I figured out what this line in MOTM means. OK, here's the story:
Before Julius Caesar's death, he adopted his 18 year old grandson, who's
name I forget, but he later changed it to Augustus (the month August is
named after him). Anyway, after Caesar's death, a former Roman named
Mark Antony married Cleopatra, the ruler of Egypt. When they married,
Augustus feared they would try to seize power, so he declared war. He
came in with the Roman army into Alexandria. Antony and Cleo. were so
scared that they decided to committ suicide (together) by being bitten by
a snake called an asp. So, I guess that explains it. Credit Stipe with
coming up with this line, he really knows his history.

Actually I thought the story of Cleopatra was fairly well known - I'm sure
that asp showed up in "Asterix and Cleopatra" :-) Or don't you have Asterix
on that side of the Atlantic?

Bill Shakespeare might have mentioned something along these lines too...

Nah. :)

I know for sure that Stipe *must* be referring to the famed movie Indiana
Jones and the Lost Ark when a pragmatic and resourceful Salah proclaims to an
otherwise troubled Indy: "Asps. Very dangerous. You go first."

pK, "I don't know, I'm making this up as I go along."

I'm sure I read somewhere that this quote has something to do withan
old Elizabeth Taylor film. Has anyone elseheard about this??

Not that it really matters, but Anthony & Cleopatra didn't plot to kill
themselves together. Anthony was off fighting and Cleopatra was still in Egypt.
Cleo. got the (false) news that Mark Anthony was dead, so she held an asp to
her chest and let it kill her by biting her. Anthony then heard that Cleopatra
was dead and so killed himself.

A case of Chinese whispers.

Weeeellll. Said violet-eyed beauty did play Cleopatra in
the film. Never saw it but there's likely a scene wherein
Liz clasps an asp to her bosom. Michael might have been
inspired by the awesome sight...

the line refers to Cleopatra, who killed herself with an asp, a common
poisonous snake in egypt.

Wierd, I always thought it referred to Moses changing his staff into a snake,
thus linking it with the earlier line "Moses went walking with a staff of
wood".

Well... hmm. Cleopatra did have an asp bite her in the breast... and
Moses did turn some sticks to snakes. They are linked, but seperate.
Cool.
