I overheard a rumour about the B-Boys being pissed at Phish for covering
sabatoge. Is this rumor ture, can anybody else back this rumour or give any
other info you might have on this subject. Thanks

Well if it is, then Phish should be pissed at the Beastie Boys for
stealing their photo idea for the new Beasties album cover.

Don't get me wrong...I'm one of the Beastie's biggest supporters...have been
since Paul's Boutique. But, if they're gonna pissed about someone else
covering one of their songs in concert a couple of times, perhaps they better
take a step back and look at themselves.
Listen to your first two albums, guys.

Well they better just build a bridge, and get over it. There is only one
reason they should be pissed, and that is because Phish can play "Sabotage"
better then they can. Besides, the B-boys stole the idea for their new albumn
cover (tuna can idea), from a picture of the Vermont Boys, Phish, 1996
Rollingstone's article, on Phish, which was published right after Billy
Breathes came out. So I would say things are even. Why can't everyone just
get along and be friends? That's what I wanna know.

hey now! actually this interview with mike D appeared the day of their
show at the Continental Airlines Arena. I dont have the entire thing, or
a link! But the basic jist of it was the Mike D. expressed his concern
that he hoped this song was not jammed out, like most of Phish's other
tunes. Id have to say bboyz returned the favor at the meadowlands,
producing a really sick Destiny Unbound Jam rite before Benny and the
Jets. WOO!

peace.

Songs are copyrighted, inventions are patented... semantics aside, here's
the scoop. You do not need the permission of the writer to perform a
song. There was a punk band in the 70s that recorded a Paul Simon song to
get back at him for saying how much he hated punk music. There was
nothing he could do to prevent them from doing this. The artist is still
entitled to royalties, although I'm not sure if that is the case for live
performances, it may be the case that royalties are only collected if a
song is commercially released.

better. Need 10/30, 10/31 Please, 1 for each nite. Peace!

No. Your ASCAP/BMI dues (actually, those of the venue) cover such matters.
BTW- it's *patented* and they don't patent a song, they copyright it.

I heard an interview with Mike D and he wasn't really pissed. He just said he
thought it probably wasn't true, but if it was he hoped they didn't solo. I
thought it was kind of funny!

I've seen Phish do Sabotage, and I've seen the Beasties do Sabotage this
summer, and let me tell you, the Beaties Sabotage was a million times better
than Phish will EVER play it.

Hey -
Thought this might interest some of you - it's the 'official' B-boy reaction
to Phish doing Sabotage (I asked the question myself), from an on-line chat
sesh with Mike D from Detroit. The entire text can be found at

http://www.beastieboys.com/crtlrm/tour/auburnhills/auburnhillswords.html

but I just included the vital stuff here.

Also, for those of you who have been wondering why the hell you haven't
heard from me on Adopt-a-Phreak for like, nine months, I've been maintaining
an extremely low profile (obviously) an will continue to do so until I
return from Italy in mid-October, at which time I will devote much effort to
hooking all you newbies up with shows. Sorry about that, y'all. Don't
reply to this address - use the one below.

Jello...@aol.com

Quoted text follows:

Welcome to our live chat with Mike D.
He'd like to start by bypassing some of the questions and talk about
something that's a big issue for Bill Rahmy right now...
MIKE: Bill would like me to talk to the kids about not getting arrested in
Philly.
BILL: Anyone throws a cheese stick at the stage is out!
MIKE: Tofu cheese steaks only in Philly, please.
Mike is discussing tonight's wardrobe with folks...brb...
OK. Adam and Mike are arguing over lyrics...
We'll get this underway in a minute....
Mike is trying to leave on the electric scooter...
But we're keeping him here...
Mike would like to establish a chat agenda:
1. Tofu cheese steak
2. Prison realities in Philly
3. Straightening out Bob Mack
4. Those hippie bastards covering Sabotage.
OK. We're going to start accepting questions now.

<snip>

JelloPants has the following question for the speaker: "Well, what about
Phish covering Sabotage?"

[Mike D:]
As far as we know it's just a rumor, however if this is true...
a) we hope that noone is kicking the sack while the song is being played
b) I hope there are no solos

I can't really tell a tone here...was he being sarcastic, or pissed?

Has anyone here ever seen Mike D interviewed? When asked questions like,
"Who was the woman singing on the new album," he gives answers like, "Are
you familiar with the singer Tiffany?" So I'm pretty sure, in answering my
question, he was

a) joking, but
b) serious

We may never know. I may never care. Either way, 'pissed' ain't even
close. Maybe he's just trying to screw with you, you 'hippie bastard.'

Can anyone tell my tone? Am I being sarcastic, or am I pissed? Do you
know? Do I? More importantly, does Mike D? Even more importantly, does it
matter?

What I want to see now is Beastie Boys cover Fuck Yer Face.

Puttin all sorts of shame in the game you got,
BJ

PS - I don't really think you're a hippie bastard. But Mike D does. I was
quoting him re-directly.

Actually, Mike D is MY lil hippie bastard....when we're alone.....

You bring up a good point, as much as i like the Beastie Boys(i was at one of
their shows when i discovered Phish), i can't see them being able to cover any
of Phish's repetoire, barring the generic ones which any band could
do...whereas, Phish's cover of Sabotage was pretty interesting and close to the
live Beastie Boys version of it.

i could see why the B Boys would be pissed at phish for covering sabotage...
phish probably got a better reception for playing it than the B Boys get when
they play it. think about it... for those who are really into the beasties
(since before license to ill...), sabotage is the ultimate sell-out song for
them. when they played it at the shows i have attended, the reception given by
the audience has been mostly negative (save for that of the fratboys and the
people who insist that they are witnessing a fresh, young band who have just
recently formed : ) )
the b boys realize that they have, for the most part, alienated all of their
true fans, who stuck with them even through the serious time lags between
albums and genre changes.
then phish plays the beasties biggest hit of all-time, generating the same
level of fervor that only matches the beasties original hit- fight for your
right--a welcome high that they have not experienced since 1987. so now what?
the beastie boys will have to cover chalkdust torture or something along those
lines in order to save face. how phat would that be?!?!?!?
if the beasties are pissed at phish, then so be it. i say let phish cover an
entire b boys album for halloween (paul's boutique, maybe?) to really let it
sink in that they are one of the phattest bands ever and the beasties, like it
or not, are very close to the genre due to their constant... rambling...
like... me.... okay, enough. sorry for the WBW, just my .15

Phish is actually going to be covering an album from a little known band
from Albany, New York called Blotto. Blotto had limited success throughout
the 80's with hits such as "I Want to be a Lifeguard" and "Metalhead". To
assist them in this task will be a guest appearance by the B-52's. It will
rock.
