XLII-S tapes are just superior all around to the XLII. They have
better tape, better shell, and better acoustics (lower hiss - "bigger"
sound). I used to use them for my prize tapes, and even the extra gen
was hardly noticed if I had spun them again. Definitely worth the
extra $$ but if your on a budget you might want to use them for the
GREAT shows.

"Maxell's XLII-S product is a step up from the XLII tape. The two main
differences between the XLII and XLII-S is that the XLII-S has 2 coatings of a
finishing material that helps to preserve the tape over time. The XLII only has
one coating. Also, the shell on the XLII-S is heat resistant where the XLII
shell is not. This is important if you plan on using the tape in your car or
any place where temperature varies greatly."
