My second poll of the month, (there will be no more, i promise) . . .
what's the best show you've ever seen and why?
feel free to wander off into tangents.

k's list:

1. bridge concert, sunday, oct. 18th
it will be damn near impossible to match me seeing r.e.m. performing
amazing! from the fifth row - and country feedback with neil young is
probably going to remain my favorite live version of this song. also, bnl
were great and i spent the entire day staring into the vip lounge at mike
and peter.

2. frank black and the catholics w/ridel high - march '98 (i think)
at one point the guitar player for the catholics played this guitar solo - i
hate guitar solos, i loathe them and i was spellbound at how lyrical,
frenetic and jaw-dropping incredible this performance was. and ridel high
rock my world and played great, too. :)

3. sting - nothing like the sun tour sometime in the mid-80s
i remember nothing of this show except for the encore sting played roxanne
accompanied only by one of the marsalis brothers on sax - wow. i was all of
14 or 15 and i still remember how incredibly great that song was.

thoughts? other votes?

I`ll name a few as well..

1.) Radiohead - Radio City Music Hall last spring - I hate sitting for
concerts, yet I sat for this entire one till the encore(we were in a balcony
and everyone sat), but I was bouncing `round like a madman. It was such an
amazing show and the fact that me and 2 friends, all of us coming from
different colleges on a Friday afternoon, met up, went to New York City, and
caught ever train perfectly added to the overall excitement of it all.

2.) They Might Be Giants - St. Joseph`s University (April `97) or Haverford
College (November `97) {tie} - Every TMBG concert is a high-energy
extravanganza, but the St. Joe`s one was the 2nd time I saw `em and we were
dancing in the aisle behind the seats at the top of the basketball arena and
I pulled a muscle in my arm (not bad, but it ached a little) *dancing*! And
at Haverford, it was this little auditorium and I was 2-3 people away from
the stage and a buncha my friends from college showed up and I didn`t expect
to be hanging out with them and They played Ana Ng & Spiraling Shape
back-to-back.

3.) Beck (as part of the Y100 Fez-tival `97) - Camden E-Centre (June `97) -
I didn`t get tix because I was taking off from work 2 Sundays in a row to
see U2 and a Phillies game, but I wasn`t scheduled and the show sold out by
the time me and my friend Harry decided to go. But my friend Anney found out
her friend Megan couldn`t go so she sold us their tix. And Beck put on one
of the most mind-blowing shows I`ve ever seen. Thousands of people,
completely into just him, stomping his feet and playing a harmonica. And he
played Beercan! The rest of the Fez-tival and that whole day was a lotta fun
too.

Honorable Mention: U2 PopMart @ Franklin Field in June `97, Radiohead @ the
Electric Factory on my birthday!, and the other 4 times I`ve seen TMBG.

Elvis Costello with the Replacements
Mann Music Center in Philadelphia.
Awesome Awesome show with a 20 minute version of God's Comic. Not to mention seeing the
replacements. that speaks for itself.

Fleetwood Mac
Spectrum in Philadelphia
Supposedly Stevie Nicks last show, yet they played a few more dates, and then she came
back again just recently
Mick Fleetwood had an incredible drum solo with drum pads hidden in his vest and crotch
LOL. the second drummer wore a metal viking helmet the whole show

The Descendants
40 Watt
Just incredible, Milo is back! Pit was filled with wasted frat boys, but it was still fun
nonetheless. My husband said that seeing that show made his punk rock life complete. LOL.

Red Hot Chili Peppers with Smashing Pumpkins opening
Tower Theater in Philadelphia
the pumpkins sucked horrendously here, the peppers were incredible though. Was so awe
inspiring that my stupid friends shaved their heads into that spiral haircut flea had in
the video.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones with the Dance Hall Crashers
40 Watt
A riveting experience, i had an absolute blast, especially when i knocked out the guy
behind me who grabbed my crotch UNDER my skirt. The adrenaline was just oozing out of
every orifice at that show.

And of course. . . .the last one
Guadalcanal Diary
40 Watt
They played some incredible new stuff, my hubby said it was one of the best shows he'd
seen bar none. He said it was better then the Frankie goes to Hollywood show he won
tickets too when he lived in San Diego. LOL. It was a fun show. We saw some old friends
and caught up with them. They only show i went to pregnant where i actually had fun.

Sadly, I have never seen R.E.M. in concert (c'mon, guys! Tour! Tour! Tour!),
but here's my list:

Page & Plant, June 9, 1998.
Damn. What a show. They played my very favorite Zeppelin song "Tangerine,"
which made me quite a happy kitten. I was also quite flattered when they
played the song they wrote for *me*: "Heartbreaker" (Not that I've ever had
the opportunity to break anyone's heart, but it's in the first line "Hey,
fellas, have you heard the news? You know that Annie's back in town?" All me,
baby. All me.). They both looked wonderful, and even my dad whom I had to
drag with me, enjoyed the show. They played "Rock 'n' Roll" during the
encore--amazing. And when they played "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You"--chills. I
could go on forever, but I won't.

