They did a cover of rems "camera"..it can be found on the "Cut Your Hair"
single!!

They also wrote a song about the place where i live called "I Love Perth"

..its not that common for a band write a song about us here in perth...
though rem did start their monster tour here..so i guess we must be
good!!
..just a plug for my fair city : )

i guess some rem fans may find them a bit wierd..but i can draw some
strong
parallels between pavement and bands such as radiohead, remy zero and
sonic youth..

why do you not think it a cover? It wasn't their song and they played
it, what else does covering a song entail? It may not have been a
particularly good cover, but it's still a cover.

I don't think it's a matter of it not being good, so much as that the band
took a lot of liberties with the lyrics and structure of the song, so that you
might not know (other than for the guitar line and a few phrases) that it was
a cover of Camera in the first place. But in terms of quality, if you like
Pavement's style (and of course not everyone does), you'll probably like this
cut as well.

Actually it's pretty cool when a band turns the concept of "cover" into a gray
area. There were some examples of this on the _Surprise Your Pig_ album, as
well (e.g. Vic Chesnutt's ITEOTWAWKI).

Not until S.M. learns the words.

Anyway, I bought the album today, and the CD-ROM you get with it is plenty

Except that, according to the ad in today's Village Voice, the shows
are sold out. If I had money for tickets, I'd be depressed, but I've
spent all my money on Fountains of Wayne and Beth Orton, and then
there's this R.E.M. show that I shelled out a day's paycheck for.
(Yay minimum wage!)

Anyway-- if you're really determined, you could go to the Irving Plaza
box office and plead-- the ad wasn't terribly clear as to whether all
three shows were sold out, or just one. Or show up on the night of
your choice and hope for the best.

yeah...what ron said! :-)

i don't consider it a cover because aside from the aforementioned liberties,
the song isn't sung in the spirit that it was intended. the meaning is lost in
their effort at being snide. (imo, that is...others have had different
interpretations of the song...)

that aside, i love the song. i like pavement in general...

I really discovered Pavement a couple of years back, when I borrowed
'Brighten the Corners.' I followed that up with 'Wowee Zowee,' and they've
become one of my favourite bands.

They're just so brilliantly refreshing in the liberties they take -
musically, lyrically, structurally, citrus-sounding guitars, voices
sometimes bordering on out-of-tune; but it's superb. They're quite
experimental, without having to 'go electronic.'

I draw lots of parallels with R.E.M. but I think most of them are with
'Early R.E.M.' I think, perhaps, Pavement have now overtaken R.E.M. in
being so self-consciously alternative, uncaring and experimental with what
they do with guitar-based music. Pavement are as close to freeform beat
poetry-rock as R.E.M. were with Murmur, Reckoning and Fables.

I agree with prop, who also draws comparisons with Radiohead... that's
really my triumvirate of bands... R.E.M., Pavement, and Radiohead. Plus,
Blur have always cited Pavement as a major influence. I would love to see
them live; Mogwai in support would be good, too.

yeh!!..someone agreed with me!!
definately see them live if u get a chance..pavement actually come to
australia quite regularly..well at least every 18 months..so ive been lucky
to see them a few times
I havent really gotten in Mogwai yet..i find them a bit slow...although they
are quite sonically refreshing..
perhaps a Mercury Rev support...thatll be great!!!

of course a Pavement/REM gig would be the best..
although i heard once that the two bands werent that close as bands go, or
werent that fond of each other?!?!?
i doubt it though..anyone else heard anything??

Hm. This thread is colliding nicely with the "strip down" thread.

So what if the meaning is lost? That's what makes it a reinterpretation.
Covers shouldn't be carbon copies -- they should explore other
possibilities that the song offers.

While I haven't heard Pavement's Camera since I gave that single to Ron
(I wasn't into them yet, so I didn't make myself a copy -- stupid!
stupid!), it almost seemed like it was more an exploration of what a
cover could be than a literal take on the song. But I'd need to relisten
a few times to know for sure.

This is exactly what i meant by asking why you didn't think it was a
cover. Most of the songs on Surprise.. take many liberties with REM
songs as well (we walk quickly comes to mind). You could also look at
Superchunk covers of Sebadoh songs, which always get the "lyrics" wrong.
I think that since michael's lyrics are hard to decipher it would be
acceptable to take dramatic liberties since you don't know most of the
time what the hell he is saying. I've been into the band ten years and
still can't tell right away. Just a thought.

Blur have been around longer than Pavement have as far as releasing albums goes
(Leisure came out in 1990, Slanted & Enchanted came out in 1991)... I'm sure
Graham has always liked Pavement, but I doubt he'd ever considered them a

agreed...i think we're on the same page as far as our feelings on the "cover".
at this point it's probably nothing more than a semantic argument.

it's a remake, perhaps...or a reinterpretation. or, even, just THEIR
interpretation. but, i just have always thought of a cover as being a more
literal take on a song.

i contradict myself on that defination all the time, but that's my general
feelings about it.

perhaps...but, in this case, they took a song that we all have a general idea
of what the meaning is and changed it so they could take a dig at the band.

if i took the song losing my religion and sang the verses correctly, but
inserted "rem sucks" over and over and over into the chorus would that be a
cover? i know it's not the same thing, exactly, but pavement's version of
camera isn't a very nice song.

Which, of course, doesn't sound much like Pavement. And that's all to the
good really because the whole Pavement thing seems to me to be one of those
things that's easy to do but hard to do well. The only bands I an think of
who've got any mileage out of it are the Delgados and Cable, both of whom
have rather more to them than their obvious Pavementisms.

No, it doesn't sound like Pavement at all. I know so many Blur fans who think
it does and hate it because of that... they've obviously never heard anything

I agree it's very different but better than brighten i think. Although
blur connections (which ever way the influence flows) it's a very Brit
album. FYI, i don't like the song which goes "i bleed in beige..."
