what a hard question...because 'artist' is so broad (no pun intended) and
there so many females whose work i love. right now my favorite female
artist would be sylvia plath. forget female, she may be my favorite poet
that I have ever read. one of my recent favorites is Carolyn Keene, the
author of the Nancy Drew books. recently i have been going to used book
stores and buying every nancy drew book they have. they are so incredibly
good I read about two of them a day.

I don't even have any of her albums, but i'm gonna give a nod to Bjork. Me and
my amigos think she's one of the only female artists that completely transcends
being a "female artist" and is just a great artist. Not that there's anything
wrong with say an Ani or an Alison Krauss, they're both incredible, but they
still make music that is decidedly female, it's who they are, but their
messages and music are still coming from IMHO a feminine perspective. But Bjork
manages to transcend gender or genre or whatever and just makes great music
that isn't afraid to be different, challenging, and confrontational. Hell,
Bjork kind of transcends being just a vocalist and is like her own unique
instument.

My 2 cents,

you say this as if playing from a feminine perspective were a liability...in my
opinion, most (and i mean MOST, including phish) male artists play from a male
perspective, and yet this is not mentioned as being a liability to
THEM...interesting...with very few exception, music generated by female voices
are distinctly different than music generated by male voices, and vice
versa...you just don't notice the male voice, i think, because it is your
own...

No, it's not a liability, there's nothing wrong with music that sounds more
feminine, or girls voices, anything like that, i'm not trying to bash female
artists. Ani and Alison and Bjork are all supremely talented artists. I'm just
more in favor of female artists that do their own thing completely. I just
think there's too much mediocrity in the female singer/songwriter genre, though
there's still PLENTY of great artists doing that style. However, i think too
many girls are inclined to pick up an acoustic guitar and do the
"singer/songwriter" thing than look past that and create different kinds of
music. I know there's women doing pretty much every kind of concievable music
out there, and doing it well. But generally when you hear a new female artist,
they're doing singer/songwriter or some mainstream pop thing. I just wish more
teenage girls would set their sites on playing full on rock, jazz, blues, punk,
metal, electronica, everything. I know some do, but i wish more did. And yes,
Liz Phair rules.

understood...much appreciated...to continue the discussion, perhaps women as a
"group" are more inclined to this style...i.e. more soulful "this is me"
artistry? stripped, or whatever you want to call it...introspective...meek?
wrong choice of words...i guess my point is that if art is expression of truth,
perhaps this might explain the differences in choice of expression between men
and women...meaning, woman's true nature (collectively...and yes, there are
exceptions) is more truthfully expressed in, as you say, "singer/songwriter"
terms...just a thought...

a disclaimer: i LOVE women, and if my statements came across as sexist or
whatever, please believe me when i say that that is the OPPOSITE of what i was
intending, and forgive me...

I think the word you're looking for is "confessional." Yeah, women tend to
write more confessional songs or poems or whatever than men do - who knows
why. I can certainly think of quite a few male "artists" who write
confessional songs, but people tend to think of it as a folksy feminine
sub-genre. They totally forget that Bob Dylan perfected the form.

There ya go. Everyone please buy "Mingus." It' Joni's words to Charles
Mingus' songs, with Herbie Hancock on keys, Jaco Pastorius on Bass,
Wayne Shorter on Sax, and of course Joni singing and playing guitar.
It is beautiful, sublime music.