And my second favorite (give a break--I've only ever been to 4 concerts. Can
you believe my mom wouldn't let me see Tom Petty (in '95) and Bob Dylan (in
'97) when they came?): The Wallflowers. Jakob was rather talkative that night
and even went off on this guy in the audience who had a laser pointer. It was
cool. My best friend has the set list from the show (we were right behind the
sound guys). Before the show, I remarked that I would have paid the $26 just
to hear "Invisible City," but when we got inside, the song wasn't on the set
list. However, Jakob must have known I wanted to hear it, and it was played
first song of the encore. I cried. The opening band (trying to remember their
name - King Crimson, maybe?) sucked. They were just really, really, really
bad. Ach.

Enough from me!

My faves:

1) James at the Roxy in 1991, when everyone got up on stage for "Sit Down."
Also when they opened for the Soup Dragons at the Strand. Also at the Palace,
when I looked over to find Stipe and I were sharing a tiny "bar table."
yummy!!

2) Oingo Boingo -- the Palladium show and the last show ever. 4 1/2 hours.
their other ones were great too (all 20 or so of them)

3) Cake, the eels, Sugarplastic at the Whisky in 1996. Cake's rabid NoCal
following came down for the show and all three bands kicked ass.

4) Trashcan Sinatras in 1991 or so - I just LOVE them.

5) Tuatara at the Ash Grove -- duh.

6) Tracy Bonham in 1994 -- won tickets from KCRW. There were only about 15
people at the Dragonfly, and I think 12 of them were friends and biz folks.
That was great.

WORST SHOW: Scorpions. Wait. Let me explain. My cousin got free tix and I
was 16 and would go to ANY SHOW (you remember those days?) so I went to be with
her. We only lasted 20 minutes. They SUCKED, needless to say. But the two of
us have no sense of direction, so we ended up looking for my car until about an
hour AFTER the show ended. Finally, two security guys drove us around in a
golf-cart type thing till we found it.

SECOND WORST: Dave Matthews last year. After a two-hour car trip to Orange
County, we pay to park and find there's no tickets. Anywhere. We pee in the
trees and go home.

THIRD WORST: Dave Matthews. This time we got in. I took my best friend as a
birthday gift to her. yawn. no they weren't that bad. i got smashed, though,
and ended up missing the second half because I fell asleep in my chair.

1. R.E.M. -- May 1995 -- My first concert and it blew me away.
2. B.B. King -- September 1998 -- Absolutely wonderful. I've never seen
another person who loves music as much as B.B.
3. Sunflower Music Festival -- May 1998 -- Ben Folds Five, Ween,
Superdrag, Tonic, and Medeski Martin and Wood. I was out in the
scorching weather for 12 hours and looked like a strawberry the next day
but it was well worth it.
4. Mancow's Extreme Summer Blowout -- September 1998 -- Gravity Kills,

Hmmmm,

REM- Burgettstown PA 1995. We had lawn seats and it "pissed Old Testament
rain" for most of the show. They played So. Central Rain.

Tori Amos- Boston MA May 1996. What a great place to see a show, especially a
Tori show, The Wang Center. Tori put on a great show.

REM- Albany NY 1995. The first Monster show I saw indoors. They filmed the
video for Tongue that night. The Dead were playing in Albany the next night
and the place was crawling with nice people.

Ani Difranco- sometime in the fall of 93 (I think). She was playing in a small
auditorium at my school. She was on top of things that night and played a
killer set. I've been a fan of her since.

U2- Foxboro Stadium 1996. Pop-Mart was a fun show. My first ever Stadium
show, I wasn't disappointed. U2 is one of those bands that could pull it off.

Letters To Cleo/Belly- Sugarloaf USA. For people who don't know, this is one
of Maine's best ski mountains. Belly played there in jan of 1994 I think. We
were in the front row and the whole room turned into some sort of human wave.
Belly was on fire that night too.

Phish- Boston- New years eve 1994-95. This was the Hot Dog show. One of the
coolest ways to bring in a new year. They played a good three hour set, and
when the midnight struck they flew over the crowd ina Hot Dog and played Auld
Lang Syne. it was wild.

Ask me this next week and I'll give you a different answer.....

right here right now it's...

REM-wise
The Friday BHJob show in 1991. For those who were fortunate enough to
see any of the recent promo shows, you'll know the thrill of seeing
the band in relatively informal and intimate atmosphere is second to
none. You've all heard the tapes-you know why this gig was special.

