OK, I need a little thread to keep me amused until
my tour starts at Deer Creek. Otherwise I'm gonna
puke in anticipation. ;)

What is the worst song you've ever heard by
Phish????

Now I _love_ Phish more than any other, but I know
all of you have a song that you think sucks or
just plain pisses you off.

For me, the answer is obvious. And I hope it is
for y'all too. Strange Design. This song sucks
SOOO bad it's even funny sometimes. It belongs on
one of those 80's music commercials you see at 2
in the morning on the Discovery Channel.
I feel the flames already, but I have to say that
I think FOAM sucks for the most part. Demand
blows pretty hard core too.

fire away,
Corey

Most acapellas are cool at first, but IMO get old, especially when
on tape stead of live. I'd have to say that other than that, IMO my
least favorite PHiSH song would be Foam. I don't know what it is
about the song, but it just doesn't appeal, ya know :P I've heard
other people say this about the song too.

I really don't like Big Black Furry Creatures From Mars, or BBFCFM for
those of you in the know. Maybe I just don't get it. My wife really
doesn't like it when they do Highway to Hell. There you go, two for the

Yeah, I would agree about FOAM. The jam part can
be uplifting, but mostly it just falls flat for

I notice a lot of people choose Foam and It's Ice. I'll freely admit that
neither of these songs main theme is all that great, but the jam parts can be
incredible. Foam can get great Page solos and Trey solos and It's Ice can have
a great jam when they break it down. With that being said, these are still
my least favorite phish tunes in normal rotation just because most of their
songs have great themes and great jams. My least favorite songs of all time
would have to be Dear Mrs. Reagan, Prep School Hippie and the like. Let's face
it, there's a reason they don't play a lot of tunes off their white tape
anymore. It's really kind of unusual that they don't really write shitty songs
anymore, but still haven't composed anything as good as You Enjoy Myself since.
Some of their very best songs are really old like Mike's, Harry, Slave and all
of their shitty songs are old. You would think that they would be writing
better songs each year since they are playing better each year, but their level
of composition has not been nearly as linear as their level of playing. I

Yep, I think I've gotta agree with the both of you for the most
part. Highway to Hell doesn't do all that much for me, and I've
never really "gotten into" BBFCFM either, although I do like to
catch this one every once in a while, since there are some times
which I've heard it and they've made it REALLY fun. All in all
though, I'm never upset after a show because I didn't catch
BBFCFM. I do always like to look around me when they come into
this one after one of their slower songs, just to see all the
people who have never heard this tune before and the confused
looks upon their faces.

You've got it. Strange design is the cheesiest song by far. They do cheesy songs as a matter of
course-- such as HYHU and Cold as Ice jams-- but that cheese occurs on purpose and is tongue in
cheek. To me, SD is not only a yawner, but the lyrics make me gag. Sorry guys.

I also agree that I could stand to hear less Foam, but when I'm in the mood, I enjoy it's
unusual meter. It's funny to watch people try to clap along with Tubbs.

I like Demand.

Marcus, I would tend to agree with you in general about what you have said
about phish's compositions over the years, but on th other hand I have
discovered that all of their songs have something unique about them that
make them favorite to some people. In particular I think that foam is a
kick ass song especially since I just saw them a week ago jam it live. As
for It's Ice the song does tend to bore me after a couple of listens, but
I must add that the intro is still among my favorites because of the way
the bass plays off the guitar, also it is one of my friends favorite
songs.

gordon sharpless (pale...@philly.infi.net) had written:

| I shoot mockingbirds and feed then to my pet herring. Harpua eats the
| herring.

That would be a great Harpua narration. Poster Nutbag is walking along,
and suddenly the Famous Mockingbird swoops down and carries him away. But
then the mockingbird gets sucked into the exhaust on the big black furry
creature from Mars's spaceship, and drops Poster. Poster falls down onto
a frozen pond, slides along the ice for a while (almost running into
Prince Caspian's ship which is stuck in the ice), until his reflection is
able to pull him through into the water below, where he runs into Esther
and a lost herring. The herring was used to jumping into the tub with the
wolfman's brother, and so always had fish food sprinkled on top of the
water. Now he has to learn to feed from the bottom instead, which is all
very confusing for a simple herring. So the three of them team together
to learn how to survive, picking up a lost 119-year-old dog along the way.
Of course, the next thing you know, they win the lottery, and are all
living at the top of a really grand skyscraper, and everything's great
until an asteroid crashed into it. Nothing burned, but now the four of
them are homeless. They wander the streets, living off of roadkill
possum, until eventually a deranged traffic signal finds them and enslaves
them.

Leaving Jimmy with only a goldfish.

