I sit in my room listening to pavements "Camera" cover on the Cut Your
Hair single, wondering if anyone knows the roots to this much publicized
obsession with REM. Also, does anyone have the lyrics to "Secret power of
the picket fences" by pavement on the "NO ALTERNATIVE"Compilation released
last year. Thought, Opinions Please.

UNSEEN POWER OF THE PICKET FENCE

There's some bands I'd like to name to ya (cha)
And one of them is R.E.M.
Classic songs with a long history,
Southern boys just like you and me.
R.E.M.
Flashback! It's 1983.
Chronic Town was their first EP.
Later on came Reckoning.
Defenseless art, titles to match, <---- ?
South central rain,
Don't go back to Rockville,
Harborcoat,
Pretty Persuasion,
You're gonna a be a camera. <----his mistake or mine?
Time after Time was my least favorite song. X2

The singer he had long hair,
and drummer, he knew restraint,
The baseman had all the right moves,
and the guitar player was no Saint.

So let's go way back to the ancient times
when there were no fifty states.
And on a hill, there stands Sherman,
Sherman and his mates.

And their marching through Georgia.

Marching through Gergia
G-G-G-G-G Georgia
Etc.

And there stands R.E.M.

That's it as best as I can figure. Hope it helps.

3 corrections:

... a few bands I'd like to name-check [seems to be a combination of
name-drop and sound-check. maybe some musician term i don't understand.]

... Finster's art and titles to match [Howard Finster drew the cover art
for _Reckoning_, as well as the Talking Heads' _Little Creatures._]

... you were born to be a camera [doesn't match R.E.M.'s lyrics, but
does match Pavement's.]

Also, I think a complete version can be found in the lyrics site. Check
the FAQ when it comes around again.]

Could they be saying Finster's art? (That word is slurred
pretty badly) and the last word is thoroughly incomprehensible.

Oh and I was wondering is that song "Unseen Power..." an insult to rem or
a tribute? I can't tell if Pavement is totally smashing their rep. or
praising them. please respond Meghan-...@lulu.acns.nwu.edu.

This has been debated many times here on this group. I would say that
Pavement are not slagging REM at all. I think it is just a fairly
irreverent way of paying homage to a band that obviously had a big
influence on the Pavement sound. Besides that, Pavement cover "Camera"
on the "Cut Your Hair" single...

"Finster's art, and titles to match"

I thought this was one of the coolest lyrics in the song though it took me a
while to figure it out.

I always thought it was "if I could be your camera"

Close. It's "If I'm to be your camera, then who will be your film?"
