They were an 80s reggae band from UK.
The CD you have is culled from their first two albums which were released in
the US on Alligator

They also released a double album Six Plus One which is probably fairly rare
today and is not on CD AFAIK.

Some of the members reformed as KE Black Slate and released a CD I haven't
heard.

The Black Slate album was on a tape someone made for me in the early 80's. I
never knew anything about the album or group, or even the name of the
album...however the tape has always been a favorite of mine. Does anyone know if
the CD of "Rasta Festival" is available, I recogonize the song list from below.
Interesting...never seen kali spelled collie.

I actually saw them play early last year at Chat's Palace In London last
year. Sadly due to poor advertising and a memory challenged general
public, only handful turned up to see the event.

I must admit I struggled to re-activate my memory cells, but they were
sufficiently jogged with the track Amigo which was a UK top ten hit back in
the late seventies early eighties. They still didn't disappoint and
played some excellent roots reggae.

Sorry but that's about the sum of my knowledge!

Yep, reggae from London. Their first single (I think) was quite a heavy
outing on their own label, Slate, called "Sticks Man", KG004 released in
1976. They signed to Ensign Records (started by a great funk DJ, Chris
Hill) and deteriorated since then.

"Amigo" is definitely weak compared to "Sticks Man"

In may 1985 Black Slate was backing Sugar Minott for a French Show and I must
say that it was very good.

Yea,

Sticksman is definitely the tune to go for , the 7" cut is MUCH better
than the 12" as well.

Yes I agree after digging deep and comming up with Sticksman unplayed for
years it is quite a solid tune, even though at the time it was cashing in on
the the popular street slang of the day, there was a complete sticksman style
who can remember that ?
