Marty Robbins signs a long term recording deal with Columbia

MAY 25 1954

At Chess Studios in Chicago Howlin' Wolf records "Evil Is Going On"
with Otis Spann on piano, Jody Williams and Hubert Sumlin on guitars
and Willie Dixon on bass. .

Country singer Doug Poindexter & The Starlite Wranglers have a
historic recording session at Sun Records 706 Union Ave Memphis
Tennessee this day. The unspectacular "Now She Cares No More"
is flipped with "My Kind Of Carrying On" as Sun 202 released in June.
Why is this session historic you ask? Because it marks the debut on
record of two soon-to-be-very-famous members of the Starlite
Wranglers! Personnel : Doug Poindexter (vcl/gtr) Scotty Moore

MAY 25 1955

In Nashville Faron Young records "Go Back, You Fool" and "All
Right". Both tracks will be used for his next single (Capitol 3169).

MAY 25 1956

The first of only two 1956 sessions by Fats Domino yields three
tracks. "When My Dreamboat Comes Home" is chosen for the next
single (Imperial 5396, July). "Ida Jane" is first released on the LP
"Let's Play Fats Domino" (Imperial LP 9065, September 1959) and
will be issued as a single (Imperial 5816) in February 1962. "Don't
Know What's Wrong" stays on the shelf until 1970, when it is
included on the LP "Rare Dominoes, Vol. 2" (United Artists UAS
29152, UK).Personnel : Fats Domino (vocal, piano) ; Ernest McLean,

on "The Perry Como Show" on NBC-TV

In the British charts Andy Williams clinches the #1 spot this day with
his version of "Butterfly" dethroning Guy Mitchell's "Rock-A-Billy"

MAY 25 1958

Buddy Holly & The Crickets pay another visit to Norman Petty's studio
in Clovis, New Mexico. "It's So Easy"/"Lonesome Tears" is released
on September 12 on Brunswick 55094. Probably also from this session
comes "Heartbeat", which will appear on Coral 62051 on November 5.

(lead guitar) ;Joe B. Mauldin (string bass) ; Jerry Allison (drums).

Peggy Lee records "You Don't Know" which becomes the flipside of
her million selling version of Little Willie John's "Fever" (Capitol
3998, June),.Arranged and conducted by Jack Marshall. Location :
Capitol Tower, Hollywood.

During his third and last session for Challenge,Huelyn Duvall cuts
"Three Months To Kill"/"Little Boy Blue" (Challenge 59014, June) and
"Juliet"(Challenge 59025, September, c/w "Friday Night On A Dollar
Bill" from an earlier session). Location : Bradley Studio, Nashville.
Backing by : Hank Garland (lead guitar) ; Grady Martin (rhythm guitar)

possibly Danny Wolfe (piano) ; Unknown (bass) ; Buddy Harman (drums).

Frankie Lymon guests on "The Ed Sullivan Show"

On "The Steve Allen Show" Louis Armstrong performs "Mack the Knife",
"I'm Confessing (That I Love You)", and reads the poem "A Red Red
Rose.".The show also features Peter Ustinov,Van Cliburn and Barbara
McNair (singing "Too Late The Spring.").

Two-day session for Jerry Lee Lewis at the Sun Studio in Memphis.
"Let's Talk About Us"/"The Ballad Of Billy Joe" becomes the new
single (Sun 324), released on June 15. "Home" (written by Roger
Miller) will find a place on Jerry's second LP in 1962. The other
tracks (Night Train To Memphis, I'm the Guilty One, Sail Away, Am I
To Be The One - the latter two duets with Charlie Rich) were not
released until Shelby Singleton had bought the Sun catalogue.

Lloyd Price records his next single, "I'm Gonna Get Married"/"Three

3). A third track, "That's Love", remains in the vaults until it is
included on the LP "Lloyd Price Greatest Hits" in 1982, on the Curb
label.Personnel includes : Bill Jones (guitar) ; Ted Curson (trumpet)
more details unknown.Produced by Don Costa at Bell Sound Studios
in New York City.

Marty Robbins has his last recording session with Mitch Miller at
Columbia Studios in NYC. Recorded are another take of "Cap And
Gown" (the released version was recorded May 7th) plus "She Was
Young And She Was Pretty" and "Love Can't Wait". These three
NYC recordings stayed in the can until the release of the Bear Family
CD "Ruby Ann" (BCD 15569) in 1991.

In London,Cliff Richard records "Apron Strings",which will be released
as the B-side of "Living Doll" on 10 July, 1959 (Columbia DB 4306).
Producer : Norrie Paramor. Allegedly, Cliff was offered the song by
Freddy Bienstock, after Elvis had turned it down in Germany.

better version of one of his own songs ABC-Paramount this day
release Tommy Roe's improved version of his own "Sheila"----the

zoom straight to #1
