I think wonderwall is the only cover on any of ryan adam's albums. and I like
his version.

actually I like it. I don't agree that artists should wait a long time
before covering another artist's songs. Think about in the 60s when artists
were covering each other's songs briefly after they were originally
released. I.e., all the artists covering Dylan (Jimi, Clapton), Wes
Montgomery and Grant Green covering Beatles, etc. I think it's kind of
cool. It kind of reminds me of the Tin Pan Alley days when there was
greater focus on performance than composition.

meh. i think he could have done more with the song than just play it
almost the way it was originally done. i hear what you're saying about
the 60's tunes, but i thought the wonderwall cover was less than
inspiring. besides, didn't dylan write most of those songs *for* the
artists who recorded them and then made his own version later?

The only one I can think of is Watchtower for Jimi. There's a ton of
other examples where artists just liked the other bands songs and wanted to
interpret it into their own style. Something happened between then and now
that bands don't do that anymore (ego?).

not ego. the way i understand it, licensing played more of a part in
bringing that practice down than any other reason. atlantic didn't want
to have to pay for some song from columbia, etc.

where I live. Get this....Richie Havens claims that HE wrote All Along
the Watchtower. Seriously. He told this story about how he was
playing it in clubs in the Village and one night "this kid" came up and
asked if he could play it, etc. I don't know if I believe this story.
I actually don't believe it. But why would he say that? I went home
and dug up my John Wesley Harding LP and the song is credited to Dylan.
