THE CASH BOX SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

THE ROVER BOYS (ABC-Paramount 9700; 45-9700)

"GRADUATION DAY” (2:38) [Sheldon BMI—Sherman, Sherman]
“I HEAR MUSIC” (2:08) [George George BMI—Scott]

In a few weeks, millions of students will be graduating from high schools and colleges all across the country. And by that time, one of the top songs in the nation should be “Graduation Day” by the Rover Boys. It’s a wonderfully nostalgic ballad which the group executes with great feeling and understanding. A touching piece of material that will mean a great deal to the youngsters and recall some of the most pleasant years to adults. Looks like an all out smash. For variety, the coupling offers a zestful dance item called “I Hear Music”. A swinging cutie with a solid beat. The boys really belt. Strong coupling. “Come To Me” established the crew in many territories. “Graduation Day” should skyrocket them to stardom.

THE FOUR LOVERS (RCA Victor 20/47-6519)

“PLEASE DON’T LEAVE ME” [Commodore BMI—Domino]
“HONEY LOVE” [Progressive BMI—McPhatter, Wexler]

A sensational rock and roll quartet called the Four Lovers makes a tremendous debut on Victor with four sides which the -company is releasing simultaneously. Two sides are absolute standouts and should rack up a fabulous sale when the chips are tallied. The highlight side of one platter is “The Girl In My Dreams”. It’s a potent interpretation of a solid fish-beat ballad that has the dollar sign stamped in every groove. Side is loaded with all of
the gimmicks that the teenagers love. Looks like a hot one. Flip “You’re The Apple Of My Eye” is a hard hitting latin beat rocker that should keep the feet moving. Catchy delivery. The hot side of the other disk is “Please Don’t Leave Me”. A power packed jolter that had the rhythm and blues boxes jumping a while back. It’s a real swinger that the kids will go wild about. The coupling on this disk is a vivid revival of one of the biggest of all r & b hits, “Honey Love”. The group has a striking sound and sells each one of the tunes. Watch both records. They should break wide open.

“CAN’T STAND TO SEE YOU GO” (2:48) [Conrad BMI—Reed]
“ROCKIN’ WITH REED” (2:29) [Conrad BMI—Reed]

Jimmy Reed makes his newest another with “hit” woven into the grooves. The down home singer wails a slow beat, melodic blues, “Can’t Stand To See You Go”, with that styling that has proved so powerful in the past. He sings
with a warmth and feeling that aims the lyrics right at you. This deck should follow in the footsteps of “Ain’t That Lovin’ You Baby”. The flip, “Rockin’ With Reed”, is a quick beat wax instrumental.

THE FLAIRS (ABC-Paramount 9698)

“IN SELF DEFENSE” (2:58) [Peer Int’l. NMI—Thomas]

The Flairs make their debut on the ABC-Paramount label with two very strong decks. The jump side, “She Loves To Rock”, is a quick beat swinging etching with that exciting beat, stirring vocal and the necessary gimmick. It’s good, it’s infectious, it’s crazy. The flip, “In Self Defense”, is a change of pace. The Flairs go sweet and mellow, singing a slow, rhythmic ballad with a delicate, easy swaying chant. It is a beautiful side and the reading should put it into the hit category. Both sides are chart threats and neither should be overlooked in favor of the other.

“YOU DON’T KNOW ME” (2:34) [Hill & Range BMI—C. Walker, E. Arnold]

If a top quality vocal is your listening pleasure then Eddy Arnold is the man to see (and hear). The chanter is a sure bet to grab off two more places on the charts, once again, with both ends of his latest release. On one end,
“The Rockin’ Mockin’ Bird”, Arnold takes hold of a wonderful old-timer and wraps it up in a delightful, rhythmic, modern-day fashion. It’s a contagious, gimmicked-up per- formance that makes for a musical treat. On the other
side, the vocalist is superbly backed by Charles Grean’s ork and chorus as he beautifully delivers a tearful, middle beat, lover’s ballad tagged “You Don’t Know Me”. An excellent coupling for the pop-country market.
