Hello again,

Yes...it's true, Scott will be heading west for a show in Chicago on
Thursday, January 28th at Martyrs' 3855 N. Lincoln Ave on the north side
of the city!! The phone # over there is (773) 404-9494.

For those of you who don't know, Scott is a fiery guitarist that has
burst on to the fusion and progressive rock scenes with his "Hand Farm"
trio and "Finneus Gauge". The all instrumental "Hand Farm" trio play a
powerful blend of rock and fusion. His playing as been compared to the
likes of John Goodsall (Brand X) and Allan Holdsworth but it goes far
beyond that. Scott's style is based in fusion and is best known for his
lightning fretwork. However, upon listening to his recordings'it is
evident that he is very adept at classical, jazz and rock guitar
styles. One of his most impressive talents is his ability to seamlessly
include many of these styles within the same composition. The debut
release has gotten Scott some well deserved recognition:

"McGill's punchy guitar attack storms relentless through the entire
album. This is technical music, guitar for guitar's sake." Expose
Magazine, Setember 1997

"The Hand Farm is a serious piece of music" Alternate Views, August
1997

...and from the Fall '97 catalog of "The Laser's Edge"..."This is
blistering hot fusion somewhat similar to Allan Holdsworth's earlier
works"

...and the list goes on. Suffice to say, this should be one ripping
show!!

Also, I'm proud to announce that supporting Scott will be the Racine WI band
Kopecky. Chemistry is all-important when it comes to making music, and the
Kopecky brothers have it. In spiritual, musical, and biological terms,
Kopecky has a
special connection which makes their unique brand of progressive
instrumental rock
extraordinary. By combining Paul's hard-driving and complex drumming,
William's
serpentine fretless bass work, and Joe's kaleidoscope of guitar textures and
techniques, Kopecky creates a rich tapestry of sound to expand the mind of the
discriminating listener. With influences that run the gamut between Bach,
Yes and
Ravi Shankar, (William plays the sitar!!) Kopecky offers a far reaching
spectrum of
instrumental rock expression.

See ya at Martyrs'

Per and Dirk;

Thanks for the info. Most of the bands have some history behind them (I am
especially a big fan of Ole Lukkoye) and of course In Spe (I can't find
their other albums, though).

I'm in the process of trying to start a label dedicated to East-European new
music, and I plan to release some reissues of "prog" albums from the Bloc as
well.

I appreciate the information given greatly.

And Per, check out the group called MIZAR. I'll post a link to them soon.
A great Macedonian band.

This is a very, very interesting album, full of melody and a certain
primitive charm. It was recorded in a hotel room, in 1982-84!

Hello;

>>Autograph "I" and "II" Musea catalog

I thought they were quite aweful, myself. On par with a more "rock-n-roll"
version of Genesis. Pretty poor,
but they had some appeal in Europe.

I really liked "Typewriter in D," but I'm most interested in Erkki-Sven
Tuur's work with the band, which is on the other album. I'm looking to find
someone with those masters so I can reissue it.

>>MESS(Grunberg, Sven) "MESS" Synphonic catalog

I've got it. Spacey electronic prog. Good stuff.

>>ZGA "zgamoniums" ZNR catalog

Wonderful band from Latvia. Freeform, actually more akin to Industrial
music or RIO.

>>Arsenal "created with their own hand" ZNR catalog

Don't know 'em.

Well worth checking out. Major points for originality, though one can hear the
influences of prog's best on their sleeves.

Both well worth picking up! Originality points here!

>>MESS(Grunberg, Sven) "MESS" Synphonic catalog

Grunberg has many LPs out released on both Melodya and the East German-state
Amiga label. All need re-issue. He's been labeled "the Klaus Shultze of
Russia."

>>ZGA "zgamoniums" ZNR catalog

I have a couple of their CDs- both on ReR- _Sub Lunar Morrior_ and another
(might be the above...) 96.4% of this NG would go screaming for the door
within 5 minutes...freeform/electro-acoustic experimentations. Very nice
stuff.

Another fairly ordinary rock band. Probably the best-known Russian rock band
during their heyday.

>
> I don't know anything about those bands :(

Kinda suprised that none of the Aquarium LPs are in available on CD. They were
one of the more popular bands in Russia along with Arsenal. Aquarium's
guitarist Boris Grebenshikov even got an American LP deal (a forgettable
one-shot on Columbia that was released directly to the cut-out bins- titled
_Radio Silence_ .) Another Russian band worth mentioning is Strange Games, who
appeared on _Joanna Stingray's Red Wave-4 Underground Bands from Russia_ 2LP
comp in the late 80's and on their own LP released on Points East titled
_Leningrad_ . They played a weird mix of avant-gardeish rock and ska(!) that
scored points for originality along with being a fun listen.

