12/5/97 and the 17 min. Julius!!!!

since not being able to download new shows i have gone back to the
older stuff. i put in the 12/5/97 which i never owned until now. wow,
what a show, and what a julius!!!!
the show opens w/ a Ghost>Wilson>Funky Bitch>black Eyed katy which is
explosive. then a Sparkle>Jim>My Friend, My Friend. the segue from Jim
to MFMF is very interesting.
second set opens w/ a tasty stash. the highlight for me is the 17 min.
julius. the tune is onfire smokin until about the 8 min. mark, and
then it gets really interesting.
this got me thinking, and i started to pull out some more of my fall
97's, and honestly, this tour was off the hook.
you have the two night Hampton run, nuff said. the worcester runaway
jam marathon. the next night w/ the 18 min funky bitch. the 12/3 set
two w/ the bowie>possum>jam>caspian. clevelands 17 min. Julius. the
12/7/97 nuff said. the 12/11 debut of roses. then the NYE run nuff
said.
so what do you think? am i just partial due to the 8 shows i saw on
this tour, or was this tour as good as my warped mind thinks?

other hand hold that fall tour and the 97 europe tour close to my
heart. i guess that's the "cow funk" era?

I honestly don't think enough -can- be said about Fall 1997. You
didn't even mention what I consider the best show of that tour: 11-23
Winston-Salem. Then there was what I might consider the "prettiest"
Phish jam I've ever heard in the 11-16 Timber, the insane 11-17 first
set and post-JBG jam, 12-13 Ya Mar, the birth of what would become
BOAF in the 12-12 Piper and Caspian jams. I think every single show
of this tour has something really really interesting going on. Hell,
no one EVER mentions 11-13, but listen to that Stash and let me know
if it does anything for you. Improvisationally, I think it's the
pinnacle of what the band has been able to accomplish...I LOVE August
'93, November '94, and Fall '95...but I don't think the -jams- in
those tours were as plentiful, exploratory, or 'random' as Fall '97
fare. That's obviously a pretty subjective opinion, but I'm sticking
to it.

don't forget 12/2/97! the mikes>simple>dog faced boy>ya mar>weekapaug
gets my vote for best mikes of the tour. the segue from ya
mar>weekapaug has to be heard to be believed. the only thing that
prevented this show from being epic was the set closing bouncin,
character and the ginseng sample encore. the first set has a sick
opening triplet of burried>DWD>maki, followed by a raging chalkdust
and a ghost>divided.
a must hear from fall '97.

to '94 to a '03. It's only in the past few years or so I've been able
to download full runs as they happen and listen to them. But I think
after I've caught up with the Fall and NYE shows I might dig out what
I've got and fill the gaps based on these suggestions and listen
through. I did it a while ago with Fall '94 based on some suggestions
brought up here and loved it. A 17 min Julius? Yes please! :)

At the 12/5 Cleveland show, I recall seeing a guy of about 50 in a
cowboy hat and boots. Throughout the show, he sat quietly, maybe bobbed
his head a bit. At the end, he got on his feet and cheered, hands
clapping above his head.
Btw, I am presently listening to Live Phish Radio on iTunes playing
12/1/95 Theme.

12/1/95 Theme is right up with 12/29/97 as my favorite version of that
song. The 12/1 1-2 punch of DWD -> Theme is one of most often played
combos. PerfectPHiSH.