New Ocean Club, Cardiff November 1984
This was the first time I saw them play live. They were still
relatively unknown in the UK and had only been on TV twice (Tube 1983
and Whistle Test 1984) before this show. It was getting towards the
end of the tour and Michael said a couple of times that they were all
cold and tired and wanted to go home to Georgia. It didn't stop them
turning in a blistering show though - one which restored my faith in
US guitar bands. It's easy to forget that in the early 1980s, US &
UK rock music was in the doldrums like punk never happened. It was
hard finding anything different to listen to.

I would *love* to find a tape of this show BTW

Newport, Wales April 1989
I saw a lot of the UK Green shows but this one stood out. There were
some American youths in the audience who were barracking Michael
throughout. He was getting really mad with them - he asked the crowd
if there was an American Airbase nearby - and I think that this lent
the performance a certain frisson. They did a spontaneous version of
'Let's stay together' in the encores too. In the planned orchestrated
expertience that REM shows had become by then, it was nice to see some
unpredictability again.

Birmingham, England 1985
Just because the Fables shows were just so fucking special. The
recent thread about the glorious rush of train noise with which these
shows started, before Peter did the feedback intro to Gravity's spiky
riff, brought some of this back.

Other bands
The Clash-Barbarella's Birmingham 1977. Paul Simonon spat on me. I
was famous for 15 minutes among my peers as a consequence.

Bob Marley The Odeon, Birmingham 1975. Yeah mon. Powerful powerful
stuff from one of the most charismatic performers the world has ever
seen.

The Who. Top Rank, Sunderland 1971 (1970?) They were still doing the
complete Tommy live. I could still get a sweat thiking about their
live 'Magic bus' from this show. Pete Townsend doing his windmill
thrash was the reason that god invented the electric guitar.

The Pixies. The Studio, Bristol 198something or other. I had
goosebumps for the whole show. I was with my friend Kevin, who's got
a similar musical background to me. Halfway through I shouted at him
"Is it just me, or is one of the best gigs by anyone ever?" He smiled
and agreed with me.

The Beat-Aston University, Birmingham 1979. this was the legendary
show that was compered by John Peel. The Beat (k.a. The English Beat
in the US) were at the time an unsigned band. They played their
hearts out. We just danced and sweated for two hours straight. Peel
came on at the end and said that he was swapping his fee - £350 - for
the fee that the Beat were getting - £70.

The Long Ryders-March 1985, the Mean Fiddler, London. Their first UK
gig.
The Long Ryders were one of the first Paisley/Buckskin Underground
bands to play in England. While their Gram Parsons/Byrds/Waylon
Jennings derived rock music wasn't the most original stuff you've
heard, they gave it loads. A hugely sweaty good natured night. Sid
Griffin would give Peter a run for his money in the most talkative
musician in the world competition.

Bob Mould-Cardiff University 199something or other. He only did a
couple of solo shows the first time he toured and this was one, Tony
Maimone was playing bass and the chap from the Golden Palominos was
playing drums. This, I think was the tour after Workbook came out.

Youssou NDour-Womad Festival, Bracknell. 198something or other. I
stood at the front of the stage for 2 1/2 hrs when they were setting
up the gear just sos I could e as close as I could. Although he may
well be unknown in the US (?), he's as charismatic a performer as Bob
Marley was IMO.

Five Eight-The Point, Atlanta Summer 1991. Dragged along reluctantly
by my friend Rick when I was staying with him, I was grateful that I
went. I've documented my admiration for 5-8 here extensively and I
still think that they're one of the best bands ever to come out of
Athens.

Weather Report-the Odeon Birmingham 1978.
The only time in my life that I was in the same building as the
godlike genius that was Jaco Pastorious.

Bob Dylan NEC Birmingham 1981. I've seen Dylan about 50 times since
1978 but this was the highpoint. He was inspired and the tape I have
of him doing 'Simple twist of fate' still reduces me to a quivering
wreck. The show that he did here with McGuinn and Tome Petty in 1986
was pretty durn good too.

The acoustic Byrds and Jefferson Airplane, Frank Zappa at the 1970
Bath Festival, the Ramones, Elvis Costello and Blondie at the sweaty
grease pit that Barbarella's was in 1978, Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham in
October 1998 at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, Elvis Costello at
Goldiggers, Chippenham supporting Nick Lowe in 198something, BB King
playing with Fleetwood Mac at City Hall Newcastle in 1969, Jimmie Dale
Gilmore playing Dallas for me at the Fleece and Firkin, Bristol, the
Seers the first time I saw them in Bristol, Townes van Zandt drunk to
hell at a folk club outside of Bristol, Martin Carthy in a folk club
in in 1991 in Hampstead, T.Rex the three times I saw them, Free
supporting them at the Bay Hotel, Sunderland in 1968, the Faces at the
Mecca Ballroom in Sunderland, Can at Newcastle City Hall February
1972, Fotheringay, John Martyn, Richard Thompson, Johnny Cash, Bill
Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys in Nashville..................

Too many gigs, too many gigs, too many gigs .................

