I realize that most Reggae artists are underrated/underappreciated (especially
by certain music industries).....

Anyone care to mention a few of their "Reggae favorites" who haven't seen a big
enough "Big Up" as of yet?

Here's my top 5:

1) Admiral Tibet
2) Vivian Jones
3) Keith Poppin
4) Ras Michael
5) Coco Tea

Most under-rated ?

Jamaican musicians, REAL Jamaicans.

Any artist that the white syndicate doesn't like.
Their charts and their awards are one big scandalous fraud,
and for so very long.

Here at rmr the most underrated artist is Bob Marley
people think he's just another reggae artist
Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer are underrated also

if you mean obscure artists worthy of more attention I'd name

Benjamin Zephaniah
Ijahman

it might be a different category, but i listened to a lot, lot more reggae
than any of my friends (who listen to more reggae than most people) and I
hadn't heard of Garnet Silk until i started reading RMR 2-3 years ago. He
has had retrospective and tribute albums, but I still don't think he has
been exposed at a level proportionate to what his talents were.

Yes, Winston Jarrett is a good choice...based on what my friends told me a few
years ago at SNWMF...At that time, you were forced to make a choice between
Prince Buster or Jarrett, being on two different stages at the same time...I
chose Buster but all my friends who came back from the Jarrett performance said
it was awesome.

Pablo Moses is very underrated as well.

I think, in reggae in general and possibly also in rmr, Bob Marley is
overrated, to some extent even at the expense of Peter Tosh and Bunny
Wailer. But please don't forget that Bob Marley may have been crucial
in bringing reggae to the world, but had already lost some of his JA
audience to dancehall (e.g. Yellowman) when he was still alive.

Take care,

because I "discovered" Earl Sixteen just recently?)

AGREED ! without his breakthorugh, would there have been a wave of new roots &
culture artists and guys who changed paths, like buju, luciano, capleton, who
all are more famous than garnett ?
not sure.
as for under-rated singers, here are a few : tibbet (pretty obvious), uton
green, peter hunnigale, lloyd brown, sylvia tella, dawna lee (and several other
UK singers, basically because they are not yardies, i guess), paul elliott,
osmond collins,ARCHIE WONDER, iya shanti, twiggy, nadine sutherland,
chico(well, he's a sing-jay).
dj's now : lui lepke, early b, prez brown, degree
from other periods, i'd say the kingstonians, bruce ruffin, carl dawkins, roy
shirley, lloyd charmers, prince lincoln, the in crowd...so many !
sugar minnott is also one, in a way, though his complaining about his lack of
recognition , on stage can get a little tedious.
in a way, justin hinds is also very underrated, given the very limited number
of lame tunes he's ever recorded (if one !), same for desmond dekker, who is
extremely neglected outside of the UK and out of the ska/skinhead scenes.
when coming to the ska scene, there are heaps of underrated bands, for the
obvious fact that most of this ng people are from the US, i'll only mention
Pressure Cooker (boston) and the Slackers (ny, who are as brilliant live as
they are in the studio, check them if you ever have the opportunity, even more
so if they play with glen adams).
come to think of it, there are lots of artists who will remain below the cult
status just because they don't sing in patwa or english, but that's another
matter.
basically, i guess reggae music (and the connected musical genres) will remain
a land where there are many more great artists than what the bigger names would
suggest.
actually, even a guy like wayne wonder, who remained a dark horse for most of
his career, is now able to reap some well-deserved recognition abroad, though
his new album can't compare with his Da Vibe album.

I love Terry Ganzie's gunman/western style lyrics..."When The Sun Goes Down"
"Murder" "Nuff Reward" "Welcome The Outlaw" "Texas Ride" "Wanted Outlaw"...and
then it seemed he had this transistion into cultural lyrics with tunes like "So
Long" and some other Nyabinghi type shit and then he went totally downhill
recording just terrible tunes like "Water"...and now he's a born again...which
unfortunately equals crappy music.
