8 years or so.
DianeE
Thanks, Diane. I would have mentioned the lyrics, too, but didn't want
to end up in that same old same-old with Bruce. Mayfield had a knack of
mixing the deeply personal with the "uproar" of the world in a way
that, like all good writing, takes on new meanings as times change.
More than ever, alas, the danger zone is everywhere.
For those who haven't listened closely, here's the whole lyric (grabbed
from a website and not checked by me):
Sad and lonely all the time
That's because I've got a worried mind
You know the world is in an uproar
The danger zone is everywhere, everywhere
Just read your paper
And you'll see
Just exactly what keeps worryin' me
Yeah, you'll see the world is in an uproar
The danger zone is everywhere
My love for the world is like always
For the world is a part of me
That's why I'm so afraid
Of the progress that's being made
Toward eternity
Every morning, noon, and night
Finds me hoping that everything's alright
Mm-hmm, the world is in an uproar
The danger zone is everywhere
Mayfield wrote "Hit The Road Jack."
Probably the biggest payday of his life.

Nothing else he wrote can possibly come close to "Hit The Road Jack"
(a monster worldwide hit) in sales terms. It must dwarf even "Please

But, of course, that in itself doesn't mean it's his best song.
It's his best song by any measure that we can quantify.
popularity
critical acclaim
It's # 9 for the year according to the critics, and it's the only Ray
Charles song that is listed in 1961.
http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/
It's # 873 of all time according to the critics. "Please Send Me" is #
2214 of all time according to the critcs, so "Hit The Road" is clearly
Mayfield's most acclaimed composition and also his biggest selling
composition. The rest of the debate is just based on the personal
taste of 2 or 3 people.
I didn't say it did. I am merely confirming my agreement with Bruce
inasmuch that IMO it definitely stands as easily Mayfield's most
successful song in terms of the #1 way that the music industry
measures success i.e profit
.
Personally I think 1961 was a huge year for Ray with a whole slew of
terrific singles of which "Hit The Road Jack" is definitely one but it
isn't my FAVORITE one by him that year. That honor goes to "Hard
Times" as I've said but that doesn't mean that I think "Hit The Road
Jack" is anything less than great.
Bruce>
-----------------------------
Bruce,
I only saw your top 30 hits, not your top 100.
I have good news and bad news about them.
The good news--I am only familiar with 17 of the songs you listed. That
should make your day since a "real" music fan would know them all,
according to you.
The bad news is that of the ones I know, I agree with your selections,
if not the top "30" then certainly terrific songs I've enjoyed.
One question-- I noticed you have "Pony Time" as #6.
Am curious to know why you rate this particular tune so highly? To me,
it's just more CC fluff of even another "dance" tune.
What makes you like it so much?
I am NOT questioning where you put it as all selections and rankings are
subjective, but "Pony Time" is the kind of song I'd never miss if I
never heard it again.
I do not criticize anyone's lists, be they yours, Roger's, Dean's or
anyone else who has posted theirs.
Just am genuinely curious why you rate it so highly?
Frank
"Fluff" does not describe anything that Chubby Checker did. "Fluff" is
what many of the people that you like (such as Eddie Fisher) did.
Before you ask again, there is no way for me to convey to you WHY I
like any record. I just hear it and it either grabs me, or is doesn't.
"Pony Time" just kills me every time I hear it. One of the greatest
party records ever. Incredibly exciting from the moment it starts
right to the end.
Since I'm probably the biggest RC fan left here, now that Bob Roman has
departed, I agree with you, of course, that "HTRJ" is terrific. My
comment was directed at Bruce, not you.
I think you have it ranked too high, but I also think Checker is worthy
of respect, and that "Pony Time" may be his best.
You can't possibly have a valid opinion as to whether or not I SHOULD
like a record more or less than I do. If anything it's ranked too low
based on how I feel every time I hear it.
Frank
Frank, you can like whatever shit that you want to like. You'd upset
the order of things if you ever became hip.
"50s" <Sav...@aol.com> wrote in message
news:1f978cf6-67d2-4576...@r19g2000yqb.googlegroups.com...
hip adj. San Franciscan/South Beach speak for "goes both ways".
Consistency? Methinks not.
BTW, if you've decided that what you are is "hip", thanks for excluding
me.
Over and out.
Are you really this stupid?
You or Mark or anybody else is perfectly entitled to tell me that you
think that something that I like is shit.....which is what I do when I
mock the taste of other people. I don't tell you what you SHOULD like,
I tell you that much of what you DO like is complete utter dogshit.
What I don't do, and what Mark did, was to try and tell me that on a
list of my own personal favorites that he thinks that I had something
(Pony Time) rated too highly.
That would be like if you told me that your favorite variety of ice
cream was chocolate, and I came back and told you that you have
chocolate rated to highly. It's YOUR favorite, I can't tell you what
you SHOULD like, I can only tell my own opinion of what you DO like
(chocolate is excellent).
Mark can tell me that HE doesn't like "Pony Time" near as much as I
do, but he can't tell me that I have it overrated on a list of
personal favorites.
Now, if the list is something like this one:
http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/bg_hits/bg_hits_61.html
With a listed criteria....
Criteria: - These records were chosen and ranked based on their
initial and lasting popularity, and on their impact on the overall
scope of musical history. Records are listed based on the year that
they were released.
Then Mark would be perfectly entitled to tell me if he thinks that I
have something overrated on the list.
37 Pony Time Chubby Checker
And based on the above criteria, I listed "Pony Time" much lower than
it ranked on the list of my personal favorites from the same year.
Can you grasp this?
> What I don't do, and what Mark did, was to try and tell me that on a

