What other bands do R.E.M. fans like?

While I've been using the net for a while, I have never posted to this
news group before. So, if there is a proper etiquette here that I am not
following, my apologies.

I have a request for all of you R.E.M. fans. I happen to be a fanatic about
U2 and I frequently read or write to the alt.fan.u2 or alt.music.u2 news
groups. One thing that I noticed among the U2 fans is that most fans
seem to pick Pearl Jam and R.E.M. as their second most favorite groups. To me,
this makes logical sense. Now I don't wish to start a flame war here, but
these three groups are very similiar. In my opinion (and only my opinion), they
each have a powerful, charismatic lead singer. Eddie Vedder, Michael Stipes
and Bono each have distinct voices, yet are also very good singers. These
three groups have consistently produced good albums. Lyrically, each group
has addressed a variety of social concerns, each in their unique way.

Just like some of you may only know U2 through the Joshua Tree or Achtung
Baby (which are U2's most popular albums, based on sales), I know Pearl Jam
mostly through Ten. I was first introduced to Pearl Jam when my former
roommate awoke me from a pleasant sleep by blasting "Even Flow" on the stereo.
Strangely enough, this remains my favorite Pearl Jam song. As far as R.E.M., I
have enjoyed their music since "Radio Free Europe"; however, I would not
necessarily call myself a fanatic about them as I would about U2. But to me,
these three groups represent some of the best music today. While Pearl Jam's
sound is clearly more "heavier" than the other two groups, they all seem
to have musical similarities. Therefore, if I may be so bold, I would like
to hear from R.E.M. fans and what they think of these two groups. Do
R.E.M. fans place U2 and Pearl Jam as among their favorites? When answering
this question, I ask that you look at all of the music the groups have
produced (i.e. if you didn't happen to like Zooropa or Vitalogy, but loved
all of their other works, don't base your answer on your opinion for
just one album). I am open to both positive and negative comments, but
please keep the conversation clean (i.e., writing "U2 sucks" will not give
me a very informative answer).

I will post this same message to the Pearl Jam news group. You can reply to
the net or to me directly. Thank you all for your time and Happy holidays.

Ciao,

John

Personaly, for me those 3 are my top faves. U2 is just as good new as
old, AFAIC. And I've liked Pearl Jam ever since I saw the "Alive"
video for the first time watching MTV late at night. I just think all
3 of these bands care an awful lot about their music and it shows.
Peal Jam threatesn to burn out more quickly than the other two, but
who knows? REM threatened to burn out around their 3rd album too.
Nirvana *did* burn out after their 3rd album. (I was never much of a
fun, but hey... it's a odd coincidence).

Well, i don't, but I seem to be the exception rather than the rule. In
fact, I don't much like U2 or Pearl Jam, really (though I did like
"Sunday, Bloody Sunday" once a long, long time ago). I love R.E.M. not
for their "rockin'-ness," but for their melodic complexity -- the way
the harmonies and counter-melodies intertwine and the unusual
instruments and arrangements. (A4TP is one of my favorite albums,
along with OOT and Reckoning).

Other groups that I love include:

Genesis (old...like Trick of the Tail and Lamb Lies Down on Broadway)
The Beatles (later stuff)
CSN&Y
Jethro Tull
Led Zepplin
Moody Blues
YES
They Might Be Giants

These groups tend to have the sort of complex music that I like (I love
things with a harmony part that I can sing). OK, TMBG might not, but
the lyrics are so funny sometimes...

Happy New Year everyone!

Nope...here's some bands I listen to a lot when R.E.M. is not playing:

- Gigolo Aunts - from Boston, great upcoming group with two CDs out.
- Grant Lee Buffalo
- The Gufs - from Milwaukee - 3 CDs out, amazing live!
- Elivs Costello

This R.E.M. fan also likes U2 and Pearl Jam...AND Elvis Costello. Mind
you, I also like Ministry, King Crimson, post-Licensed to Ill Beastie
Boys, Metallica, Pink Floyd, The Cure, The Smiths, Kate Bush, 1920's
blues, Wagner, Clannad, Public Enemy and Tom Waits.

You got a problem with that? TOO %$@#IN' BAD!! :-) :-) :-)

Music is highly subjective. I like R.E.M. I figure most people who do
have a generally open ear for music and might like just about anything
imaginative, no matter how diverse. There are always preferences, of course.

Both are from Canada, and are commonly compared to REM. I don't

The Hip remind me a lot of REM, and that probably has a lot to do with
their lead singer, who has that same stage presence that Stipe does.

I never thought of 54-40 having anything in common with REM other than the
fact that they're a good band.

I suppose in some ways the Hip could be compared to REM but go put in
some Midnight Oil then listen to the Hip. I think there are far more
similarities there.....

Some of the songs on Life's Rich Pageant remind me of 54-40, particularly
Begin the Begin.

As well, when I bought the latest 54-40, my brother mistakenly thought that
Radio Luv Song was off R.E.M's Monster CD (due to the song not the song name).

My favourite bands:

1) Tragically Hip
2) R.E.M
3) Midnight Oil
4) U2
5) Nirvana
6) Sloan
7) Pearl Jam
8) Mercury Rev
9) 13 Engines
10) 54-40

Yep, they're about as mainstream as you can get, but I like them.

Day for Night is the Hip's best album so far. (Musically, I think that it is
their most diverse effort. Lyrically, The Hip came up big. And, IMHO, I
enjoy the fact that there is no fight song in the genre of:

The last Hip album I could stand was "Up to Here". It has nothing to do
with their popularity. If that were a factor, why would I like REM? The

You gotta be kidding me! Obviously, you've never listened to
Pink Floyd when high. Even clean, if you just close your eyes,
The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon are amazing works. And,
I _do_ like the Cranberries, Nirvana, Enya, some of the Stones,
