HOUSTON'S 15TH ANNUAL BOB MARLEY FESTIVAL
Houston, TX, Jan. 1, 2000 -- The second weekend in March marks
the beginning of the 10th Annual Bob Marley Festival Tour.
Starting in Houston, this tour travels to approximately twenty
cities each year spreading Bob Marley's message of peace, unity
and one love. Over the last 10 years, the Tour has visited
45 cities in the United States and abroad making it the longest
annually touring festival in the world.
The Tour will appear in Houston on Saturday and Sunday, March
11-12 at Eleanor Tinsley Park (formerly known as Buffalo Bayou
Park). Located just West of Downtown Houston between Allen
Parkway and Memorial Drive, the Park is accessible from both
streets. Music begins on two stages at Noon and ends at 10:00 PM
on both days.
"Exodus" the theme of this year's Tour was taken from the album
of the same name. It reflects Marley's belief in an "Exodus"
towards the promise of a new way of life. During the coming
year, as we move towards a new millenium, we find Marley's music
reaching a new generation, calling them away from
self-destruction and cynicism to higher cultural and spiritual
levels. The visual interpretation of the "Exodus" theme
becomes the logo used in the Tour's posters, flyers, T-shirts and
the stage's backdrop. This year's Tour will also pay a special
tribute to women's achievements in life and on-stage (see
performer list).
Bob Marley, born 55 years ago Feb. 6, was probably the most
influential songwriter of the 20th century. "My music will live
forever," he predicted in 1975. Now, "Time Magazine" has picked
"Exodus" as its album of the century, while the British
Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has chosen the song "One Love" as
its song of the century.
After the death of Bob Marley in 1981, celebrations started
around the world to honor his memory. According to Tour founder
Sirron Kyles "I wanted the Tour to celebrate not only reggae and
worldbeat music, but the other things that were important to Bob
Marley. This list includes: cultural and spiritual unity, world
peace, natural foods and the environment." With the support Bob
Marley Music, Inc., the Marley Family's Foundation, the Annual
Bob Marley Festival Tour is working to unite all of these
celebrations under one umbrella.
In 1991 the Festival began its tradition of asking the public for
donations of food for nonprofit organizations. Over the last 10
years, this tradition has generated over $200,000 in cash and
over 100,000 pounds of food, school supplies and books for these
organizations. The Tour's performers include not only reggae
bands but also dance troupes, jugglers, and poetry readings.
Children will enjoy our Playscape area featuring games, rides and
Native American storytellers. As in previous years, the Tour
will feature Caribbean, African, and Third World arts and crafts
along with some of the best foods from these regions. Many of
these vendors travel from city to city with the Tour.
The Tour features performances by the next generation of reggae
and world beat music superstars. A core group of 25 acts perform
in most of the cities on the Tour with some variations. In
addition, local bands are recruited to perform in each of the
cities. This year we are saluting women and featuring many of
the upcoming reggae and worldbeat female acts. The core group of
artists slated to perform this year includes:
