The song you are describing sounds like "Hello, Ma Baby." The chorus begins:

Hello ma baby
Hello my darling
Hello my ragtime gal....

It was written by Joseph E. Howard and his wife, Ida Emerson, in 1899 and
described the then-novel pastime of talking to one's sweetheart over the
telephone. The song was a hit early in this century.

Relevant Music Trivia: In the Mel Brooks comedy "Spaceballs," the
extraterrestrial creature that emerges from somebody's stomach at the end of
the movie (a la "Alien") sings two choruses of "Hello Ma Baby" and then
expires.

Hope this helps,

Are you sure the alien expires? I though he (she?) strutted off through
the serving hatch at the end of the counter.
