Somebody had asked recently about Greg Stone. There is a guy, Brad Kava,
that writes a weekly article on radio in the San Jose entertainment
section, and this week he mentioned Greg Stone. The article said - well,
here, I'll let you read it for yourself.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? You can stop calling me. I found Greg Stone, of
"Stone Trek," the art-rock show that ran for 18 years on KOME and was
canceled two years ago. He's still in town, working as a producer for
"Loveline" on KOME, the great night time sex/relationship/medical-stuff
talk show that airs Sundays from 8 to 10 p.m. and Mondays through
Thursdays, 10 p.m. to midnight.

I get more calls about him than anyone else. I wish a program director
with some guts would pick him up and let him do his thing. He has
introduced more new music to this valley than almost any other DJ.

For those who seem to be continually lamenting the fact that Greg Stone is
no longer on the air, I would seriously recommend checking out the show that
John Szpara and I do every Sunday night at 9:30 on 90.5 FM KSJS, in San Jose,
which incidentally can be heard as far away as Noe Valley in SF and Castro
Valley in the East Bay (we've gotten calls and requests from both places and
they said it was coming in loud and clear).

Granted, we are not *exactly* like Greg Stone, we don't play "And You And I"
every other week and "Cinema Show" on every alternating week, and like that...
in fact that was one of my biggest gripes about Stone's show, most of the
stuff he played was stuff he'd already played a zillion times before. I wanted
to be introduced to something new every time I tuned in...there is just too
much worthwhile music out there, and Stone stubbornly ignored 99% of it.

So as a result, "Exposure" (our show) is precisely the opposite. We never
play the same song twice (well, almost never). Check out the playlists below,
which represent our first eighteen weeks or so on the air in San Jose (working
backward from last Sunday). Tune the show in sometime (and be sure and have
your tape recorder ready, because if we play it once we probably won't play
it again anytime soon!)

Same here in Montreal. There's a guy monopolizing the prog bandwidth at
CIBL, an alternative radio station, with a weekly programme that ignores most
of the good material. Difficult to propose another, better programme when the
radio managers know nothing about prog.

Worse at CISM, the University of Montreal radio station (aired anywhere in
Montreal) : they welcome you with big smiles when you ask them how to
submit a new programme proposal. Once you mention the words "progressive
rock" they blunty reply: "we don't want that music in our radio station" and they
suddenly don't have the time to talk to you anymore.

Of course, CISM use to have a prog programme, filled with neo-prog only dull
and redundent to the max material.

What these people are doing to the prog scene in general with their inept
programmes is unbelievable.

I recently discovered your radio show, and it's great! It does a
nice job of filling the prog void that's been in the Bay Area since
the demise of Greg Stone's show (I'm one of those Greg Stone
lamenters)! Thanks for posting your playlists - is there a place
where those are regularly available? (web site, here in r.m.p, ...)

It's true..."Progressive" is the eighth forbidden word....I personally
thought that Exposure would have had an easier time breaking in on many
of the stations we targeted early on - especially the listener supported
and college stations, if we had simply dropped all the 'commercial' music
like Marillion, Genesis, Yes, and like that, and then just billed ourselves
as an 'international rock show', playing only indie label stuff and imports.

When a PD sees names like Yes, Genesis, ELP, Tull, Marillion and so on, he
may have some preconcieved idea with negative overtones (old, out of fashion,
un-hip, dinosaur...). When they see names like Il Balletto Di Bronzo, Dzyan,
Anekdoten, Hinn Iszlenski Pursaflokkur and Yoshinobu Shirakawa, they don't
know what the hell it is, but it looks international, multicultural, and
all that other politically correct bullshit, and they might at least give
it a chance with an open mind.
