Safety Fifth
Mucca Pazza
Electric Cowbell Records
c/o Rock Paper Scissors
511 West 4th Street, Suite 2
Bloomington, IN 47404
$10.97 www.rockpaperscissors.biz

The Chicago band Mucca Pazza likes to take on the appearance of a
marching band, but their music surges with the unstoppable rhythms of
rock-'n'-roll. Their latest album, Safety Fifth, lives up to its devil-
may-care title by drawing upon a grand medley of eccentric yet
enthusiastic influences, from homages to pop culture television, to
drum-and-brass exuberance, funky guitar, and even accordion tango.
Safety Fifth is a lively listening experience, especially recommended
for early morning car commutes, the better to energize one's day!

Three new albums from venerable Native American music publisher Canyon
Records continue to celebrate tribal traditions in new and harmonious
ways. "Horse Dance: Mistatim Simoowin" ($16.72, 44 min. 33 sec.) by
the Cree Confederation is a collection of Pow-Wow songs recorded live
at ASU, with joyful singing, rhythmic drumming, and vibrant Plains
Cree lyrics. "True Melodies" ($16.72) by Grammy-nominated, Oklahoma
Music Hall of Fame singer Cheevers Toppah evolves the musical
traditions of southern Plains tribes with extraordinarily beautiful
multi-part harmonies and arraged vocals. Fawn Wood's "Iskwewak: Songs
of Indigenous Womanhood" ($16.72, 46 min. 57 sec.) is a tribute to the
womanly virtues of strength, intuition, and love, celebrating them as
core qualities of the cultural legacy of indigenous woman everywhere.
Wood draws upon her Cree and Salish lineage to craft stirring,
emotionally powerful songs in this beautiful and moving album. All
three CDs are excellent additions to any Native American music
collections, and highly recommended for both personal and public
library music collections.