I love it, and ?I THINK? I have a show with it(I'm not sure, maybe

This thread is basically all opinion. There is no reoccuring song. If I

Sparkle bores me to death, live or especially on tape. I also hate
vacuum solos. They are just plain silly, in an annoying sense, and
are the antithesis of the good music Phish is known for. I also hate
any 'special guest appearance' that involves bluegrass of any kind

Oooo...yikes...first off, the vaccuum has its origins WAYYYYYY back to
the Nectar days of Phish. Of course, I need not point of the obvious
appearances of it on Junta. The fact that Fishman continues to suck
that sucker 13 years later says to me that Phish isn't afraid to hold
on to what made the band great: expect the unexpected. A Phish show
COULD be everything from Hoist and that's it. I really thing that the
newer crowd at Phish shows often doesn't realize that many of these
songs are 10 years old or more. They still sound fresh and tasty. Find
me another band that can do that as successfully as Phish.

Re: bluegrass. Of course, we're all entitled to our opinion, but
bluegrass is amazingly complicated and sophisticated music that has
roots back to the last century. The fact that Phish incorporates this
art form into their music in 1996 is a true testament to their own
smarts and good taste.

I don't really have a problem with Sparkle, but I've never been
a fan of anything on the "Hoist" album, except Scent of a Mule and DWD.
Which song on Lawn Boy did they play the vacuum on?

Yeah, it's a pretty funny song, but actually the part about "I woke up

Ignoring that last comment, Iwould have to disagree. I happen to love my
car and I do believe that anyone who spends any time in their car at all
would have to agree. Sure it's gas guzzling, blah, blah, blah, but that
doesn't take away from the individualism that alot of Heads put into or
on their cars. When I get a new show the first thing that I do is go for
a drive in the country. I can sing as loud as I want, no one can hear me
at all. The car is one of the few places that many have absolute privacy.
Besides that, Contact is a fun song that speaks truth.

easy there! let's not lash out right away. hmm...maybe the person who
wrote "it might be tongue in cheek" was being a little sarcastic at the
time. even if they weren't, there's no need to be so venomous in your
reply. and as for the little slander toward the dead, that was uncalled

"how can a brilliant band like phish attract such idiots?" gosh, i don't

Hmm, 'It's Ice,' eh? I think that's a very well structured tune, actually,
with some nicely arranged 'jams' in the middle. Pretty sweet, IMHO. Well,
just to piss people off, I've gotta give 'Guyute' the thumbs down as one
of my least favorite Phish tunes. I don't know, it just sounds like
something that could have been put out by a pompous British 'art-rock'
outfit of the 70's. Then again, NBC could've used parts of the tune as
Olympic theme songs... ;)

Notes on the first night:Solid first set as I've seen. Setlist alone is
impressive w/ bathtub, ac/dc, divided, halleys and bowie, how many second
sets could boast those songs? Ac/Dc was very well played-->A- version I'd
say.Divided & bowie were standard versions, nothing ground breaking but
good. Halleys is always a rare treat.Second set was the lull of the
entire weekend to me. SOAMelt was rocking but it was downhill from there.
Sparkle is Sparkle, Free & Coil were not impressive as well with the
entire acoustic set. it will take me awhile to get into the new songs,
they do have possibilities. The mikes Groove arrangement was interesting
and as usual it was jammed out but nothing mind blowing,I'd rate it a B
to B+ maybe. Third set was nice, Mak. was full of energy and it seemed
the 2001 was longer than usual, maybe my head was a little slower than
usual. Who knows? Dw/D had its usual loose jam that intro nicely into
NICU. The Hood was bad. I was not impressed at the least with this
version, I think they were constricted with time with the fireworks and
all but oh well. All in all it was a solid show, no huge bust-outs
(halleys was a rare treat)and it had us geared for the the final show on
tour and biggest phish show ever.

Suzy Greenberg 12:06
5:08

+---with Ben & Jerry on one verse
First set was solid. PYITE had its Landlandy in it and reba had no
whistle ending again but was solid, about 16min long. lizards got the
crowd excited as did sample. Maze was hot. 13min long and sweet. It seems
this is at its high point with the band, ever time they play it, it seems
to kick ass every time kind of like SOAMelt a few years ago. I hope they
can keep maze going for awhile.Second set was it for me. Jim was good but
got lost a little bit 12min. Then came Brother!! The crowd was very
excited and trey announced ben & jerry, they got up there and sang the
chorus and kind of shrug there shoulders like, hey we cant sing. These
are moments that i will never forget.Fluff was fine with a very hot
ending that rocked. antelope also rocked, very high enrgy stuff here.
slave was standard but good.Third set was kind of a disappointment.
wilson & frank. were nothing great in my mind. Also scent is not one of
my favorite tunes at all. I can say that i do not like the song which is
huge for me 'cause i love almost everything they do(sparkle & golgi are
others stinkers)The tweezer rocked! it was short--13min about but was
played very, very tight and really jammed hard with a vengence which
sometimes is hard to say about tweezer. the possum was good too. nothing
mind blowing. Harpua finished the tour for everyone. i was excited for my
first harpua. It was unfinished in my book but i did not care this song
is what phish is all about to me.