I said I THINK you have "Pony Time" rated too highly, clearly
indicating (I thought) a statement of my own opinion.
...you said that "I" had it rated too highly.
You stated an opinion about my assessment of the record, rather than
an opinion about "your" assessment of the record.
Oops, I just had a senior moment. I forgot the 856 times you've done
that here.
If you type a list of your favorites, you are inviting comment on it,
whether pro or con. Imagine the hubris Mark showed by disagreeing with
where you placed "Pony Time".
Shame on you Mark ;-).
Frank
I guess you didn't grasp it.
Show me one time where I told somebody that they should raise or drop
an item on a list of their own favorites.
If I tell somebody that a record that they like blows, I am stating my
opinion of the record. Nothing wrong with that.
Have I ever told you that you should like Little Richard more than you
do, or that you should not like Eddie Fisher as much as you do?
Maybe but I nominated both Buster Brown and Jimmy McCracklin songs
this time around. They aren't exactly obscure artists.
No, but you tend to like strange songs by artists like that, things
that most people have never heard of.

More like TOTALLY obscure.

In as many words, yes. You continually over rate Tiny Dick and dis one of
the greatest male voices of all time, that being Eddie Fisher.

However, Fisher deserves some respect as he was one of the hottest
singers in the early '50s, if not THE hottest, had a wonderful voice and
was perhaps the biggest teen idol since Sinatra and until Elvis.
What is your opinion of those here who voted "Mona Lisa" as their
favorite song of 1950? You were not a happy camper, were you? You
questioned the taste of those who voted for it as song of the year.
Frank
My opinion is that their like for that song is just their whiteness
coming out. When it comes down to it, they prefer black guys who don't
sound too black. Harry Reid was right.
I don't think it's fair to say the voters prefer blacks who don't sound
too black. They just liked "Mona Lisa" better than any other song for
that year. I highly doubt if "Uncle Tom" (your reference to him) Nat
"King Cole" was voted for because of the reasons you cite.
Look at the results of other yearly contests.
Oh no, he DEFINITELY has to apologize, if not more.
Just like Jackson with the Himey-Town comment. He was right, he was
coming to a town full of jews, but people don't want to hear these
things expressed.
In 1825 the second Jewish synagogue was erected in New York. It was
called B'nai Jeshuron and it became the forerunner of all the Ashkenazi
"shuls" and "temples" and "synagogues" now serving the 972,000 Jews in
the city. That is right. Only 972,000. For the first time in 50 years
the Jewish population of New York City has dropped to less than one
million. In fact, 50 years ago New York had 2 million Jews, who
constituted one fourth of the New York population. Now, when New York
City has 8 million people, THE JEWS ARE ONLY 12 PERCENT (my CAPS for
emphasis) The reason is both migration and the falling Jewish birth
rate. There are in fact 1.4 million Jews in Greater New York, meaning
the suburbs.
------------------
Jackson was wrong both factually and was linguistically .
"Hymie" is a derogatory word for Jewish people, and you know it.
Here's how it evolved;
Rev. Jesse Jackson referred to Jews as "Hymies" and to New York City as
"Hymietown" in January 1984 during a conversation with a black
Washington Post reporter, Milton Coleman. Jackson had assumed the
references would not be printed because of his racial bond with Coleman,
but several weeks later Coleman permitted the slurs to be included far
down in an article by another Post reporter on Jackson's rocky relations
with American Jews.
A storm of protest erupted, and Jackson at first denied the remarks,
then accused Jews of conspiring to defeat him. The Nation of Islam's
radical leader Louis Farrakhan, an aggressive anti-Semite and old
Jackson ally, made a difficult situation worse by threatening Coleman in
a radio broadcast and issuing a public warning to Jews, made in
Jackson's presence: "If you harm this brother [Jackson], it will be the
last one you harm."
If Reid said Obama helped himself get elected by being a light skinned
nigger, then your comparison would be apt.
As it stands, it's not.
I guess but their better known songs are already in the contest.
Which is the largest number of Jews BY FAR of any Metropolitan area of
the United States....hence, the "Himey town" remark.

