Hopefully someone can help me out. Some friends are trying to locate
the singer and corect title of this song. All they can tell me is
the line "one cent, five cent, ten cent, dollar" and that they
believe it's soca music. As there is no soca newgroup, I thought
I'd try here. If you can give the CD title and label, that would
be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Alex Duncan from St. Kits who is the very talented and versatile lead
singer of Jumbalassy out of Seattle covers the tune you refer to in a
live recording from Jumbalassy's CD "Warning: Live Jumbies!" I believe
they use the title "Dollar Whine" but they do not list anyother info re:
the tune. IU believe that it's an old island classic that's been
covered by many artists. Jumbalassy has been the top Reggae-World Beat
band for the last 3-4 years up in the Pacific Northwest. Check out
their homepage at:

Hope this info helps---

years ago.

I saw several replys to the original question. As fas as I know Lisa's
answer is the right one. I think the year (1991) was correct, too.
The credits to Colin Lucas... a great song, by the way!

You're right. Anyhow there have been several debates in JA if the
motion,
the title of the song refers to, should be called "whining" or "wining"
or even something else. Don't know which one is correct, but I think
C. Lucas' hit is called "Dollar Wine" as you said.

Well, I must say I don't know too much about soca. I sent your article
to Mika Jansson, a good friend of mine, who is the unofficial soca guru
of Finland. :-)

1. It is entitled "Dollar Wine."
2. It was originally performed and recorded by a band called
Taxi, of which Colin Lucas was the lead singer at the time.
3. It is soca, it is from Trinidad & Tobago, it has nothing to do
with Jamaica, other than being popular there.
4. There is really no debate about the "wine," it is a wine just
like the "go-go wine," the "wine and go dung," "whinin skill"
"don't wine," and a million other soca and reggae songs about
wining, which is a general term in most West Indian dialects
which refers to dancing in kind of groovy and sexy manner,
with a lot of hip gyrations.
