well, it's been discussed, but not on this board or i think outside of
private e-mail since before last night it pretty much fell into the
"unconfirmed gossip" category. Last night was the first time Mills ever
mentioned it. and it was a sweet way to do it.

I can definitely understand why Mike wouldn't want everyone and their
brother/sister/grandpa/etc. to know about his boy; kids are awfully important
people to their parents and parents may not necessarily want the whole
world to know everything about them.
I mean, I adore my own son, but I don't really talk *that* much about him
on the net, even though sometimes I'd like to. This is a conscious decision;
I just don't want to put a whole lot of info about my son out there in the public
domain. It just makes me nervous to do it. And this is just usenet, and I'm just
ms. non-famous, average person, y'know? Mike's situation is magnified
ten-millionfold. So I can definitely understand the reason for the silence.

i think it's one of those things that's really difficult to speculate about.
Presumably he will talk about it at some point with the press - when they
finish asking him about Michael. :) And then we will have more answers, or
not. But it's an inherently difficult thing to discuss since Mills is so
sparing in discussing personal aspects of his life.

Hello, folks!
Well, I for one am stunned. I can completely understand wanting/needing
to keep one's private life private, but how this tidbit never made it to
a public forum I'll never know. Maybe it attests to the quality of the
people involved, eh?
My mind is reeling with questions the answers to which are none of my

OK,
Before the show there was a little kid bouncing around, mugging for the
audience and having a great time.
I speculated that it was Mike's nephew, as his brother has kids and he
looked like a little version of Mike.
I asked Mr. McCaughey and he was hesitant to say but sort of answered in
the affirmative when I asked if it was his nephew.
During the show, before Why Not Smile, Mike brought him out and said:
"I'm very happy to have my beautiful son Jullian at the show with me" or
something to that effect, before kissing him. The kid ran back into the
side. Michael was looking down during this at the kid as well, I think.

What struck me more was that if he's eight years old he was probably born in

Ok, so here's the thing before we all fly off the handle, though:
Isn't Mills' nephew named Julian? I don't know why I think that or why
I even heard that at one point or why I should care, but for some
reason I do remember thinking that. I know it's none of my business
and yadda yadda yadda, but who does remember Mitch's kids names? Isn't
one of them Julian? Perhaps Mike was just being affectionate at the
show? ("You're like my son, too....")
yea yea, mind your own god damned business, I know.

No, a lot of us have known for years that Mike Mills has a son. We just
never discussed in in public (as opposed to private email or chats). It
has been brought up here on occasion too, but no one ever replied to any
posts mentioning it. Last winter, someone from Sweden said that an
article about R.E.M. in a local paper or magazine said that Mills had a
son and asked us what we knew. No one replied to that post. A few months
later someone else asked about Mills' son and again no one replied. I was
really proud of us all, as Mills had never publicly discussed the son that
I knew of and we were letting him have his privacy on the matter at least
as far as public discussion went.

I must say, it's testament to the character of the on-line fan community
that this can be kept private until Mike made it public. Sometimes, we're

i was actually pretty shocked when i stumbled into this thread. i couldn't
believe that it was actually being discussed in public as opposed to the
private little, "oh yeah, it's true" emails. i only found out about this about
four years ago and i know of so many online fans who knew long before that. i
think it's pretty incredible that this, of all things, managed to be kept

you don't have be "stalker-esque" to be on the recieving end of gossip. after
you hear the same thing over and over and after you've had conversations with
other people who've heard things you tend to put two and two together and
eventually realize that you've all of a sudden become privy to something
private. people talk and sometimes you find yourself listening to them.

and well, people talk about famous people. i know people who insist up and

that's something intensely private i might claim to know about cruise. how
does that make us "stalkerish?"

nicole and the fact that they're both beards for each other? it would fit right
into my sweeping disregard for posting on topic these days.
and i hear that lara flynn boyle...oh, nevermind.
Even though I am SO not interested in getting into this, I'll clarify
my original statement, just ONCE: yes, yes, yes, you cannot help
hearing what you hear. And I guess human nature makes us spread and re-
tell such things, which is not necessarily a bad thing (I'm actually
reading a really good book by Patricia Meyer Spacks called Gossip which
suggests otherwise). However, the um....intensity of some people's
posts was, I guess, freaking me out. I'm not gonna get into who or
what, I just had to mention I found a few things a little creepy.
Fine, I retract stalkeresque. But I do not retract the fact that it
scares me how much some people know about someone who doesn't even know
they exist. I'm sure certain people would be frightened by it too.

is it better to hear such information and not bother spreading it around or is
it better to hear it and run here and post it. having respect for someone's
privacy, yet sharing a couple of emails with a friend about, "hey, i had no
idea mike had a son...cool", is a lot better than blabbling it around. the way
you are throwing the words like "creepy", "stalkeresque", etc. around tends to
make me believe you think people actually care about this. i havn't even
thought about mike's kid in a couple of years...and, for that matter, i don't
even think that any private emails i've had in the past few months with people
that frequent this board have had anything to do with rem in the least.
i should have just stayed out of this thread entirely, but i was so surprised
when i stumbled into the middle of it, that i posted without thinking. i just
kind of resent this "i'm sure...would be frightened by this too", because that
insinuates that you think that email after email has been shared and copied and
passed along where people sit all day wondering about mike's son and how old he
is and where he's from and who the mom is. i don't know most of that, i don't
care about most of that and i don't lose any sleep over ANY of that. i mean,