OK here I go:

1) R.E.M. October 25th 1998 Radio Theatre London
Only an hour long but to see them that close and playing so well will stay with
me for years yet. Add to that speaking to Mike and Peter afterwards, Heaven.:)

2) R.E.M. Omni Atlanta GA November 19th 1995
I saw all three of the Atlanta gigs and they were all good but this was my
favourite even if I ended up seated behind the stage for it. They were playing
so well with real energy whic I felt had dissipated somewhat on the last night.
They also did Nightswimming and a touch of Don't Fear The Reaper.

3) Elvis Costello Royal Albert Hall 1986 I think
My first ever gig, a bit late to start but I had a sheltered upbringing. Anyway
having been a fan for years I finally saw him in concert, magical!

4) Radiohead Irving Plaza NY June 1997
After the TFC in 1997. Because I got there late I ended up in the balcony
rather than near the stage but found myself facing Michael Stipe and Mike Mills
across the auditorium. Radiohead played brilliantly and it was my first hear of
a lot of their newer material but visually I had other distractions.:)

5) The Eels Shephards Bush Empire 1997
My only live concert by this band and they were brilliant. Additionally they
were supported by Teenage Fanclub who were also fantastic. Unfortunately the
Eels cancelled the last show of theirs I had tickets to in order to appear on
TV.

okay - everything she wrote (except for andy, the boot, and meeting neil
finn) is exactly how great he was in san juan capistrano. except grant lee
phillips played with him - and they did a duet of "honey don't think." drool
at how good this was. as noted, this would have been my #4 but i didn't want
to go on too long. neil! neil! he is just mr. stage presence, y'know? he did
"message to my girl" at my show, too (also right up front) - that is such a
beautiful song. wow. what i'd give to see him play with r.e.m - playing both
of their songs. triple drool.

Well i've never seen REM play live, so these will have to do

1) Crowded House ( Vredenburg,Utrecht ). A really beautiful and relaxed
atmosphere.Vredenburg is an absolute brilliant concert hall, that gives every
concert i've seen there a special feel.

2) The Cure ( Ahoy,Rotterdam). 3 hours of great music and again great
atmosphere.

3) The Chemical Brothers ( Lowlands festival'97 ). Pure energy !

4) Marilyn Manson ( Pinkpop festival'97 ). I had only heard of them by name when
i saw them play and it absolutely blew me away. It had so much intensity and
emotion it feld (sp?) like everything i was feeling and thinking in my live at
that point was being condensed at projected at the stage and coming right back
at me (does this make sense ?)

5)Beastie Boys ( Lowland festifal'98 ). Lot of energy, to much crowdsurfing
though.

So Teenage Fanclub can cut it live then? Much as I love them on record, the
only time I saw them on stage, fourth on the bill to the Beautiful South,
they were seriously disappointing. Mind you, they were playing a great big
stadium with a set full of unfamiliar material (it was the week Ain't That
Enough came out, and they played a lot of Songs from Northern Britain).

Funnily enough I saw Eels supporting Pulp last month (or was it the month
before?)

Top Three:

(All of these are in Dallas, BTW)

1) Neil Finn, Deep Ellum Live, 8/22/98 -- I never thought I'd see him live
after the House broke up...and then he went solo. We were right up in front of
the stage, and the energy was incredible. Neil even improved a "song" of sorts
after something my friend said to him. Every song was right-on gorgeous, and
he played a lot of my faves, like "Message to my Girl" and "Suffer Never".
Andy can testify to my excitement -- he's heard the boot. :) And I met him
after the show!

2) R.E.M., Reunion Arena, 9/15/95 -- Wow. Wow wow wow. That's all that can
be said. Michael was doped-up post hernia and in a VERY talkative mood --
after chatting with an audience member whose last name he thought was "Stipe",
he looked up and said, "I forgot --I'm supposed to be entertaining all of you."
Great mix of songs, 5 new (at the time) tunes, and my all-time fave -- "So.
Central Rain". I literally wept, I was so floored that they played it. AND
that was the one where MTV broadcasted the first 3 songs, so I have a video
souvenir! I'd loove to have a boot of the whole show, though...

3) Counting Crows, Dallas Music Complex, 1/25/97 -- Duritz was slightly out of
it -- he was probably doped up, too, since he had hurt his leg a few shows
earlier -- but gave a great performance, including a chilling 15-minute
rendition of "Round Here". They gave a new spin to a lot of their old songs,
and played "Mr. Jones" for the first time in years, I believe. We drove from
Shreveport and met up in Dallas with some of our friends from Oklahoma, and it
was great to all be together again and share the music.

Thanks for listening,
Angie

It was last month.

Eels are playing here in Los Angeles on my birthday. I'm going to treat myself
to that concert.. I saw them open for lush back in '96 (Novocaine for The Soul
was just getting popular, but I hadn't even heard it, nor had I heard of the
band, at the time) and they were really good. I've wanted to see them on each
subsequent tour here, but time hasn't always been a friend of mine.

