It has come to my attention that Jennifer Jones wrote in article
<5vf5t8$1r9i$1...@newssvr03-int.news.prodigy.com>:
I can't answer *that* question, Jennifer, but to possibly reduce
confusion, I can point out that the novel "Ragtime" was not about the
ragtime music, but about the ragtime era of the 1910s. I don't know
that much about the score for the musical, but I suspect it is all
modern composition, and I haven't heard any ragtime in the commercials
for the production.

I've come to the same conclusion. In the case of the musical, ragtime
refers to a period in American history, and not necessarily the music.
I've heard a few excerpts & there is SOME ragtime, but the score seems
to be mostly modern Bway (a la LES MIS).
Judging by the novel, one of the main characters is a ragtime pianist
...
Coalhouse Walker (= Michael Kohlhass from about a century earlier).
Ed Berlin
Perhaps the "Ragtime Movement" has a communication
problem getting the word out to the rest of the world?
By the way, there are still rooms available in the Watsonville
area and the fifth-annual 1997 Monterey Bay Ragtime Festival (9/26-28)
promises to be the best one we've put on yet!
