I had to jump in as I just bought (yesterday) the Dylan and the Band
live 1966 CD. I've had it on bootleg tapes and vinyl forever - which
is why I haven't rushed out to buy it before now. Listening to this
version is like someone took the fluff of the stylus (a reference
which dates me horribly I realise!).
I looked at a couple of the expanded Byrds CDs (including Mr
Tambourine man) but I figured that I could tolerate my scratchy vinyl
for a while yet. I think that most of the extra songs on these
editions were on the Byrds box set from a few years ago.
I also picked up the new Richard Thompson CD Mock Tudor and notice
that Joey Waronker plays drums on one of the tracks. After months of
prevarication, I bought the Flaming Lips - Soft bulletin and,
although I haven't bought a huge amount of new CDs this year, it is
one of the most remarkable albums I've heard.
To top out my music buying frenzy, I also ordered a boxset of the late
great Howling Wolf.

I've only had chance to play this through once since I received it and I
liked it a lot. It's kind of a celtic version of Beth Orton's 'Trailer Park'
album - a blend of musical materials, traditional and modern. Particularly
good production, good songwriting - I think this could spend a great deal of
time near my cd player in year 2000. There's sound samples, biography etc.

Hey -- I finally got this last one, as a Xmas present from my girlfriend. On
my way to work this morning I listened to the first three songs. I *really*
like it so far. (I mean, I figured I would.) The first song, River of Orchids,
I think, with its intertwining rhythm and vocal lines, was especially
impressive.

No sadder than the US retail scene. I was actually in a mall briefly on the

But not removing Mermaid Smiled, I hope? I am still annoyed that it had to be
one or the other on the releases. I really liked Mermaid Smiled. Sigh.
I still like to insert Fretless and the cover of First We Take Manhattan into
OOT to make it into the album I would have preferred.

Al Bowlly? that kind of stuck out like a sore thumb Hank! My Grandma likes
Al Bowlly (and she's not the sort of Grandmother to also have Electric
Ladyland in the same cd changer!). Are you spearheading an Al Bowlly
revival?
It`s interesting. It`s showing up on every best-of list I read. I like
it, I got a cassette copy of it for free. There are some cool songs in it,
but listening to it on headphones in the computer lab on Walkman, it just
floats around into background music. Too much of it is too airy and
background-y for me, but there are some great moments. Waiting For A
Superman is a great song, I had it stuck in my head earlier.

LOL! Well it's like this y'see, I was doing some post-Xmas shopping
in Barnstorm Records in Dumfries and I picked up a bunch of stuff -
including the Dylan, Flaming Lips and Richard Thompson above. I had
£50 worth of vouchers and those three came to £47. I said that I'd go
to have a rummage in the bargain bin at the back of the shop to see if
I could find something to make it up to £50. As you might know,
Richard Thompson wrote a song called 'Al Bowlly's in heaven' and, when
I saw the Al Bowlly CD for £2.99 I thought Why not?!
It's kind of cool in a cheesy retro kind of way but I don't think that
it's one that I'll play that much (or ever again!) but that's how I
came to buy it.
I still haven't got round to giving it a second listen. Not that I didn't
like it the first time, or that I wouldn't if I hadn't. Maybe I'm too
cheerful these days.

Those three are definite standouts; which I suppose is why two of them were
singles. The overall quality is very good throughout, mind you, although
it's not exactly a tour de force for Colin.
Anyone curious, BTW, can scope out some downloads (for a limited period,
etc.) at the TVT website.

I was eating salmon (not all day, obviously). But my local record store of

I know. But they could have chosen even worse. Isn't there a Canadian or
Danish or something version with them both on?

I don't have good enough copies of either to do that effectively. Not that
I'm sure I would have.
