Esperanza Spalding in Concert
If esperanza is the Spanish word for hope, then bassist, vocalist and
composer Esperanza Spalding could not have been given a more fitting
name at birth. Blessed with an uncanny instrumental chops, a
multilingual voice that is part angel and part siren, the 23-year-old
prodigy turned pro might well be hope for the future of jazz and
instrumental music. Portland-bred Spalding is a graduate of the
Berklee School of Music in Boston, and now serves as their youngest
faculty member ever. She has recently released a new album, and tours
with her band nationally and internationally.

Vieux Farka Toure, from Mali, West Africa
Locos Por Juana, from Miami USA
Visit Vieux Farka Toure online: The son of the revered Malian
guitarist Ali Farka Touré, Vieux has stepped out from his late
father’s massive shadow. Ali Farka Touré proved – in case anyone ever
doubted it – that the soul of the blues could be found in West Africa.
Vieux is turning heads with a more radical idea: that those western
Saharan roots can be heard in everything from the jam band scene to
Jamaican dub.
Visit Locos Por Juana online: The two-time Grammy-nominated Miami-bsed
band received this write up in the LA Times: “Blending relaxed reggae
grooves with biting social commentary, hip-hop raps with brassy solos,
Locos Por Juana pulls listeners into a reverse Gulf Stream churning
through the Straits of Florida south to Jamaica, Venezuela and
Colombia, and over to Puerto Rico, Locos por Juana shows with every
song that it has thoroughly assimilated its multiple musical fathers,
with a Caribbean lilt and a rock-steady beat.”

Film Night. Miami Beach Cinematheque screens the dance classic The
Red Shoes.
Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger/1948/133 minutes
Moira Shearer, Anton Walbrook, Marius Goring, Robert Helpmann
Beautifully restored in 2009, the legendary work by Powell and
Pressburger is seen again in all its glory and magnificent color. The
Red Shoes is centered around a ballet performance of Hans Christian
Andersen‚s dark fairy tale. A ballerina (Moira Shearer) is torn
between her love for a ballet director (Anton Walbrook) and a composer
(Marius Goring). Impressive choreography by Robert Helpmann and
performances by the Lermontov Ballet Company.
Professional ballet dancers will be on hand to discuss the hard
personal choices their profession demands.
There is limited seating for this event, so buy your tickets in
advance!
