One year ago, a new radio station began in the UK, Virgin 1215. For their launch,
they got several bands (INXS,REM,Crowded House,Deacon Blue and some others) to
record exclusive covers for them.

The song REM covered was called (I think) "Where's Captain Kirk?".

Does anyone know who recorded this originally, or if it was ever released by REM
as a B-side or something ? (INXS released their cover, "Born To Be Wild" on the
B-side of "The Gift" last year)

Email me if you know anything. Thanks.........

"Where's Captain Kirk" was originally done by Spizz a.k.a. Athletico Spizz
'80. The REM version is available as the A-side of the 1992 Xmas single,
only available through the fan club.

something 1994, the 94 christmas single won't be out for another few months.

The tune was originally released on their Christmas 1992 fan club
single, along with a cover of "Toyland". See the FAQ for details on the
fan club, but the members of this club (with record players, of course)
have been enjoying this tune for almost a year and a half already.
The song, as I understand it, was originally recorded by Athletico
Spizz, and was featured in the film _Urgh! A Music War_. Think I got that
right. Anyway, 'tis a wonderfully goofy tune from an oeuvre that R.E.M.
has often plumbed with great success.