Each night had its ups and downs but both were solid shows. A few
rarities and well played tunes made for a good run to close the tour.
Some other notes---attendence was estimated on fri 70.000 people were
there at 6:30. sat was 80,000 inside the show & 30.000 outside. these
were given to me by the people working there so they are semi accurate.
Not bad given that 2 years i saw they in Orlando w/ about 3-5,000 people
and then the free show in UF next day. The times they are a changin' in.
Also 1 person died, supposedly of and overdose--probably herion, and only
a 2 arrests were made. And everyone was scared that they were searching
cars for beer, come on!! my friends got in both shows with no tickets,
the security was 'lax. We ran the whole weekend basically and it went
with out problems. Lets try out the government next huh?

Take it easy, man. This original thread was started by someone good
natured who was interested in getting feedback on a trivial, yet
intersting subject. No need to dump on them. If you don't like
it, don't respond. This thread has been going on for days and has
gotten many intelligent, interesting replies. It was not meant as
a knock at Phish. Lighten up.

By the way, Purple Rain, vacuum solo or not, is the worst song they do.

I guess I'll get in on this thread, too.

I have to agree that the words of Esther really bother me, and the song
itself doesn't impress me that much.
As far as contact, I like the bumpin' little piano jam on the studio version.

I guess the worst songs as far as I'm concerned are Union Federal and
Sample in a Jar.

Somewhere between blind love and the over-picky the worst Phish song is
the one you dislike the most. It's ok to dislike a song or two. Phish
won't collapse without your total undying love.

I heard Reba in the back of someone's car once & the chorus annoyed me

Hey-

Really, people, what are you thinking?? Contact isn't *really*
about a car - it's just a metaphor for a person that the narrator of the
song is in love with. Think about it (without being tooooo rude) - "your
headlights in front, your tailpipe or the skylight above you" can all be
anatomical features; it's really more of a cute little love song that
doesn't have to be about a car.

Ahh, yes. Nothing like a post like this one to bring me back into the
fold of the Phish Net (it's been a solid 5 months since I've posted).

My response to this is: relax pal, everyone is entiled to their
opinions. To say that all Phish songs are equal is readIcculus
considering many phish songs have been shelved because the band doesn't
like them. You could look at this like the glass half-empty/half-full
argument. Saying that something is their "worst" song is the same thing
as saying a song isn't quite as good as the rest.

For example, I think your post was not quite as good as some of the rest.

In other news, it's good to be back. I hope everyone enjoyed summer
tour. This was my first tour in 4 years not to be able to make any shows
:-(.

I think your list of songs you don't like would make a pretty good set
(w/o Esther) but hey to each his own. BTW I have a friend who hates
tweezer and I can understand that even though I don't mind it.
Peace
Matt

Actually, the single Nitrous Oxide really is for the most part
nothing but noise.

That friend would be me...go ahead I'm prepared to take it.
I dont Hate it... For some odd reason I cannot get into tweezer
although I do like tweezer reprise which is something I dont
understand. Dont get me wrong I LOVE a good jam but the tweezer jam
is just alittle boring for me. except when they go into other stuff
like 5/7/94.

I'm gonna put on _MY_ flame retardant clothing now.

while this is a really useful thread, and i love hearing people's
incredibly insightful
comments such as, "strange design sucks sooooo bad - it is total cheese!",
i
think everyone here is forgetting about the truly awful phish songs - i'm
talking
about weigh, tube, YEM, hood, mike's groove, harpua, mcgrupp, curtain . .
. . .
i could go on all day - talk about poor excuses for music :-)

I think their worst stuff is all the a capella stuff they do. On one hand it
is a neat way for the band to put their hands into the diversity bag, but on
the other I cannot stand a capella music. It simply does not do anything for
me.

Along those lines, does anyone else dislike the vocal jams at the end of YEM?
I have yet to hear one that sounds like anything coherent to me. Like the
a capella songs, these vocal jams simply do nothing for me. I will give them
credit for pulling them off, though.

Ugh... who's for ending this thread already?? It's a farse! In my opinion,
there is no *worst* phish song, just the least amazing/intense/special
song, which, off the top of my head, would have to be... hmmm, can't think
of one. Anyway, i like the accapella stuff--it's a good way to end a set,
and it gives the boys a well deserved breather (so to speak:) after some
sick jamming.

Well, if phish has been trying to make thier vocal jams sound coherent all
this time, i guess they're not as talented as i had thought. On tape, i
agree--they do nothing for me, but i love them live... post-weekapaug vocal
jams are another story altogether--let's have more mike solos, and less vocal
jamming in '96! Take it easy y'all...

Reba's one of their best. I'm not the only one who thinks so. Just
listen to the fans chanting Reba one Follow me to Gamehendge boot.

that's funny, because Rift is my favorite CD.

I don't like Tweezer a whole lot. I was thrilled to find out about a
30-min version on A Live One.