Any other questions?

1) Radiohead, 9.30 Club, Washington DC August 1997... I've seen the 'head twice
since then and not even they can come close to bettering this show. I doubt I
will ever see a better concert... and if I do, damn that's gonna be a good one!
I'm *still* after all this time, speechless from this show.

2) Pulp, Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC June 1998... My 6th (and probably last) Pulp
concert (I don't have high hopes of them ever coming back to the states and
it's not likely I'll be able to get back to Europe in a long long time). I
didn't think I'd be able to enjoy another concert of their's after Russell
left..but I was wrong. The show went off without any surprises, but the energy
was just unbelievable! It proved to me something I'd known for a while already,
Jarvis is the best performer there is.

3) Oasis, Fox Theatre, Atlanta Feb. 1998.. I've never been to a bad Oasis
concert.. so what makes this the best of the 4? Noel's acoustic countrified
version of the Beatles' "Help" and a thoroughly outstanding version of
Cigarettes & Alcohol.

4) Blur, Clutch Cargo's, Detroit June 1997.. highlight - Damon forgetting to
come in on cue during an ultra fast rendition of "Coping".. I think my friend
and I were the only ones in the crowd who noticed the mistake.. made all the
better by bassist Alex James noticing and laughing at Damon!

5) tie...
(a) B-52's, Shoreline Ampitheatre, San Jose CA August 1998--every time I think
of this concert, the muscles in my body start to hurt.. never have I done so
much dancing in 90 minutes time than I did at this show.
(b) They Might Be Giants, Trax, Charlottesville VA October 1993..very first
concert I ever went to. I wasn't much of a fan at the time, but this show
converted me.. they're so energetic and funny, you can't help but to fall in
love after you see them. The fact that those of us in the front row got to
pound on Linnell's accordian only added to the whole thing :)

rounding out my top 10
-R.E.M., Nissan Pavillion, Bristow VA October 1995.. they played Fall On
Me..'nuff said!
-Placebo, The Whisky, Los Angeles December 1998
-Blur, Black Cat, Washington DC Feb 1997
-Oasis, Patriot Center, Fairfax VA Jan 1998
-Fugazi, Washington DC July 1996 (I forget the name of the place they played,
but it was at a church basement)

Pearl Jam - July 2, 1998 Why? It was the first time they had been to St.
Louis since around 91' so I was pumped up, Murder City Devils played a decent
set and then said that Pearl Jam was just about ready. About 20 min later
all the lights go out, and I am sitting there in the darkness on the lawn
waiting. After about 10 min you hear the opeining line of "Oceans" and bam
the ligts kick on. Certain songs give me the chills up my spine, and when I
heard Ed open that song up, in the complete darkness, it was almost
spiritual. Man that was an awesome show. Later

Like Hank, I'll probably think of a bunch more as soon as I hit "send", but
here are a few off the top of my head:

1) KISS - 1979. Capital Centre - Landover, MD. My first concert ever.
I never realized that music could be so loud, huge and exciting.

2) The Rolling Stones - 12/8/81 - Capital Centre - Landover, MD.
Say what you want about the Rolling Stones now, but this show was easily
one of the best damn rock-and-roll concerts I ever got to see. We had
seats about 1/3 of the way back, 3rd row off the floor. My first brush
with greatness: I touched Mick Jagger.

3) The Grateful Dead - 9/2/88 - Capital Centre - Landover, MD. Upon reflection,
not the greatest show in the world musically, but it opened my eyes and ears
to my all-time favorite band. This show changed my life forever. I'd
never look at music the same way again. 3 months later I was on a plane to...

4) The Grateful Dead - 12/31/88 - Oakland Coliseum - Oakland, CA.
My 1st of 3 New Years Eve shows with the Dead. There ain't no place I'd
rather be. The Tom Tom Club opened. Clarence Clemons (sp?) sat in for
a few songs. My first trip to the west coast. ahhhhh....

5) The B-52's - 1/94 (I think) - 40 Watt - Athens, GA.
The "Let's get Cindy out of retirement" Tour. Seeing the B's in
a bar, in Athens, with Cindy was just incredible. All the cool REM stuff
in town was just a bonus. And speaking of REM...

6) R.E.M. - 10/24/86 - Syria Mosque - Pittsburgh, PA.
Camper Van Beethoven opened. Not my first REM show, but my favorite one.
This show is available as the "Rolling Stone" bootleg.

7) The Beastie Boys - Summer 1994 - Radio Music Hall - Washington, DC.
A benefit for Tibet. An odd afternoon show. It was over 90 degrees outside
and the place had no A/C. Well over 100 degrees inside. General admission
and the place was PACKED. Just before "Ill Communication" came out.
Incredible. Radio Music Hall is now the new 9:30 Club.

