I never knew that "be good family" was a group of people. It seems like a very
simple, positive message....i reallly dont understand how resentment or
negativity can be drawn from a shirt...but then again, i havent really paid any
attention to the slogan representing a group at large...

i'll be on the lookout this summer though....

It isn't the shit....the shirt is just a symbol. The are exploiting an entire
race....They disgust me. I do believe in Karma and I do believe shit is coming
around for those fuckers

how? exploiting a race? I heard a bit about what you were saying the other
day as far as the symbol on their shirt being myan, but what's wrong with
admiring a certain aspect of an ancient culture? Its not like they advertise
their clothes AS being myan, but rather, just as good family. And if they
promote good family, then wouldn't karma be on their side? Also, another
thought that I had was, most people wearing this shirt in public will be seen
by individuals that have NO clue what the shirt, the symbol, or where it came
from means. So, again, in the end its just advertising a very simple message
of good family.

If there's more to the story please tell. I'm not trying to argue with you,
but perhaps i'm missing something besides the obvious.

peace
Jim

They are using sacred glyphs on their shirts and selling them for a
profit....One of the glyphs used is representative of a rite of passage that
involves piercing the penis so that it bleeds....I asked one of the kids that
is supposedly in charge of the tshirt design if he knew what the glyph meant
and he looked at me (with a straight fucking face) and said "It's Mayan
bro...It means peace"

NEWSFLASH.....The mayan people were not hippies. grrrrrr

see, that makes a bit of sense. So the kids making the shirts are historical
morons...misinterpreters...

did you try to reason with the guy in charge, and tell him what it really
means, and that perhaps they should consider another symbol? and if they like
the myan culture, or artwork, perhaps you could even bring them a mayan sybol
of peace, or something similar in nature.

Regardless of the manufacturers ignorance to the cultures which they attempt to
represent, I think that the "clear" message in the shirts outweighs the
underlying "badness."

But again, given your interest and knowledge in the people, I can see very
easily how it would be a bit disturbing to you, and to others who know a bit of
background info. hell, maybe i'll see em in a different light at my next
show...or even ask them about the cultural nature of the clothes and see if i
can dig a bit of responsibillity...

money complicates simple things...

Is it really that big a deal? I mean, do people have to harbor all this

No, you have to pretend that YOU know the "real" meaning in Mayan symbology.
Either that or try to overcompensate for your lack of real world skill and
charisma by claiming to be any number of other internet losers.....

Maybe you could give sophomoric
Astrological readings while calling "New-Agers" idiots?....

i've always been skeptical of the 'be good family' crew, as most that i've seen
wearing the gear have outwardly appeared to me (through their appearance and
behavior) to be among the sketchier and shadier kids in the lot. In fact, i've
seen enough people wearing that gear, and behaving in downright hostile manners
that i want nothing to do with anyone wearing the stuff. i know it's a broad
generalization, but that's my impression to date.

a girl also once told me a story (and this has only tangential relation, and is
also probably not indicative of the larger populance) of how she attended a
rainbow gathering, where many of those shirts were in the crowd, and had an
awful time as these same people pressured her into group sexual situations. it
may have been her unique experience, but her story has always stuck with me.

Wow.
You read some books written by people who are GUESSING at what those symbols
meant...
Get a clue....
They don't know what those symbols mean and neither do you, but you could
still make yourself look like an ass by pretending you "know" about a culture
thats been extinct for ages....

Try to talk about what you know, not what you think will impress people, then
maybe you wont seem like such a retard.

clue me in boy

ever heard of the oral tradition? We do know what many of the glyphs mean and
what they depicted.

>but you could

I know very little.....but I also probably know more than you in regards to
mayan cosmology.

I know about the history of the Mayan people.

Not trying to impress anyone....heh...rmp....a bunch of faceless strangers (for
the most part)...what exactly do I have to gain from trying to impress anyone
in this forum. When was the last time you gave any sort of input into this
newsgroup other than these weak attempts at getting my goat. Post some phish
content....maybe a tour story.....or maybe one of your own experiences with
something that you know about. Or you could just continue with this child like
rant of yours....Maybe Brett and Lucas can join in....You'd love that eh?

>maybe you wont seem like such a retard.

I've taken the standardized tests....I can assure you that I am not retarded.
