I think that Matt's version used to be on FTP--the first "official" version
of the lyrics that I ever found had that line in it. I'd always heard it
the other way, and I said a great big WHAT? when I saw something about
turning into flies. Made little sense to me--I'm glad that someone
straightened it out (as much as is possible to straighten out anything by
R.E.M.).
Have we had a thread on this group yet about what people have heard instead
of the "official" lyrics (probably have, so pardon me if I rehash)? I know
the typical problem with "Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight"--my own specific
foible was a line in "You Are the Everything." Five minutes before I was
supposed to perform this song I found out that the line that I'd been
singing as "This'll raid your memory" was really "Eviscerate your memory."
Not too far off, but all I needed was another thing to worry about, since I
usually have massive stage fright anyway.