8) Black Flag - Sometime in 1984. 9:30 Club - Washington, DC.
Before the 9:30 Club moved to what used to be Radio Music Hall, it was a dark,
dirty, smelly, tiny club that used to feature the greatest bands around.
God, I miss that place. Black Flag used to play there fairly often.
I saw these guys a few times and they never
dissapointed. They were touring for "Slip it In" the first time I
caught them. One of the best punk bands ever.

9) Neil Young - 6/26/92 - Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia, MD
Just Neil - solo acoustic. Simply amazing.

10) The Allman Brothers Band - 9/4-5/98 - Fox Theater - Atlanta, GA.
2 glorious nights at the Fabulous Fox. 2nd row one night, 4ht row the next.
Lots of jamming. Very kind people. Beautiful theater. Perfect.

Oh no, I've said too much.

The B-52's released last summer a new single and a greatest hits CD (which
included 2 new songs.. the single and one other) and did an accompanying US
tour. They also rereleased the Love Shack single (for purchase) and released a
newly packaged Summer of Love single (for purchase). They are currently on a
break, but plan to do two shows in New Jersey this coming March and there are
plans I *think* to do a scaled down European tour. You can check out B's info

The only - and therefore best - erotic show I've experienced was
summer 1991in Atlanta. I went to the Clermount Lounge to see a band
called Dirt who were playing there. My friend Rick and I........

No I can't. It got really sleazy.

Hmm.
R.E.M. at Murrayfield, Edinburgh 1995.

Stereophonics in Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, October 1998.
The floor almost gave in to the mosh pit. Capacity - 1,000. Chances are there
won't be so few people around next few times I see them.

Stereophonics at T in the Park, 1998
It was the first time. It rained and I didn't notice that the rain had
thoroughly soaked me until the Stereophonics had gone.

The Charlatans (UK) at T in the Park, 1997
This was... cool. Nothing else to say, really.

Pulp at T in the Park, 1998
Caught me off guard. They were brilliant.

Worth a mention:
Finley Quaye. He was crap, but funny.
Annie Christian. Hmm.
Beastie Boys. Uhm, they should be up there. They were... cool.
Garbage. Hmm. Nice.
Kula Shaker. Hmm. A bit crappy.
Reef. I touched Gary Stringers arm.

Well the reunion show was the best one. . . but i agree the one during the olympics was an
absolute hoot. At the reunion show i was the one with the BIG belly wearing lime green

Here are mine:

1. Crowded House, Finsbury Park, London, June 94
Beautiful summers evening, they played brilliantly and I have an
excellent boot of the show, on which I'm sure I can hear myself screaming.

2. REM, Huddersfield, July 95
Amazing moment when they came on playing I Took Your Name and thinking
I've waited so long for this moment. Everything I expected and more

3. Beck, Manchester Apollo, May 97
Didn't really know what to expect but he was absolutely hilarious and
his band are just amazing - a great night out

4. Blur, Manchester G-Mex, November 95
Hot and sweaty as we were really close the to the front, full of kids,
but Damon was on top form underneath the giant hamburgers. I've never jumped
up and down so much in the space of 2 hours

5. Oasis, Maine Road Manchester, April 96
The home-coming gig. I spent 30 mins kissing the pitch and pretending to
score goals in front of the North stand but they were great - but it rained

6. Echobelly, Manchester Uni, Oct 95
Tiny venue, very very loud, but Sonia is amazing and they were at the
height o heir sadly diminished powers at this time

Cheers

Just a few that were really memorable:

R.E.M. at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, July 1984---- A tie with U2 for the
best show I ever got to witness. The band sounding tremendous cast in a
lavender light. All my favorites from "Cronic Town" to "Reckoning" and
beyond. Front row of the balcony with perfect vision and sound from the
greatest band in the world. I never got to see The Beatles or The Who in
their prime but I got to see every show R.E.M. ever did at the Fox Theater
from 1984 to 1989. Pure joy that went by far too quickly.

The Feelies---40 Watt/Athens---Last time thru with "Time for a Witness"
circa 1991 I think. They had to be one of the greatest live bands I ever
had the pleasure to witness. Brought new meaning to the term "tight but
loose". The show the night before in Atlanta at the Center Stage was
almost as great. They asked for some input from the crowd and I might
have mentioned "Dancing Barefoot". Brenda sang like an angel.

U2--The Omni in Atlanta--The Unforgettable Fire Tour, April 1985. What
can I say? God was in attendance along with myself and friends. Sold a
spare ticket to a University of Tenn. political science prof. who heard
some of his students mention that they were going to make the two and a
half hour drive from Knoxville for a band he had never even heard of.
This gentleman thought we were kidding when we sold him a fourth row
center ticket for cost. It was that kind of evening. He mentioned in a
fit of joy that he saw Jesus sitting on a monitor during "Bad". Best show
I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.

