[This was already posted by another kind phan, but I figured I should
post it myself. For direct delivery of my updates, please sign up for
the phishhook-announce mailing list at egroups.com. ALSO, PLEASE PASS
THIS ALONG TO ANYONE WHO MIGHT NOT GET IT SOME OTHER WAY.-- Leonard]

Did you find yourself in a really weird predicament tonight? You sat
down at the computer, fired up the old 28.8, opened your browser, and
nothing happened? I did.

I know. What are you supposed to do with your time when the hook isn't
coming up? Well, I'll tell you what I generally do.... I sit on the
phone for hours waiting for customer service.

That's what I did tonight. Apparently the little date problem
Phishhook.com was having today was enough of a problem to warrant
taking the whole machine offline. Without warning, of course.

The date isn't the only problem though. Apparently there are a
number of problems. Most of them are unimportant to you.... except one.

That's right folks, it's that time of year we all dream of. That time
we tell our friends, children, and loved one's about.
The "What's Going To Happen To Phishhook.com" time.

As a preface to the story, I'd like to say that the site costs me a
total of $25.00 per month. It is a great deal, but it is too good to
last.

While on the phone with customer service they mentioned that I have an
outstanding balance:

"How could that be?"

Well, apparently I was over the bandwidth limit for the last couple of
months.

"But I don't have a bandwidth limit?"

I was informed that I should read the fine print of the contract. The
fine print gave one reason why I could be violating it. The site may
take up too much computing time on their servers. But I don't know
that is true, and they haven't shown me anything that says it was true.

In fact, they never even told me that I was exceding the limit.
Their fine print says they'll give me a two day warning if I excede the
limit. I never hear from them.

What does all this mean for you? A little uncertainty for a while. I
will be in negotiations with the hosting company over the fine print,
and we'll see what happens.

PHISHHOOK.COM IS NOT GOING DOWN

I don't know what is going to happen, so don't freak out on me.
Worst case scenario will be that I move the site again. But this time
I may move the site to a privately owned DSL line. This WILL slow down
your access to the site, but it will also ensure that
Phishhook.com will stay up for a long time.

Best case scenario, someone with a fat pipe and a powerful machine
(capable of running Perl, Java, etc.) decides that they are wasting too
many computing cycles idling and they really have to donate it to
Phishhook.com. (Please contact me.)

So, stay tuned here for more information. I'll try to keep you up to
date.

Oh yeah, I can't forget the big wrench I need to throw into the mix.
I'm leaving for Italy next Friday. I will be gone for two weeks. This
is horrible timing, but it means that Phishhook.com could be down for a
couple of weeks. If this happens, stay tuned here. I realize this is
going to ruin your trading, but go do something. Go on tour. Get a
job. See your wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend. Go outside. I hear
Summer just passed. Take a break so you'll be all warmed up for when
Phishhook.com is back online.

Last thing, go to egroups.com to sign up for the phishhook discussion
mailing list. This will give you the opportunity to keep in touch with
other phishhookers. You don't have to have it delivered to your
mailbox. You can read it online.

Thanks for hanging in there,

Leonard

Just to let you know, the hosting company has completely shut off all
access to the site to you and me. I can't get in to get any of the
data from the site. I was able to save most of the files from the site
last night before they shut it down. But I wasn't able to get the
database in time. This means that they are essentially holding
phishhook.com data for ransom. I'll contact them over the weekend, but
it won't likely be until Monday or Tuesday before we get this resolved.

If you want to email me, you can do so at phis...@megliola.com. DO
NOT send me email asking for access to you data or asking when the site
will be back up. I can't get your data, and I don't know when the site
will be back up.

BUT THE IMPORTANT thing is that I will do my best to get your data. It
may cost a bunch, but I'll get it.

I realize this puts a huge dent in your trading, but there isn't much I
can do about it. If you aren't happy about the inconvenience, you are
more than welcome to move your stuff to another site when
phishhook.com comes back up. db.etree.org allows people to import
their phishhook.com lists.

First off, I want to thank Leonard for starting up and maintaining
Phishhook.com. I've been using the service for a few months now and
found it to be the easiest way to get my CD-R collection on the web for
everyone to see and maintain it anywhere in the world (no uploading my
list to a server over and over again, no need for HTML editor, very
cool). I also respect his wishes to remain in compliance with the
Phish taping/trading policy (as well as other band's policies) about
profiting from the band's music in any fashion. However, this non-
profit clause is butting heads with the powers that control bandwidth
on the Net. It seems to me that Leonard should be able to raise SOME
funding (through banners, contributions, whatever) in order to keep
Phishhook on the Net. I understand that the band doesn't want people
making money off the music, but if he kept books showing that the
revenue never exceeded the cost of the additional traffic/bandwidth
(the remainder could go to Waterwheel or some other charity perhaps)
then me thinks it should be legal. I ran into a similar problem with
posting that Cyril Ferguson "Ya Mar" mp3 a few weeks ago, though I
shoulda known that a 3.7Mb file transfer is gonna eat a significant
chunk of bandwidth pretty quick. The point is that Leonard isn't
selling these tapes/CD-Rs himself, only providing a service to help
find them (and it isn't even close to the extent that a service like
Napster does....but I don't want to open up that can here). So, what
do you guys think? Is it time to start petitioning the band to allow
such ventures the ability to stay online so long as they never garner
any profit? I'm interested in some of your reactions.

If its gonna cost leonard money to get our data back, i think we phishhookers
should chip in a bit...what do you think?

You guys should realize that Leonard can't take money to run the site.
It's against the taping/trading policy of Phish and others. He wrote
about this once on the site and even talked about getting email from
organizations telling him he couldn't raise funds. This is what my
post was about. We need to tell Phish that Leonard should be able to
raise enough funds to pay for the excessive bandwidth. Any
overdraft "profit" monies would go to Waterwheel. Everybody wins.

Let's do this,
