I hear you've got a few opinions regarding our boys Oasis, something
along the lines of:
: Supersonic, what a joke,
: I don't see ya'
: Don't even wanna be ya'
Dunno if those are your precise words, 'cos I haven't exactly rushed
out to get your new album yet, but apparently that's the general gist
of it. Well, ooh dear, old chap... You probably didn't want to do
that.
We ain't got much to shout about over here in ol' Blighty: We're
dull, dirty, godless; our beer's warm, our Prime Minister's a twat and
our cows are crazy. BUT... One thing we're fiercely proud of is our
music. Britain always *has* produced the world's finest pop music and
always will, and woe betide anyone who comes up against our latest
icons. Remeber that 'ugly' little Jacko / Jarvis affair? While your
fella's lawyers were shrieking about litigation, this entire country
was pissing itself with laughter, we elevated our lad to folk hero
status.
Now, grandad, I can understand your being a little bitter about the
way Oasis sprung to superstardom straight from the pub gig circuit,
while in your case it took about nine years. But whining about the
throwaway nature of their lyrics, sounds a bit rich coming from the
Riddler himself. You see, we've got this *thing* over here, we call
it a sense of humour, you really ought to try it some time... It
allows one to blatently rip off riffs and vocals from classics and
write rhymes like:
: Your music's shite,
: It keeps me up all night...
(Granted, that type of language probably wouldn't get played on the
radio over there due to your country's rabid puritanical attitude).
But so long as it's all done with yer' tongue firmly in one cheek, the
punters will buy it, adore it, and sing along joyously at your gigs.
I'm not slating your country's music as a whole... You can and have
produced some fine bands - Cracker springs to mind - but whatever you
do, face it, we generally do better... It's more intimate, it shapes
our kids' lifestyles, defines our culture and we love it... Truly,
deeply and stickily.
Fine, you gave us rock 'n roll, but we shaved it's head, duffed it up
and called it Punk (and, boy, did that ever go over your heads). You
retaliated with Jon Bon Jovi's poodle haircuts, so we sent you The
Smiths (Fwooosh... oops, there goes another). And while you were all
busy going "whooo" and "awlraaaaht" at Maria Carey's "Whiney Whiney
Bleat Bleat" tour, we were crowd surfing to dozens of earnest, three
chords, heads down, and see-who-gets-to-the-end-of-the-song-first
guitar bands. And loving every minute of it.
You see, Michael, Oasis and their ilk are young and fresh, after the
droning shoe gazings YOU bunch of brontasauri have proffered lately,
it sounds pretty much like you've dried.

i am not saying that oasis is a patheticly horrible band, but they can be

love that song.
oh yeah, oasis isn't a pthetic band (they are most of the time) but their
lyrics are. :)
oh yeah, i forgot that it was like, a law that you have to listen to them

What's all that crap about? And where did you get it from? You should
read what rem have to say about wake-up bomb.
Peter Buck: *Michael wrote that particular song about a club in New
York that the new glam crowd hang at. All those young pretty boy
models and pretty girl models, showing up and dressed up like it
was 1972. He wrote it about that club.*
Not one damn word about Oasis. Between the lines of your lousy job
it's pretty obvious that you can't cope with the fact that British pop
history is written in the past tense.

I'm English and I don't like Oasis. Sure a couple of songs off their
last album are ok, but the band as a whole are way over-rated. Everytime
you pick up a paper theres some journalistic crap about the brothers
Gallagher. Noel said this, Liam did that. I don't bloody care!!!
They've only released 2 albums and the British Music Press are all on
there knees. Well I'm sorry, it takes more than a couple of average
albums to "The Biggest Band since the Beatles" in my book.
Will Oasis last as long as REM has?, will they release as many classic
albums? Perhaps, but I doubt it.
Malcolm.