The Church---Center Stage/Atlanta--1986? Who would have thought The
Church were really punk's at heart. Other than the massive fight between
two idiots at the beginning of "An Unguarded Moment", it was fantastic.
Met a nice lady who simply couldn't have possibly worked for the I.R.S.
Could she?

The Replacement's----688---Atlanta---late 1984? Early all-ages show at
8:00p.m. I never saw anyone so messed up that early in the evening until
I attended college. I can only imagine what they were like at midnight.
Loud, fast, sloppy and really wonderful. Someone should never have
screamed out "Free Bird". Or anything by Hank Williams Sr.

Husker Du---688---Atlanta---June of 1985. God they were great. And God
were they LOUD. Why this band still isn't mentioned in the same breath
with The Beatles and R.E.M. I'll never know. Perfect "power/pop" for the
caffeine addicted.

Guadacanal Diary---anytime I ever saw them---Have they ever done a bad
show? I once ran into them at a Cracker Barrel eating breakfast somewhere
in South Carolina around 1987. Such nice people. I'm starting to sound
alot like CNN's Larry King. "And the Atlanta Braves are still the team to
beat.....".

Yo La Tengo---The Cotton Club---Atlanta---The "Fakebook" tour when they
opened for some now forgotten band. And every tour since then.

Kitchens of Distinction----The Cotton Club--Atlanta---The "Strange Free
World" tour in 1989/90? A really great band that got lost in that whole
"shoe-gazing" fixation coming out of the U.K. at the time. Ten years from
now they will still sound amazing. Just like R.E.M.

Some memorable shows I have seen, sort of chronological order:

The Monkees: Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones & Boyce/Hart songwriters, Santa Maria
High School Gymnasium, 197?, well I think I was in grade school then, my first
concert. Sat in front row and shook all of their hands.

Ricky Nelson, Santa Barbara County Fair, Santa Maria, CA, when? I know I was a
teenager (free show with admission, hey that's a bonus!) Loved the concert and
stayed for the second show to be in the front row and I got to shake his hand.

J. Geils Band, Freeze Frame Tour, Santa Barbara? CA, 1981? Anyway, U2 was the
opening act; "I will follow" was being played all the time on my favorite
radio station, thanks to new-wave/alternative loving Richard Blade, the cutting
edge DJ back then on Z93 out of San Luis Obispo, (yep college radio folks!)
before he went to LA and KROQ (Way to go Blade!). I was the only one in the
gang I went with who knew of and LOVED U2! Alas, we arrived TOO LATE TO SEE
U2 :o( ohmigod, I was crushed, but managed to have a good time anyway. After
the concert we waited and watched the J. Geils band come out, wave, and get in
their limo to make their getaway.

OT: Speaking of Richard Blade, anyone in CA remember his video show, MV3, that
came on in the late afternoon or early evening in the early 80's? He played
all the coolest new wave/alternative videos. Last year I met Richard Blade a
few times at a nightclub in Mission Viejo when I lived down in Orange County
when he was the guest DJ on KROQ night. Very nice man, received and bestowed
numerous hugs and kisses, made requests, received an authographed CD and danced
to a lot of my favorite music. Okay stop rambling already...back to the task
at hand....

Oh yeah, R.E.M. content...Z93 was the only radio station in my area that
actually played R.E.M. in 83.

R.E.M., Reconstructin Tour, Santa Barbara, CA, Arlington Theater, August 1985,
Pure heaven, I was mesmerized! This is the best band in all the land...My my my
my what can I say, I am in LOVE with this band and their unique sound. The
night went by way too fast. I remember Michael saying he thought all the stars
(little lights up in the ceiling) were cool. Peter was jumping around like he
was possessed; we were so much younger then...I miss Peter in his FFA jacket
wearing days, and Michael with his long curls...

The Replacements, San Juan Capistrano, CA, Coach House, 1986? This show was
radical, hilarious, almost out of control. I loved when they traded
instruments and tried to play coherently, they did a few wicked cover songs, I
had a great spot right in front of the stage, mini moshing breaking out all
around, man that Tommy Stinson was a cutie...another band ahead of their
time...

X, San Juan Capistrano, Coach House 198? Staked out a spot right in front of
John Doe. Scorching, they rocked! The seminal punk/rock band from LA were way
ahead of their time. I love this band...here's to Exene, John, Billy and DJ,
forever may you rock!

Duran Duran, Irvine Meadows Ampitheater, Laguna Hills, CA, Went for old times
sake, I used to be into those British cuties and their New Romantic tunes.

Rolling Stones/Guns n Roses, LA Coliseum, when??? Steel Wheels tour? Mainly
went to see Guns n Roses, Axl let his butt cheeks hang out of his pants...

The Cure, San Diego Sports Arena, CA Disintegration Tour. I was really into
the Cure at the time and was thrilled to be there. Excellent stage show..the
lights were otherworldly...

Depeche Mode, San Diego Sports Arena, Violator Tour, great show...

