Brendan O'Hara and The Humble Ones are a power trio in perpetual
motion. Since their formation the Humble Ones and their driven singer/
songwriter have redefined modern Bebop as an all original blend of
jazzy-blue-folk-pop with a hip-drop flavour. Which means it's jazzy
but not jazz, it's soulful but not blues, it's conscious but not folk,
and pop- in a party kind of way. If you haven't tried the hip-drop you
should, you're bound to like it.

" MISS LOU" CELEBRATION FOR S. FLORIDA
The second ANNUAL COMMUNITY CULTURAL TRIBUTE and SCHOLARSHIP
FUNDRAISER honoring the life and legacy of the late Hon. Louise
Bennett-Coverley, O.M., O.J. Under the patronage of Jamaica's Consul
General, Mr. C. P. Ricardo Allicock, the event will again observe Miss
Lou's Birthday (Sept. 7), through song, dance and drama in
commemoration of her work. The proceeds from this event will fund the
" Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley Memorial Scholarship", which is
tenable at the "Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts"
in Kingston. At the initiation of the annual scholarship program,
two students from the School of Drama at that Institution, were
the recipients of the first scholarships, presented in November,
2006. As the program continues, scholarships will be rotated
through the Schools of the Performing Arts, of the Edna Manley
College.
According to Mrs. Norma Darby, Director of the Florida-based folklore
group, the Jamaican Folk Revue, Miss Lou, throughout her life and
career, made immeasurable contributions to Jamaica's cultural
development and left a legacy, which has given to all, a sense of
dignity, authenticity and pride, in our heritage and culture.
As she encouraged the community to join in celebrating the legacy of
the late Louise Bennett-Coverley, Mrs. Darby spoke of the variety of
local South Florida performers participating in what she described as
an entertaining,"belly-full of culture", evening. Some of these
artistes include dub poet, Malachi Smith, Ms. Jeanne Powell
(South Florida's Miss Lou), Sierra Norwood Baptist Church "Ring Ding"
children's choir, Ms. Sophie Nicholson, Tallawah Mento Band, poet
"Ms. Ivy" Armstrong, Body Nation Dance Theatre and the Jamaican Folk
Revue, among others.
The Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley, (Miss Lou as she was affectionately
called) died in July last year, at age 86, in Toronto, Canada where
she had resided for more than a decade.
Described as Jamaica's cultural icon, Miss Lou accomplished an
illustrious career as poet, playwright, comedienne, lyricist and
actor. She was also the recipient of several international and
national awards and accolades throughout her career.

WEDNESDAYS NICE! Grimy Styles (Austin) & Passafire
GRIMY STYLES is a purely instrumental group determined to share their
unique interpretation of dub roots reggae with the global listening
audience. Combining traditional methods of mixology derived from King
Tubby with modern techniques used in present day engineering, grimy
styles produces a live presence unprecedented in dub music. Founded as
a trio in 2001, Grimy Styles has continued to mix the beautiful with
the absurd presenting a fresh interpretation of the genres that has
fostered each individual's growth and development. Presently
performing as a quartet, grimy styles combines global influences such
as Astor Piazolla, J.S. Bach, Fela Kuti, and Django Reinhardt with the
dub precedent in the style of King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, and
Scientist. Strong melodic and thematic overtones create a full and
unique panorama of sound leaving few desires among the listening
audience for lyrical accompaniment. Heavy dynamic and syncopated beats
emerge from a driving ryhthm section coupled with live on-stage mixing
and signal processing. A form of music is created that is solely upon
the interpretation of the audience; often dance-oriented yet still
caters to the introspective listener. Grimy Styles has shared the
stage with acts such as Lee "Scratch" Perry, Thomas Mapfumo, the
Skatalites, Bernie Worrell, Rocker T, Easy Star All Stars and more.
Aside from the grimy project, members compile their talents with
Stephen "Gibbo" Gibbs out of Kingston Jamaica building riddims for
artists such as Capleton, Luciano, I-Wayne, and Ranaco.

MARCUS GARVEY PHOTO & ART EXHIBITION, Month of August
The life and times of Jamaican National Hero Marcus Garvey are
featured in a unique photo and art exhibition, which is now on display
at
The Marcus Garvey Photo and Art Exhibition was compiled and produced
by the Rootz Foundation Inc. as part of its on-going cultural
enrichment and public education program, and will be on display at the
South Regional BCC library all month long during August. The exhibit
can be viewed by the public seven days a week during the library's
regularly scheduled opening hours: Mon - Thurss, 7.30am - 9.30pm;
Fridays, 7.30am - 4pm; Sat, 9am - 5pm; and Sun 1pm - 5pm.
The display of a wide variety of photographs, pictures, posters,
artwork, articles and selected quotes, includes a Marcus Garvey
timeline chart and a bibliography with a listing of a number of books
by and about the Jamaican-born Pan-African Hero.
The artwork on display was contributed by veteran Garveyite and
accomplished artist/art teacher, Charles Mills; and also by the
acclaimed master of the Black Art Nouveaux genre, Elgo, whose
illustrations can be found in the book A Rastafari View of Marcus
Mosiah Garvey by multimedia journalist I. Jabulani Tafari.
The photo & art exhibit opened on August 1st, 2007, in tribute to the
founding of the Universal Negro Improvement Association -the UNIA- by
Marcus Garvey ninety-three years ago on August 1st, 1914. As well as
to commemorate the anniversary of Emancipation Day, August 1st, 1834,
the day when Africans enslaved in the so-called British West Indies
were set free by Queen Victoria.
This is a month-long Garvey exhibition at the South Regional BCC
