If you know and enjoy the track 'Underground Roots' on Scratch's LP
"Scratch the Super Ape" you may be interested to hear that Blacker Dread
has just released six vocals on a new lick of this rhythm.
As well as running the UK label/shop, Blacker Dread was for a long time
associate of UK sound Sir Coxsone Outernational Hi-Fi. That sound system
in the mid-seventies had a dubplate of the rhythm that surfaced in 1976
on "Scratch The Super Ape". The vocal - "(From) Creation" was by Clive
Hylton, who also sang "Judgement Day" for Perry around this time. A lot
of people thought it was by Junior Byles....anyway, it never came out on
Upsetter; it was only on Coxsone's dubplate. Around 1984 Coxsone
released a Don Carlos version of the song, over a recut of the rhythm on
S.C.O.M 12".

Now Blacker Dread has released six vocals on a new Mafia & Fluxy lick of
the rhythm. Titles are:

1. Rastaman / Everton Blender
2. Borrowed Time / Sandeno

and then a Blacker Dread meets Black Uhuru excursion on the version:

3. Be Yourself / Mykal Rose
4. Jah Messengers / Junior Reid
5. From Creation / Don Carlos
(this is Don Carlos' 1984 vocal dropped on to the 1998 rhythm)

Titles 1-4 have "Creation Dubwise" by Mafia, Fluxy and Dean Fraser as
the b-side; title 5, the Don Carlos 84/98 combination, is in fact the
b-side. The A-side has Patrick 'Colour Red ' Hylton himself revisiting
his original song twenty-four years after he first voiced it at Black
Ark. Roots for the millenium, well seasoned....!!

Blacker Dread recently released another roots oriented riddim called
"Sweeney".

Babylon Mission Fall / Anthony B
Don't Wanna Be(No Gangster) / Frankie Paul
Mr.Pressure Man / Freddie McGregor
John Law / Junior Reid

These tunes on the same "Sweeney" riddim are very good , too!!

Hi Steve,

Just to clarify, Blacker Dread has produced and released these as singles?
You mentioned six new vocals but only list 5; what's the 6th ??

I am in the USA, can these be gotten at one of the bigger UK mail order
houses, e.g. dub vendor ??

Thanks for info

There are six vocals - the Don Carlos and Patrick Hylton cuts are
back-to-back on 45. The other four are backed by the same dub on each
45. They are definitely available from Blacker Dread (phone number
already given) - I don't know if Dub Vendor have them, since today is a
bank holiday in UK and I can't check this. I will let you know later
this week...
