Has anyone ever hear the original version of Yamar? Phish.net says it
was by the Mustangs. I have searched Napster and never found it. If
anyone has an mp3 of it, email me - I'd love to get ahold of that!!!
Curious about that band...

I am unsure if this is true, but this is the Yamar story as i was told.
Mike (I believe) heard some local reggae band play it when they were
visiting somewhere down south or some island paradise and thought it would
be a good one for the band. If that is the story, I doubt there is any mp3
available.

Hope it helps, and let me know if that is not the story.

I heard the same story although it was a Calypso band not Reggae. I also want
to say that he heard the song long before Phish and it was that Calypso band
(The Mustangs?) that inspired him to play bass.
I wish it was on TV cause then we'd know it was true.

There are numerous references to the Mustang's Story. I don't have the exact
references available, but I've read different interviews, and got to ask Mike
himself about it.

Basically, he was on vacation in the Bahamas with his 'rents at a young age
...early teens at the latest. Chilling at the pool, hears the band, is blow
away by the music , particularly the bass, decides in the back of his head that
he would like to play a bass, buys the cassette of the band they have for sale,
comes home, all the songs EXCEPT YaMar are total keyboard synth cheese. Years
later turns the band onto the track, Yamar, Phish plays it etc, blah blah blah,
on the original tape version, the keyboard player is named Leo, in the break
they encorage him, "Go Leo, Play Leo etc" thus Trey's refferences to Page as
Leo stem from the original recording. As far as finding this, Mike at times
has made offers to dub his cassette for a few fans but to my knowledge that has
never happened or circulated. Finding a copy of a obscure resort band with a
few self produced tapes to sell to tourist in the late 70s isnt very likely.
Id love to hear it.

This is so weird. This thread comes up right after I post this dealio
about how my own FATHER may have found the ORIGINAL version of Ya Mar
while on a cruise to the Bahamas this past summer. Look, I posted this
earlier and it's pretty clear in my mind that Cyril Ferguson wrote Ya
Mar. I even put an mp3 of his version (from '74) on my website until
all you freaks downloaded like rabbits and the Mindspring powers that
be started in on me with the threatening email. I'm gonna leave my
system up ALL DAY today (Friday 9/15/00) and I also have Napster. Do a
search on Cyril Ferguson (artist) or Ya Mar and you will find me. The
Mustangs were probly a cover band in some hotel that played for drinks
and food everynite. Most bands of this nature dont put out mp3s. Check
out the version I got and get the 411. Sorry to be so short about this
but Im a bit tipsy and didnt get laid at the bar AGAIN!!! (for the
5,947,823rd time ;-). All jokes aside, please enjoy my mp3. The
guitar is pretty cool and its a nice little history of Bahamas music
(if not Phish covers).

Love,

My post was a direct reply to yours maybe you were tipsy and didnt notice me
thanking you for putting this up.

The other idea was this Cyril cat probably wrote it but the version Mike was
familiar with and taught the band with could have been a cover version of the
cyril penned Bahamian hit

resort bands usually play popular covers not originals at poolside gigs, at
leats this ha been my experience.

once again thanks.. and Red stripe is the Jamican Beer...Kalik is the deal in
the Bahamas

Bob's theory.....hehehehehe.

I just like the sound of that for some reason.

Yeah, me thinks that this Cyril tune was picked up by all the local
cover bands at the hotels in the Bahamas. Its a great song. I should
also expound a bit further on this 2 CD set my Dad got and tell you
that ALL of the tracks were recorded at G.B.I Studios in Freeport and
this guy named Frank Penn produced and engineered them all. He appears
to be a bigwig in the "recording industry" of the Bahamas. These cover
bands probably buy his stuff and then look for cool songs to cover in
between the Jimmy Buffet, Bob Marley, and other tropical favorites. Ya
Mar is just such a cool song - gets you on that dance floor quick. I
have my own little fantasy of chillin' by the pool, watchin' the
ladies, sippin' on fruity rum cocktails and listening to one of these
cover bands playin Ya Mar with a steel drum kit, congas, etc. Nice
warm breezes, lots of sunshine. OK, getting on the phone to the travel
agent now...:-)

A mere 20 years later the same thing happen to me. I once knew the chords to Ya Mar, but had forgotten them and went to look them up again on Emil's tabs, and saw that the song was credited to the Mustangs. When I thought of it, I said oh my God does have a 60's feel. But I could not find a recording of it. However on YouTube there is now an audio only recording ofCyril Ferguson, original member of the Mustangs, performing the song. Worth a listen.
