not only are they heat more heat resistant...but their's a fair amt. of
difference in quality, that you can easily notice...i like to use XLII-S when i
get a Daud/1 or Daud/2 show...otherwise it's not worth it, only if you get
something really hq, use XLII-S's, because then you want to preserve the
quality as much as possible...email me if you have any questions...peace

or you could use MX-S, better all around, and wide dynamic range, well at least
use those for 1st gens.

of course MX-S's will fuck up your tape deck when you play them.

XLII-S tapes are just superior all around to the XLII. They have
better tape, better shell, and better acoustics (lower hiss - "bigger"
sound). I used to use them for my prize tapes, and even the extra gen
was hardly noticed if I had spun them again. Definitely worth the
extra $$ but if your on a budget you might want to use them for the
GREAT shows.

The only difference is the tape case and the tape itself is double
coated. IT IS STILL A TYPE II TAPE AND THERE IS NO SONIC IMPROVEMENT
OVER XL-IIs. THIS IS ALSO STATED BY TERRAPIN TAPES. The only way to get
better fidelity is to go to metal as staed before...but given that the
source is an audience tape, IMHO, metal is overkill. We're not dubbing
studio masters of classical music here-just low-fi audience tapes.

here is the info on the xlii-s direct from terrapin tapes (ttapes.com)..

"Maxell's XLII-S product is a step up from the XLII tape. The two main
differences between the XLII and XLII-S is that the XLII-S has 2 coatings of a
finishing material that helps to preserve the tape over time. The XLII only has
one coating. Also, the shell on the XLII-S is heat resistant where the XLII
shell is not. This is important if you plan on using the tape in your car or
any place where temperature varies greatly."
