I guess if I *HAD* to be pigeonholed about what type of music I like, it

Thanks for any answers.

That's from their last album Space Revolver. Between two albums that I
have and heard, SR and Flower Powers, I prefer SR. Grab it.

_Retropolis_ is decent. I wouldn't go buying a ton of Flower Kings
CDs, because a number of them fail to distinguish themselves from the
rest (plus there's lots better stuff out there). If you want a couple,
_Retropolis_ and _Space Revolver_ would do you fine.

That song is from the album _Space Revolver_, which is about as good a
starting place for the band as any. But really, their albums are all
quite similar, so if you like (or dislike) one you will probably like
(or dislike) all the others. That said, however, their double albums
tend to be terribly padded with substandard material and thus I wouldn't
recommend starting with either of those.

I find their material pretty inconsistent, but they have some damn
fine instrumentals, some of which can be found on _Retropolis_ (the
only one of theirs I actually own). Their most recent studio release,
_Space Revolver_, seems to be well-favored by Flower Kings fans, but I
haven't heard it. A lot of people seem to like _Stardust We Are_, but
because that one's a double-cd, you may not want to make the
investment in that one before you're sure you really dig the band.

All of the Flower Kings CD I've heard seem to have the same basic sound, retro-
seventies prog rock with occasional bits of fusion or 60s-70s pop, they only
really differ in terms of quality. I would definitely recommend Space Revolver
as a starting point, it has IMO the strongest songwriting, best production, and
is a little more adventurous than their other material. If you like that, I
think you would judging by your other tastes, go on to Stardust We Are. Good
luck.

There's a slightly older compilation out called "Scanning the Greenhouse",
to which I had a fairly favorable reaction. Might not be a bad thing to
try, since it's a greatest-hits kind of thing.
Avoid "Flower Power".

I respectfully disagree. You will probably like Space Revolver, because I Am
The Sun is on it, but I was really disappointed in the whole "complexity"
thing. I think this is their most formulated album to date and not that
complex.
But do I like it.... yes. Just not as much.
If you like that, I

I think Stardust is a masterpiece, even if it is not 100% super prog. I really
enjoy this album. It is now available pretty cheaply even though it is a two
disc set if you get it at CD now or Amazon.
Either way, if you find that you like their material, you will probably end up
getting all of it.

Andy (and others); thanks for the ideas and hints. I'm gonna see if I can
pick up Space Revolver after work on Friday. I don't take the 'don't start'
advice too seriously. After all, I'm into music for enjoyment :) I can't
even tell you why I like all of the music that I do, and I really doubt
that anyone could either. Some of the music I like is simple; some is
complex. But on some level I like it, even if I can't tell someone else
precisely why.
Van Der Graaf Generator for instance; about 12 years ago, I wandered into a
second hand record shop, saw 'Still Life' and bought it because I knew what
a VDGG was. Found I liked it. Bought 'The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each
Other', And the others quite quickly after that.
But, despite my lurking in this ng on and off for as long as I remember I
never picked up on the Flower Kings (I dunno, maybe I thought they were a
country band, and I'm not knocking country....it just isn't my cup of tea).
Somehow it was a post about Landberk that wound it's way into the Flower
Kings and here I am :)
Thanks again people.

My recommendation would Retropolis, second choice would be Stardust We Are.
The second disk of Stardust is fantastic! The first is not as compelling,
but still serviceable.
You can also find a couple Flower Kings cuts on the Progfest 97 compilation,
if it's still available. Also includes songs from Le Orme, Arena, Spock's
Beard, and Sinkadus. Lots of fun!
Thomas Davie <thod...@home.com> wrote

Wow, I was actually going to say that "Flower Power" is my favorite FK
album...(at least the first disk).
Back in the World of Adventures.
Retropolis.
Stardust We Are.*
Flower Power.*
Alive on Planet Earth.*
Space Revolver.
AoPE is a live album. The rest are studio releases. Albums with a * are
doubles. Also, the Japanese version of Space Revolver has a second disc of
bonus tracks. Guitarist/bandleader Roine Stolt has released a number of solo
albums, the best two being The Flower King and Hydophonia. (To avoid
confusion, I have to explain that Roine released his solo record The Flower
King and then formed the band we're discussing which he named after the
album.) FK keyboardist Tomas Bodin also released an solo album called An
Ordinary Night in My Ordinary Life. I've not heard it but it's supposed to
be excellent. There're two other FK albums, Scanning the Greenhouse and
Quebec something or other (I can't remember the exact title). I haven't
heard either but AFAIK, both are compilation albums.
In article <GHzi6.1091$TU6.1...@news1.rdc1.mb.home.com>, thod...@home.com
To each his own. I found it utterly uninspiring, and after numerous listens
found that it had left absolutely no impression on me. I didn't even find
the melodies that catchy, the way I did some of the ones on "Scanning the
Greenhouse".

I preferred it when you answered in English. I know it's not your native

I rarely agree with your opinions on SB, FK, Transatlantic, DT etc. but
always take note of your views on Europrog.

The main problem with the flower shits is that all their "songs" are
too different in style so that you can hardly recognise the band.
In 15 years and 300 albums they never played a song that remembers of
another.
In a few words: they are really too original for our poor italian
silly fans.