Social Distortion, numerous times in Orange County, they ROCK!!Love your
tattoos Mike!

U2, Anaheim Stadium, Zoo Tour. Damn, should have been on time for that show
way back in 81! (Well, I had no control as I was not the driver) Wished they
played some of their earlier songs..I love them the most...

Steel Pulse, San Juan Capistrano, Coach House, 199?, Rasta vibrations mon!

General Public, reunited, Dana Point, CA (Dave's adopted hometown) Heritage
Brew Pub, I met Ranking Roger and shook his hand and Dave Wakeling signed my
CD...

Dave Wakeling, numerous times around various venues in Orange County (his band
was called Bang and they played all the great English Beat songs! )

Brian Setzer Orchestra, Orange County Fair, Costa Mesa, CA, a few years ago..
(hey, free with admission!)

Anyone ever hear of Dread Zepplin? saw them a couple of times, the singer is
an Elvis impersonator who sings Zepplin songs with a Reggae beat, pretty
fucking hilarious!!!

Well if you made it this far, congratulations and thanks for reading my list!

Bye for now!

the best gig I've attended was the Manic Street Preachers at the Manchester
Apollo. they were 2 hrs late after doing Top of the Pops. They literately
just walked into the building, picked up their guitars and started. I've
never seen such an amazing performance before and probably won't again.

They're not very well known outside of Britain and Europe, though. They were
even dropped from their American record label not too long ago. Thankfully
though they were picked up and their album is coming out here sometime in May;
I hope I can afford to buy it then, because I really like them.

I was at both of those shows (well the 2nd of the two AB ones), Jim
and indeed they both were every bit as good as you say. Let me add a
couple more...

Phish - 05-31-90 - Georgia Theatre - Athens, GA.
This band I'd never heard of jammed so well together, I was amazed
that there werent even 200 people there.

R.E.M. - 11-13-89 Fox Theatre - Atlanta, GA
R.E.M. takes a stroll down memory lane....

This years TFC and Bridge obviously,

and let me just throw in one other great concert...

Belle & Sebastian - 10-26-98 - 40 Watt Club - Athens, GA
Simply put, a group of nice, shy people just sitting around presenting
a few pretty songs that they think you might like to hear. As easy a
musical experience as you could possibly enjoy.

I just have to know... did they do "A Lonely Jew at Christmas" from South

I threw in about a 1000 gigs that I'd been to when this kicked off
but.......

I've seen Van Morrison about ....thinks......45 times since the 'It's
too late to stop now' tour in 1973 and he's given me some wonderful,
like earthmoving heartstopping musical experiences.

In Autumn 1990, I travelled up to Hereford to see him at the Leisure
Centre there. The show was OK, nothing special. It was in a huge
gymnasium type place and Van just looked like he'd rather be somewhere
else.

I saw the show the next night at the Hippodrome in Bristol (allegedly
one of Van's favourite theatres in which to play). What a difference
from the previous night- the band was playing like their lives
depended on it, Van performed like a man possessed. He did a version
of 'She moves through the fair' that stays with me till this day.

I never noticed this thread before, but here goes now:

1. Better Than Ezra, 12/19/99, Canopy Club, Urbana
This was a radi station show and they only played an hour, but I was
amazed at how much they got the crowd going.

2. Foo Fighters, I'm not sure which one
I saw the Foo Fighters 3 times on the Colour and the Shape tour, and all
three were great. I saw them first in Milwaukee during Summerfest,
which was probably the best crowd, but the shows at the Aragon Ballroom
in Chicago and at Q101's Jamboree in Tinley Park were also incredible.

3. Pearl jam, three shows last summer (2 at Alpine Valley, one in
Chicago)
These shows were all just great, but they were seated, and I just can't
get into a show as much with seats.

4. Garbage, 11/2?/98, the Riveria, Chicago
Great music, great crowd.

I'll just mention the craziest crowd I've ever been in was the Smashing
Pumpkins free show in Minneaplois last year. It was in a vacent lot in
the middle of downtown, and there were like 100,000 people there. The
crowd was just unbelivably rough. I'll just mention (before Ben says
something) that all three SP shows I saw last year were great, but i
would have been nice to hear a bit more old material, then they would
have probably made the list.)

Wow, that would be, like, really cool. I wish I had seen Belle and
Sebastian in Chicago, but I really JUST got into them, and I probably
wouldn't have been able to find anybody to go with me, and I was
probably stuck down here anyways. Oh well, at least you've given me the
idea to go seek out some B&S bootlegs.

I'm sure you're right, but I was kind of unlucky about that. I didn't
really get into music until after they were a huge band. I live in
Chicago and they've had a few secret shows in small venues, but they are
usually 21+. And, on the last summer's US tour, most shows were in
small venues, but the three shows I saw were the only three Pumpkin
headlined shows in huge venues. Oh well, at least one was free.