And it is also derogitory for someone to infer that whites have a
problem with someone who speaks in a "Negro dialect." Not only is the
use of the word "Negro" a problem there, as it infers that a "Negro"
speaks differently than a black, but it's also derogatory for someone
to infer that there is sometrhing wrong with the way that people of a
certain race speak......as if they don't speak as well as the white
race.

No, I don't think so. "Nigger" is a much worse word than "Himey."
"Nigger" would be similar maybe to "Kike."
"Himey" would maybe be similar to "shfatzah." It's an insult, but not
as big an insult as "nigger."
Both men needed to apologize, and both did.
In fact, Reid's remarks were MUCH WORSE in my opinion, as he actually
expressed a belief that "negroes" who sound a certain way are inferior
to "blacks" who sound closer to how he thinks that "whites" sound.
Saying that he is going to "Himey Town" is like your parents telling
you when you were a kid that you shouldn't go to parts of town that
were "shfatzah neighborhoods."
Which is worse... calling an Italian-American a Guinea or a Wop? It
doesn't matter. They are both used in the same negative context.
Which is the largest number of Jews BY FAR of any Metropolitan area of

-------------------------
Since Jews only make up 12% of NYC residents how can you say "hence, the
'himey town' remark?
Why didn't he refer to NYC as "goyim town" since approximately 85% of
their residents are that?
It's like referring to the NBA as a honky league as the proportion of
whites is about the same as Jews who live in NYC.
I'm not debating which person made the better apology, I'm only
disputing your contention that Reid should not have apologized.
> He was more pissed off at a brother for "betraying" him.
As he should be.

Guinea and Wop are fairly even, yes, but kike is worse than himey,
just like nigger is worse than darky.
There are hundreds of songs where blacks are referred to as "darkies,"
but not near as many where they are referred to as "niggers."
Because there are many towns that are much higer than 85% non-Jewish.
The new York area is the ONLY place in America with over a million
Jews. Nothing else is even remotely close.
> It's like referring to the NBA as a honky league as the proportion of

Not even close. There are way more than 12% non blacks in the NBA
these days. It's more like 27% now. But I wouldn't expect you to know
that as you are a typical white guy who thinks that it's an all black
league.
That's a poor analogy, Frank. There is only one place in America with
over a million Jews. There are millions of associations in America
that have more than 100 white people involved (NBA Players).
Speaking of the NBA, where was the outcry amongst the black players re
Donald Sterling's plea of "no contest" when he was sued for
discriminating against blacks when not renting to them in the 100+
buildings he owned in the greater L.A. area?
How come none of them said they'd ever play for such an owner?
Why haven't the Revs Jackson and Sharpton demanded a meeting with David
Stern about this?
Why is he still the owner of the L.A. Clippers?
