Licitra was singing Calaf, and I think it was his first with the Met,
and maybe his first ever. He did not really know the role, and sang
poorly. Musically there were six or seven missed entrances, and one or
two early endings. The voice was big, but sounded very open and crude.
There was no applause at all after the Nessun dorma. He sort of got
the B, and held it for about 5 or 6 seconds, but it went white on him.
There was virtually no vibrato in the note, and it sounded very
strange.
The Liu of Kovalevska was ok, and got a big applause at the final bow,
but she sang with no shading at all, The voice is good, but I do like
a Liu that can sing a big piano now and then. All the notes that
Poplavskaya floated in the Fall where sung as loudly as possible, and
many of the nuances were totally missing. The bass Tian sang Timur,
and was ok, but really, the voice is less than half the size of Ramey,
whom I saw in the Fall. Wobble or not, I would take Ramey any day.
Guleghina did not have a good night either. Her top was wobbly, and
she shreiked a few notes badly, such as the C at the end of In questa
reggia. On this same note, I couldn't hear Licitra, but I think he
sang the note.
The conducting was ok, but over all not a good performance, and one,
in retrospect, I easliy could have missed.
I am greatly looking forward to seeing the new Carmen tomorrow night.

A member of MET management who shall remain nameless told me it was one of
the worst things he has ever heard at the MET. Wagner fan
That's a shame, because we are going very soon. I wanted to hear
Kovalevska as Liu; a friend saw her in Washington D.C. last May and
said she was very effective.

I'm going as well later in the month but there may be some cast
changes. Wagner fan