Actually, Stipe has said that the song is about his days as a teenager,
coping an attitude and briefly liking glam rock. He also was inspired by
recently seeing teens at a "glam rock" themed night at some night club.
For the record,
"See Ya, don't wanna be ya" is an old phrase used by young male teens in
the
'70s as a sort of cock-walk putdown. I also think the song reflects on
Stipe's changing attitudes towards what he finds important over the years
and the vapidness of being a teen idol.
As for Stipe vrs Oasis, if the band is only doing limited promotion the
music
press is bound to come up with something about REM to talk about. Hence
we get all this bullshit about Stipe and Oasis and essays explaining why
the
band is about to break up (which explains why they just signed a new 5
album
deal with Warners - not).
Stipe is very encouraging of new bands, as are all of the members of REM.
They aren't jealous of anyone's success. (But then they did just sign for
the highest paying record deal of all time.) I'm sure Stipe would be a big
supporter of Oasis if they were a hipper band. I know he loves the better
British bands.
As for this crap about English music vrs US music - well it's a load of
crap. The rock'n'roll music of both countries intertwine quite nicely.
Both countries have had bands that have shook up and greatly affected the
sound of rock'n'roll. Choosing the r'n'r artists of only one country to
like would be greatly limiting your enjoyment of some great music. (And
the word "punk" for rock was stolen by McLaren from a famous magazine that
chronicalled punk predecessors Patti Smith, Richard Hell, and countless
others that had short hairs cuts and a punk attitude before McLaren
manufactured the Sex Pistols as the Monkees of this new movement.)
It is a bogus argument to take the worst of one country and compare it to
some of the better bands of another. (Not that Houston's mainstream pap
can be correctly called r'nr.)
As for Stipe's age - big deal! The important thing is that he and R.E.M.
are still making vital great music. For pathetic old losers who used to be
incredible take a look at your countrymen The Rolling Stones. I doubt that
R.E.M. would ever be apathetic enough to just roll around raking in dough
after their love of music and ability to play has long left them. But
hopefully they will continue to be great performers as long they can
manage to hold on to their instruments like BB King and some other great,
but sort of elderly, performers.
Your argument about age only works for shallow, MTV generation fans who
only care about identifying themselves with the latest thing and moving on
quickly (short attention spans bred by MTV and it's ilk in other
countries) to the next latest thing. That has nothing to do with real
music appreciation and I don't consider people who are only searching for
the latest fad true music fans.

Errrrr, in case you failed to notice, or just like to flame, punk as in
Ramones/Dolls etc is a totally different offering from punk as in
Pistols/Scarlet. Trying to put them in the same ilk is like trying to
throw
AC/DC and The Stones in there and call them both Rock N' Roll.. Sure they
both
conform to Rock N' Roll, blues in rock but who the fuck would try to
compare
their music on the same plain?
The real problem here is that the majority of American and English have
this ego trip on how fuckin superior they are as a race, well wake up call
neither of ye are a race, and neither are superior, who can say what is a
better band, its like trying to say who's the best man for the job, in the
majority of cases its not the bloke who has it....
J
p.s also this the REM group so fuck off.<<
1) Errr, in case you failed to notice, the original poster claimed
England *invented* punk. i was just setting the wanker straight. it has
nothing to do with who is superior as a *race* (and if you knew anything
about America, you'd know how problematic the term *race* is, and that
there's no such thing as an "American race").
2) No DUHHH this is the R.E.M. group. you obviously have no freaking
clue who you're talking to, so i suggest strongly that you shut up now.
btw, your rude little email was reported to your postmaster. DON'T EVER
EMAIL ME AGAIN.
very well said, Rebecca (all of it, actually)! :) let me chime in a
little about this last point of yours. last night, i saw the Sex Pistols
(great concert, great band--and hey, i was only in 7th grade the last time
they played the U.S., so if you think i'm trendy, sod off--i've been
waiting 20 years for this!) *ahem* sorry i digressed again.... anyway,
Johnny, addressing the crowd re: his age--only 40, not quite a geezer,
IMHO--said that we (the audience) should ignore MTV and its spew about the
"generation gap," as he felt great being 40, and that good music is
basically "timeless" and should be appreciated by all ages. he also
pointed out that Michael Jackson, friend to children everywhere, is only
two years younger than he is, yet no one accuses MJ of being a "geezer"
(they accuse him of other things, but not that!).
um, R.E.M. content: so Peter's only one year younger than Johnny, and the
rest of the boys are in their 30's, and still making vital, relevant
music, so um, stick that in your pot bong and smoke it, kiddies...... ;)