You may also want to check out Sergey Kuryokhin and his Pop Mechanics ensemble
as documented on Leo Records. Their "every-type-of-music-under-the-
sun-mixed-in-a-blender-and-poured-into-your-ears" concerts were a favorite of
the Soviet academia/art crowd at the time. There's a wonderful 4CD set out on
Leo that includes some of this material along with with other superb music
that's highly reccomended for those not afraid to expand their horizons a bit.

One of the best pieces of music i've heard on the Leo label that might appeal
here is Slava Ganelin and Mika Markovich's live piece titled "Quasi Duo" off of
the _Conspiracy_ 4CD box. If Univers Zero did a "jazz" opus, it would sound
like this. Absolutely stunning!

Enough bandwidth...

Sergei was the most wonderful of musicians. A really "out-there"
personality, and perhaps the
most enigmatic musician to ever come out of Russia in my opinion. He is
sorely missed (he passed away a
couple of years ago due to a rare cancer of the heart).

And Leo Feigin of Leo Records is an excellent resource for information on
Russian free-jazz.

I wonder if there is another Russian prog band named "Arsenal" because the
album that I have is definately not ordinary rock. I just played it, and
this is how I would describe it:

One song in particular sounds Mahavishnu inspired
especially in the arpeggiated melodies.
The music in more in the Mahavishnu relaxed mode - ala
Apocalypse or McLaughlin's "Electric Guitarist".
Some occaisional and tasty rapid-fire guitar.
Some bits remind me of the instrumental parts of Genesis
circa Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering, particularly in
the keyboard work.
Keyboards are probably the most dominant instrument and
seems to be influenced by Jan Hammer circa Beck, McLaughlin,
Cobham, Bolin, and also some Tony Banks, in the vein of the 2
aforementioned Genesis albums.
It reminds me a bit of Jean-Luc Ponty's mid-to-late 70's
work as well. But, what's interesting is that the song that
reminds me of that also has a healthy dose of sitar giving
it an overall different sound. There is alot of interesting
things mixed together very well in this album.
The album is completely instrumental. This album is firmly in the
mold of late 70's early 80's fusion.

And sadly, one of the most cureable of cancers too. His performance with the
Pop Mechanics on the 80's BBC series _Comrades!_ (rebroadcast on ETV in the US)
no doubt stunned quite a few people. John Zorn made plans immediately after
viewing the series to record with him. Unfortunately, the meeting never
happened.

Indeed. His book _Russian Jazz, New Identity_ is a must read too. I got my
copy from Cadence.

To answer your other question- both the _Conspiracy_ and Sergey Kuryokhin 4CD
box sets are in print- the former in its second pressing, I think. Of course,
no Russian music collection would be complete without the 8CD _Document_ box
set either...;-)

Guess it depends on the year yours was recorded. I believe the band was (is?)
quite prolific- no idea on how many LPs they released. The one I heard was a
Melodya release from a while ago (no idea of the title), and it sounded like a
band who had picked up their licks from listening to rock music played over
Voice of America/ Radio Free Europe at the time- arena rock dreck.

It is and it isn't. It's sort of like the second Renaissance album in
that there are two different line-ups on the album, one of which is very
similar to the line-up on the preceding album and one of which isn't.
However, while the "Renaissance's First Album" line-up appeared on the
majority of "Illusion" and the other line-up on only a track or two,
with (Dawn) Dialog(ue) the situation is reversed: the "I Put the Spell
on the Fire" line-up appears on only one or two tracks, and the rest is
a completely new band. So there is some continuity, but not much.

IMO, "I Put the Spell on the Fire" is a pretty good album, while "Cry of
the Hawk" just plain stinks. It's plain old rock, not prog -- nothing
wrong with that in and of itself, but it's *bad* plain old rock, not
prog. But if you really want to hear it, I know a local used CD store
that has a copy (the one I sold them two or three years ago that they
still haven't managed to unload <g>), so let me know if you're
interested. But I don't recommend it.

Best band on that album. They reminded me a lot of later Etron Fou. Really good
stuff. That humming chorus on Paper Flowers was guaranteed to raise the hackles

I enjoyed a few of the Aquarium tunes, but along with those and the Strange

i just recieved an emailed article from a russian friend of mine that
was sent to him by a british friend of ours - i'm not sure where the
article originated, but i'd be happy to send a copy to anybody who's
interested. it's a general history of russian "prog", starting with psyche
and going into contemporary avant & prog stuff. it includes an interview
with one of the members of Auktyon. lots more groups and references in it
have not found their way into this thread.
i'd post it here, but it's quite long -
