This is an offer of some pre-1993 rare to relatively rare tapes to the
community. Great thanks are due **BILL BOWMAN**, who loaned most of the
following tapes to The Mockingbird Foundation (he actually loaned many
more tapes than those on the following list!). I also make this offer
in thanksgiving for Rosemary's Digest and Rosemary Mackintosh's
efforts over the last two years. Her Digest will be missed!!!
The only requirement of this tape offer is that you send me a
reasonably polite request that includes reasons (other than the fact
that the show is rare) for why you want a particular show. Clearly,
it helps if you mention that you will dub/weed the show for others
(and do so with a public message to ph...@phish.net with me cc'ed),
but this is *NOT* required.
I'll be accepting *EVERYONE* who responds coherently and sincerely,
since there is a one show per person limit (do not request more than
one show, or, rather, more than two tapes, please). If you send me an
email and don't hear back from me for several days, feel free to try
again. If you can write a good tape request, don't hesitate to do so
pursuant to this offer even a week or two after this message gets
posted. I respond to all sincere private email, and always have (but
my server has been unreliable at times!). If it takes me less time
to read your tape request than it does to flip two tapes, you aren't
going to get tapes from me, so please don't waste your time.
The only other catch is that the quality of the following tapes ranges
from Hissy, Annoying & Barely Listenable Even With Equalization
Audience Quality (D/D+/C-/C)... to Incredibly Kind Phatty Dank cDSBD-1
Easy A+ Quality. And I'm not telling you the quality beforehand,
because I'm an arrogant, snotty prick, but also because I only want
those people to respond to this offer who *really* *want* a particular
show and don't really give a Rift about the quality. And by the way
[evil Jabba the Hut laughter], references to generation should not be
relied upon to gauge quality. [evil grin]
If the tapes you receive pursuant to this offer are shitty quality
(which is possible), I'd recommend that if you decide to dub them for
other folks, that you make it clear that the quality is shitty (i.e.,
"very hissy, barely tolerable without equalization, and even with
equalization, the tapes still basically sound SCHWAAAAAG, d00d").
There's nothing worse, in my opinion, than a tape offer (or weed or
TREE..) of shitty tapes with no cautionary language expressly
describing the shittiness of the tapes being offered. And there are
definitely some shitty quality tapes among the following (but many of
the shitty quality tapes contain some kickass Phish, imo!).
The following list is *not* a list of all rare or relatively rare
tapes, of course. My first show isn't on this list (sniff), and I
still haven't heard THAT show since 10/6/89. Ironic, isn't it!?!?!?!?

I originally read through this list (after reading the post) out of
curiosity to see what was on here, not expecting to reply until I saw...
> 09/26/91 State Theater, Ithaca, NY both sets 180
I just started listening to Phish relatively recently (Winter/Spring
1996), partially due to my own stupidity (I continually put off checking
them out because the only people I knew who liked them were deadheads.)
One of my friends who I hadn't seen in years was the one who eventually
turned me on to them.
This is relevant because since then I've been attamepting to track down
the shows they've played in this area in a sort of morbid quest to see
what exactly I've missed. After hearing the 12/14/95 (I think it was
the 14th, anyway) Broome County Arena show, I've been giving Jesse crap
for not taking me when he went (that would have been the first time I'd
heard them if I'd gone, but I didn't even know about the show until he
and two of my ex-bandmates came back from the show.) (Oh, and BTW,
thanks again for that tape, which I got from you when you did a
different tape offer...)
So, to get back to my point, when I can I get shows from the area (of
which there are plenty), but the two at the State Theater are ones I am
particularly interested in hearing. Sure, I've been to the Haunt a
zillion times and seen countless bands there (and seen the Lawn Boy-era
promo picture on the wall with the pictures from tons of other bands who
have played there, lots of ska and reggae bands and a few other "big"
bands who played the Haunt when no one had heard of them - most notably
Pearl Jam.) And I saw They Might Be Giants at Bailey Hall at Cornell,
which is another venue Phish played, and there's another Broome County
Arena show from 94 (which is when I first heard of Phish - they sold out
the arena quicker than anyone else ever had, and I was also working for
a deadhead guy who liked Phish.)
BUT, besides the fact that I now live within three blocks of the State
Theater (because I also live within three blocks of the Haunt, and that
I saw Bela Fleck play there last year (two weeks before my first Phish
show). I've seen concerts at most of the upstate (not just local)
venues where Phish has played, but the State Theater is the only one
where I've also played. At the time (Feb 95), I didn't know I was
playing on the same stage where Phish played twice in 1991, but since
finding out, I have wanted to hear those two shows. It's some kind of
weirdo musician thing I think. Or maybe it's just me.
Cheers!
John
PS: If I receive this tape, I will, of course, dub copies for B&P, as I
always do for any tapes I get from offers. And speaking of offers, I
still haven't made a public offer for the Dec 29, 1995 show, so here it
is: if you've read this far and you'd like the show, send me an email
before 11:59 PM Saturday and it's yours for blanks and postage.
