The musical "Ragtime" is at the Shubert theater is Los Angeles. Our
local radio stations are saturated with advertisements to see the show.
The music they play in the ads is enticing. It has convinced me to go
and see it. The music is beautiful. However, the music does not sound
like ragtime! Is there any ragtime in "Ragtime?"

It has come to my attention that Jennifer Jones wrote in article
<5vf5t8$1r9i$1...@newssvr03-int.news.prodigy.com>:

I can't answer *that* question, Jennifer, but to possibly reduce
confusion, I can point out that the novel "Ragtime" was not about the
ragtime music, but about the ragtime era of the 1910s. I don't know
that much about the score for the musical, but I suspect it is all
modern composition, and I haven't heard any ragtime in the commercials
for the production.

Yep,

I've come to the same conclusion. In the case of the musical, ragtime
refers to a period in American history, and not necessarily the music.

I've heard a few excerpts & there is SOME ragtime, but the score seems
to be mostly modern Bway (a la LES MIS).
Judging by the novel, one of the main characters is a ragtime pianist
...
Coalhouse Walker (= Michael Kohlhass from about a century earlier).

The Shubert Theater in Los Angeles contacted the
Monterey Bay Ragtime Festival last week asking to
learn more about ragtime. It seems that they only
recently learned that there are ragtime festivals
around the U.S. and wanted to learn more.

Perhaps the "Ragtime Movement" has a communication
problem getting the word out to the rest of the world?

By the way, there are still rooms available in the Watsonville
area and the fifth-annual 1997 Monterey Bay Ragtime Festival (9/26-28)
promises to be the best one we've put on yet!