Well I sure as hell don't.
Ok, first of all, my original post was not aimed at you, I don't even
know who you are. I don't care wether you lose sleep over it or not.
Why are you getting so offended and defensive? From where I was
sitting, one of the responses to my original post DID look overzealous
and obsessive...and it WASN'T YOURS. What, I don't have a right to
react to that? Oh sorry. I guess I don't. I'll check with you next
time.
Now I take it that you personally know everyone involved in this thread
and can speak for all in saying no one cares, no one is obsessing, etc.
If that's the case, you get a big apology from me. Seriously! If those
people are offended and you're speaking for them, then I honestly do
apologize for hurting people's feelings in my haste.
If that's not the case, however, then I must say again....RELAX. Why
are you getting so involved when I wasn't even talking about YOU in the
first place? Freud would have a field day with you, honey.
i never assumed that it was aimed at me, however, my initial intention was to
point out that most of the people who knew about this and said nothing aren't
freaks.
>Why are you getting so offended and defensive?
the only thing that i have defended (twice now) or, rather, objected to, was
the bizarre usage of the word "stalker"...

you have ever right to react, as do i. and, iirc (you can look), i responded to
your post in the same way you posted. you can react all day long and, as i'll
say over and over evidently, there's nothing "stalkeresque" about sharing a
couple of emails about something of that nature.
>Now I take it that you personally know everyone involved in this thread
>and can speak for all in saying no one cares, no one is obsessing, etc.
yeah, that's exactly what i was doing. wasn't that obvious? for god's sake...if
you'll go back, i frequently use the little one letter word "i"...my posts were
to point out that, while there might be a freak or two that lurks among us, i
take a little exception to words like "stalker" and your "i'm sure others would
be frightened too" comment. can you speak for others? eh? if so, then a sincere
apology to you from me. if that's the case, you get a big apology from me.
Seriously!
> Freud would have a field day with you, honey.

Listen, I swear to God I was not talking about you and whoever sharing

Well if it was aimed at me, you are still totally off base. I don't have
any fervent interest in the doings of Mike Mills either. I am mildly
curious about him and the others in my favorite band because they are
interesting individuals living fairly interesting lives. But let me assure
you, it is a curiousity on a par with my interests in many other subjects.
Certainly not the type of interest of a stalker.
I found your post saying something about how maybe he was really Mike's
nephew to be rather silly. It seemed to me that you were the one with the
untoward interest in Mike and needed to believe that he wasn't a father. I
assumed that this interferred with your fantascies of him and wanted to
set you straight. That's why my post was so firm, to try to knock sense
into what seemed to be obsession on your part.
I knew about Mike's son because I have a couple of acquaintances that
have seen them together in the past and were told who the boy was by
people in a position to know. The subject has come up in private
conversation and they knew I wasn't going to post it publicly on a venue
such as rmr as long as Mike hadn't mentioned him in public. But now he
has introduced him to the public. I had in the past wondered how the son
might feel when he got older seeing Peter's kids referred to all the time
as the only offspring of the three R.E.M. bandmembers. On the other hand,
I can certainly understand why a public figure would want his child to
have as much privacy as possible while growing up.
We don't dwell on Zoe and Zelda. People comment on seeing them and how
cute they are. And it's fun to see a bad ass rocker like Peter turn into a
melting papa with his girls. (As is apparent from his comments.) I can't
see us treating Mike's son any differently.

Speaking of gossip and just... stuff... I remember reading aaaages ago on
RMR that Stipey was married for a few fleeting moments -- or did I just
invent that somehow?? At the time I was a bit skeptical about it, 'cause he
doesn't seem the settle-down type to me. Also, I haven't heard any other
mention of him being married/divorced. Info, anyone?
And while we're on the subject of Mills (or we were, or something), is
HE married? *SHRuG* I've been a fan for a long time, but I don't know this
shit.

apparently, there is a fake stipe on the internet, who goes by the name
of "mr. b happenin" or something like that. people have said he is a
convincing faker, but a faker nonetheless. and this online stipe
allegedly lives in vermont with a wife and kid (from what i've heard).
doesn't sound like the real mr. stipe, to me.

as far as i know, mills isn't married either. last i heard, he had a
girlfriend (wasn't jill her name?).

They are no longer seeing one another.

Isn't that kind of the point though?

Especially shocking for those of us who hadn't. I mean, wow. WOW. Not like
I'm offended or anything (so he had a child out of wedlock, happens all the
time), it's just a stunner that the kid's 8 years old and only just now
presented by Mike. Though I understand, it's got to be hard for someone in
Mike's position to make sure the child grows up "normally" -- not in the
spotlight. Michael and Peter get so much scrutiny already...Mike has every
right to want his privacy.

so does his child's mom.
--dez, he didn't make this baby by himself, after all (i mean, that
would pretty damned amazing, but c'mon!)
>yeah, this mr. b guy is very convincing and has fooled a lot of people
this guy has also pretended to be Mike Mills. funniest (and stupidest
thing) he ever did was show up in an R.E.M. chat with his little
"entourage," including a fake Courtney Love. didn't take me long to
bust their lying asses, either <gloat gloat>.
--dez, has busted several fake Courtney Loves already, hee hee!
dez replied:
>so does his child's mom.
Hmm, I guess I could've phrased that better. (sheepish grin) Of course, the
mom, too. Mother and child are in the same situation, practically: live
halfway "normal" lives, or forever be associated with Mike?
Angie,
who honestly never expects to find out who the mother is, nor does she need to
know...

Adolescent fools with nothing but time on their hands, who but their
way into conversations which don't involve them just to say something
"funny". ha. ha. ha. Why bother? Honestly? Cranky from your lack of
nappy time? What?

if you post on a *public* forum, you can expect most anyone to read
and perhaps to respond to your post. if you want your thoughts to be
read only by one person, then e-mail that person.
