Hi. I`m soon to see the american tenor Frederic Kalt in Otello at the
Opera in Oslo. I do not know much about him except that he is supposed
to be very good, and has been singing much in LA and Houston. Comments
on this will be appreciated.

I've never heard him, but he has been posting quite a bit on the
MUSICARTS Forum on CompuServe lately -- chiefly arguing about Strauss
tenor roles with Jay Azneer.

Frederic is the real thing. His Otello was a big hit in Cologne.

Didn't you hear him as Calaf at DNO last year?

Mvh.

Come on over, Matthew! The premiere of Otello is on 8 February.

I'd love to hear Federic Kalt sing Bacchus, too.

Kalt sang Erik in an LA Dutchman last season. He has a powerful
penetrating voice with an apparently easy top but it's not a thing of
beauty. He didn't make much of an impression on stage but then Erik
doesn't make much of an impression. Incidentally, one poster mentioned
the Cologne Otello. Is that the one that featured Gino Quilico as Iago?
How did he do?

The English periodical Opera Now has a review in the May/June issue. The
review is very favourable for both the singers you mention. Of Kalt the
reviewer says that 'he delivers a stentorian 'Esultate' while lying
prone in bed, and after that never allows his concentration to relax; he
sings the role with almost contemptuous ease, every syllable clean'

Not bad, eh ?

"Esultate" prone? In Bed? Otello? This strikes me as one of those
"Productions I'm glad I missed."

I heard Frederic Kalt one year ago as Otello at Zurich. A very
interesting voice in that role. Seemingly he developed "the" technique
for it: well projected voice, nasal colour, noticeable vibrato. The "old
fashion" tenore di forza, I suspect his model is Francesco Tamagno (no,
he does not approach Tamagno's power). But he has an handicap: he is too
young. Tamagno became a "tenore di Forza" after many years while singing
mainly lyrical roles, Kalt has specialized on Otello from the beginning.
That looks dangerous.
I heard him as Bacchus in May 96. He cracked at the very beginning of his
appearance in the Opera, and did not recover during the whole solo. Then
he got the voice under control, but not completely. He was steadily very
near to crack again. Just an indisposition? I hope so!

In the movie "Serenade" Mario Lanza's character made his debut in Otello!

Frederic Kalt sang a Pinkerton here in Maryland (Annapolis Opera) about 6
or so years ago -- he favourably impressed those who heard it.

There is a video of his Calaf fron Antwerp circulating in the underground
-- he is certainly better than most recent Calaf's, but Corelli isn't
lying awake at night worrying.

Otello, from what I've heard of him, would seem an unwise choice if he
wants a long career. I would imagine that he can't sing it well on just
his "interest" but has to delve into his vocal "capital" as well.

On the other hand, now that Domingo is a bit past his best in a role that
was a stretch to begin with, what other Otello's are there?

Oh, by the way, his Trovatore (audio) also circulates in the underground
froma Vienna performance conducted by Mehta. I understand they were both
booed ...

All that tells me is that neither Frederic nor ZM paid the claque.

About 10-15 years ago I was singing in the chorus in Anchorage Opera
(Alaska) and there was a "Fred Kalt" there who sang a few minor roles (eg,
Ruiz in Trovatore). Same guy? I'd guess he was in his early 20s then....

Just back form Barcelona, where there is a very large hole for the new
opera house.
However every Saturday lunchtime ooutside the Cafe de Opera on the Rambals
there is a concert given to keep the awareness of the need to rebuild the
Opera in time for it's 150th Birthday next year.

I saw two concerts the second was superb, a young singer Maria Costanarda
(spelling maybe slightly wrong) sang an aria from Cosi fan tutte,
Cenerentola, and as a 2nd encore Remeber me from Orfeo. She was
fantastic, given that she has to compete against the traffic.

If anybody has heard of this singer, she's a mezzo, please let me know.

Otherwise if your in Barcelona on a Saturday taken in this free concert
it's really worth it, it starts around 12 and last 30- 40 minutes.

Am I so happy to read your comment! Having lived there for 23 years and
considering the Liceu "my theater", I cried a lot when the fire 2 1/2
years ago, but look forward to the reconstruction. Knowing Catalonians
very well, I know they will achieve it soon. They are well into the
project. contrary to us in Miami, where for many years our new theater
is but a plan on a table.

I am very up to date of the events talking place at Barcelona, and the
Saturday noon concerts have become a staple. A few months ago Carreras
was featured in one.

Most probably you were standing side by side to some of my friends there.
I cannot think of a better scenario for such an event that the wonderful
Rambles, with its heterogeneous public and the simple facade of the
Liceu. Let-s hope that in a couple of years the Opera World can have
again such a magnificent theater (word goes that the hall will be an
exact replica of the old one IMHO the most beautiful in the world).:

He wasn't the big hit in Cologne. It was terrible. He was one of the loudest singers I've ever heard, but he had absolutely no control over his voice. He sounded like he was going to die or explode in the esultate already.