OK Flame me, I'm sure you've probably gotten enough hate mail over this
aready. And maybe you now beleive that it wasn't about Oasis.
But I just wanted to point out. And this is acutally a question too. How
can you, and all English people say that Oasis are do great? Maybe this
hasn't gotten to you, but among all the stupid things they've said, one of
them was along the lines of "If english music was any good we'd be proud
to bring attention too it, but it's not, it's shite. We're the only good
ones out there." That's not a direct qoute, it's along the lines, but
the meaning is the same.
I agree thay've got some good songs, but they're not what I'd wanted to be
represented by. Every two second s they're getting in trouble, saying
something stupid.
Now I don't know of many English groups, we don't tend to see a lot of
them in Canada. But I'm pretty confident in saying that there must be
other good groups.
-Lindsay
PS. I'm not a member of the MTV generation, I don't get MTV.
PPS. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm putting down Canada or any other
country. That is not my intention.
PPPS. I don't think Oasis should not have opinions, we are all intitled
to them, but to say that these are great people is wrong, because (IMHO)
they aren't.
PPPPS. Please, you can reply to this post, but there's no need for hate mail.
PPPPPS. Just thought I'd put in another PS. =)
Just because Liam Gallagher is an arrogant, half-witted, cocaine
addicted ****wit, it doesn't mean that Oasis don't play great music. If
you expect all your singers to be angels, what do you end up with? (Sir
Cliff Richards????)
Mike
>this ego trip on how fuckin superior they are as a race
****
Just thought you should know we are the same race.. we came from the
same place, and well anyway... the only difference between us is our
accents.
you know...if noel and liam weren't such self-centered jerks, i think
more people (like me, for instance) would find their music enjoyable. i
mean, it doesn't approach the level of talent exhibited by rem, but it's
pretty sweet pop-candy.
but every time i read an oasis interview, or hear comments made by their
egomaniac front-men, i have a stronger desire to use oasis cds for
batting practice....
cmg
i would think, however, that m.stipe would have to be down with it all.
part of his image is that he can't be, but, on a more genuine level he
must be. he pulls arrogant-image shit all of the time. he is as much an
actor as anyone. i mean, he perpetrated so much new style with the
monster tour and in all of the publicity shit.

Ah... Now we're getting into a different territory: Whether a
band's perceived image should have any effect on their popularity.
Just because the Gallagher boys are undoubtably complete and utter
tossers (English phrase - i'm not sure if it means the same thing over
there), should the enjoyment of their music be in any way lessend? I
know not everyone feels this way, but to me the music comes
foremost... It's probably a British thing, since traditionally our
pop stars are arrogant little pillocks, if we all disliked them for
their attitude we wouldn't *have* a music industry.
Don't forget, also, the press just laps up controversy (where do you
think I got the story that Michael Stipe is jealous of Oasis in the
first place?), and since another favourite passtime of British bands
IS winding up the press - you *have* to with the tabloids over here,
or they make it up any way - most of the direct quotes you read about
our bands should be taken with a large pinch of salt.
PS. Just be glad we sent Shampoo to Japan, you lot would never
have forgiven us for them...
PPS. Mind you, we DID palm you off with Tracy Ullman, didn't we?
PPPS. Oh, and John Lennon, but you guys shot him any way so that
doesn't count.

New York Dolls ruled... they were by far the first punk band... bar
none. Besides... the sex pistols were designed as a clothing
advertisement... Malcolm McLaren owns the rights to everything that
band ever did... right down to the name... Johnny Rotten... why else
do you think lyndon didn't use it with PIL.(which is still the best
band to clean your house to)
3 points:
1) sorry, but british punk was better....american punk was just rehashed
sixties surf rock and garage rock (beach boys, troggs, etc.) - nothing
new. british punk was wild and dangerously political, and that's why it
was more influential...the ramones, cheetah chrome, johnny thunders,
etc. can whine all they want, but there are -good reasons- why british
punk ruled, then and now....
2) sid vicious -wild, self destructive, and unmusical- the very
embodiment of punk! unlike the american posers, HE didn't get out of
punk alive....
3) AS for that crap about us punk pre-dating britidh punk, that's
nonsense..no one can pinpoint when punk started. i think some old alice
cooper tunes like "18" and "school's out" are punk, and that's 2 or 3
years before the Doll's, ramones, etc....
UMMM HELLO!?!?!?!?!!??!! POSERS??? Sid Vicious was the EMBODIMENT of
poser! Ever read Johnny Rotten's book? Sid was a follower, a
tag-along. He would have to be more skilled to even play SHITTY! Glen
Matlock was a much better bassist. Even his former band-mates agree.
Sid is dead. Johnny lives. And I'm not even going to get into the
NY/London punk arguement. Oh yeah, and I clean my house to PIL too.

It is truly amazing the difference that one word can make
sorry jen, but johnny lydon and the rest of the surviving pistols have a
vested interest (the money grubbing tour) to slag vicious, and what does
vicious' skill as a bass player have to do with his standing as a punk
icon? BTW vicious was actually a pretty decent drummer...Unlike the
other pistols, vicious LIVED punk, and he paid a heavy price for doing
so, that's why he's not around for the "reunion" tour....
Johnny knew what a poser Sid was, BEFORE he died. So much for that
theory. Sid did and acted anyway someone told him, and merely mimmicked
the other punks in England. He got his clothes from that expensive SEX
shop. That isn't very punk. And if I hear someone say that Sid was
