Jan Sebon & Chin Behilia - An evening of music from Haiti & CuraÇao
"Since the mid 1980s, when he co-founded the Haitian music, dance and
poetry group Koleksyon Kazak, Sebon, a musician, songwriter, poet,
teacher and activist, has been one of the most visible proponents of
Haitian culture in Miami."
"This Saturday he will present Peyi Mwen (My Country), a multimedia
music piece that is his most ambitious artistic effort. Although Sebon
has been part of numerous other performances, including the 1997
percussion work Drummin' and Teo Castellanos' hip-hop theater piece
Scratch & Burn, this will be his first major solo piece. It will
occupy half of an evening called Caribbean Crossroads, which he shares
with the Curacao songwriter Chin Behilia. " Jordan Levin Miami Herald

Sufi musicians - Arsalaan Doug Fay (above, lf) playing the nay flute

Babylon Circus & Roottz Underground part of the TRANS ATLANTIC
FESTIVAL
Rootz Underground - Revolution reggae music - edgy, raw, natural,
roots... That is the sound of Rootz Underground, formed in Kingston in
2000. The band played live for five years before recording their first
CD, and soon became the most popular roots band in Jamaica.
Roots reggae is loved around in all parts of the world. Yet in
Jamaica, it is the sound of dancehall one hears most. Now the younger
generation has decided to take up their "arms" and come as warriors
with words, sound and power to hip clubs in Kingston and subsequently
to radio, TV and festival stages outside their island of Jamrock. The
band members of Rootz Underground have been schooled in the
institutions of higher learning and mentored by present-day musicians
and producers in Jamaica. Their signature sound is inspired both Bob
Marley's contemporaries in '70's traditional rock as well as modern
giants in pop music. Like the founders of reggae and their offspring
who fuse elements of traditional reggae and ska, R&B, Jazz, Latin,
rock and then punk rock, Rootz Underground uses elements of
revolutionary Rasta-influenced reggae, trance, rock, Jazz, and dub to
forge a modern reggae rock sound. Reggae afficionados, critics,
promoters and DJ's alike concur that Rootz Underground is a group that
can make an impact as large as their predecessors in ensemble reggae
recording and song writing, inviting comparisons to bands such as
Midnite, Steel Pulse, Black Uhuru, Third World, and the legendary
Wailers
Babylon Circus - French ska-punk chansons under the big top? What else
could something called Babylon Circus sound like? But even that
doesn't begin to capture the exhilarating spectacle, more infatuating
than rock, more rocking than the circus. The 11-member band from Lyon,
France is loved for their multilingual chicanery, improvised comedy,
and unrelenting energy. Their epic musical chops create a power on
stage, sweeping everyone off their feet with a unique sonic experience
that explodes straight into the magical and incandescent. MC LANCE-O &

A year before the assassination of RFK & MLK, the turbulent 60's were
brought to life in 1967 with the musical HAIR at New York's Public
Theatre. After a year off-Broadway the show surprised many with a move
to Broadway. Protesting another unpopular war with nudity, foul
language and flower children as the protagonists, the show continued
its phenomenal popular appeal playing to SRO crowds nightly (and
matinees too!) before being launched around the globe.
To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of "Hair's" debut on Broadway,
Cinema Paradiso will play host to a special screening of the 1979
musical film "Hair" directed by Milos Foreman.
The evening starts at 6:30pm with a "Love-In" at the Paradiso Patio
Courtyard. Special guest Sheena Spirit, an actress from the film will
perform at the "Love-In." Incense will fill the air, sample
Vegetarian Cuisine from Sublime, get your face painted, put flowers in
your hair, or just groove out to great tunes from the 1960's!
Admission is FREE with your item donation to Broward Partnership For
the Homeless, Inc.!

Lanzallamas
Lanzallamas Monofonica is a 7 piece ensemble charged with melodic fire
and global rhythmical chemistry. The palette consists of a wide array
of percussive instruments such as the cajon, steel pan, tumbas,
timbalitos, Afro-Brazilian hand percussion and drumset. Elegant layers
of acoustic guitar, cuatro, violin, and piano complement and enrich
the sonic concept, with the heartbeat of the bass and breath of the
flugle horn to deliver a very unique sound. Simple and memorable
melodies are brought to life within the lyrics, focused on unity and
love, are presented in multiple languages including Spanish, English,
Portuguese and Serbian. The mission is clear; to create music of a
"Monophonic Essence" - the one sound that encompasses all. Lanzallamas
Monofonica is a band of substance with a skin of upbeat, appealing
colors for an audience as diverse as the group's members.
