Hi All,
I have seen a recording of this opera on sale at Tower, with James
Morris (Hollander), Deborah Voigt (Senta), Erik (Ben Heppner) and James
Levine conducting. It is issued by Sony this year. I am wonder has
anyone here heard this recording already and what do you think of it.
Also, what are your top recommendations for this work. Thank you in
advance for your responses.

Jun,
The best recording features H.Uhde, A.Varnay/Knappterbusch at
Bayreuth live (I guess Music & Arts distributes it). Uhde and Varnay are
surely the best couple available.
You can also try George London, Leonie Rysnaek/London ! Excellent
recording!
Best regards,
Sergio

It is reviewed in the last (june 1997) issue of the British 'Gramophone'
magazine (the reviewer is Alan Blyth). The reviewer seems to prefer most
other recordings on the market to this one, his favourite among modern
recordings being the Dohnanyi one on Decca. The reviewer finds much
praise for most of the singers except The Dutchman himself (James
Morris) and Senta (Deborah Voigt); he finds Heppner the best Erik on
record and Paul Groves ideal as the Steersman. The main reservation
about the two principals is that they make so little effect, for which
the main reason is said to be the 'galumphing, alternatively becalmed
and bombastic' conducting of James Levine. (I had to look up
'galumphing', but did not find it in my American Heritage dictionary;
the Pocket Oxford Dictionary defines 'galumphing' as: 'to go prancing in
triumph' which did little to help me; such reviews are hardly aimed at
any international audience and probably not at any broad British public
either.)

I can't imagine this recording is very good. I find Morris particularly
unpleasant these days in German roles (his recent Claggart was
acceptable). Breath and line are totally missing and he fudges the text.
Save your money because this opera has fared very well on recordings.
My personal favorite is the Klemperer on EMI with Silja, Adam and
Talvela (my favorite Daland by a long measure- more warmth and pathos
than most Daland's which can often become a caricature). Also, on this
recording they pronounce the name Mary as we do in English (I like
that).
For you Fi-Di fans there's the Konwitschny also with Marianne Schech
and Gottlob Frick.
And the Bohm with Stewart, a young a radiant Gwyneth Jones and Karl
Ridderbusch.
And if you want a video, there's the excellent Harry Kupfer Bayreuth
production from '85 which has forever changed how I think of this opera.

The best recording is the Klemperer on EMI. My second choice would be the
Philips recording of the Bayreuth production; my third choice would be the
Dorati on London with the best Dutchman I have ever heard or seen, namely,
George London. Nobody could sing this role better than London. I have
wonderful memories of him singing this role on the Met broadcasts and saw
him several times at the Met.

The new recording that you speak about is okay; but I've never been a
Morris fan. I saw him do the role some years ago at the Met -- and I
wasn't so impressed.

So, if you want one of the great Dutchman get the London with London (ha!
ha!). The best all around interpretation and best cast is the Klemperer
on EMI.

I haven't yet heard the new Hollander, but as a recomendation there is
a London recording (417 319-2, recorded 1962). It features:
Leonie Rysanek..........Senta
George London...........Der Hollander
Georgio Tozzi...........Daland
Karl Liebl..............Erik
Rosalind Elias..........Mary
Antal Dorati leads the Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House,
Covent Garden.
It is midprice (or lower--I got it on sale for $18.00). ADD.
Rysanek and London are electrifying.

There was once a London ffrr recording with Uhde & Varnay from the '55
Festival, conducted by Keilberth
which is quite good - I don't know if it's available anywhere anymore, but
I have a mint copy. I've also seen
a Bayreuth performance available on CD with London and Varnay, but the
details escape me at the moment. In any case, my benchmark Dutchman has
always been the old London/Rysanek recording originally on RCA.

One of the writers here is correct, however, this opera has been very well
served by the record companies!

Oh boy, I've hearing so many negative response about Morris on this
role. I hope he fairs better when he comes to SFO later this year.
Otherwise, the SFO Hollander seems to be a doomed production. But,
thank you all for your recommendations. I'll get to work later today,
to hunt for my Hollander.

My favorite Hollander is Solti's on London (414551-2) with:

Norman Bailey (H)
Janis Martin (S)
Martti Talvela (D)
Rene Kollo (E)
Isola Jones (M)
Werner Krenn (St)
Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus

I think all the soloists are simply great, and the
CSO's playing is electrifying.

I'm just listening to the Naxos recording of Dutchman and am very much
impressed by the Erik of Peter Seiffert and Ingrid Haubold's Senta. This
would make a good first recording for anyone, and at the price, it is
also a good supplementary recording.

This particular recording has a large place in my affections. The
Chicago Symphony concerts done in conjunction with the (studio)
recording occurred in the spring of '76 when I was a senior at
Northwestern University. I went with two close friends. It was a
wonderful evening. In the concerts Solti took the 'act endings' so the
orchestra could retune, but the recording follows the more common (and
preferred) practice of playing continuously through.
Despite my sentimental bias, I cannot really place it in the top three
or four recordings (such luxury to be able to talk about so many fine
recordings) of this work. Norman Bailey is great (anyone seen any trace
of that old BBC video production with him and Gwyneth Jones?) and Martti
Talvela is my all-time favorite Daland, but I like his Daland better for
Klemperer (it's such a great role, and the Daland-Dutchman duet is the
heart of the work for me). Kollo also is fine as Erik.
I really hate Werner Krenn's Steuermann, however. It's just too thin
and wimpy (to use technical terms). And Janis Martin leaves me a little
cold as Senta. But overall it's a very respectable recording.

If this is the new Levine Release, I've read some really bad things
about it in Grammophone, or Fanfare (don't recall). I think this one
may not be the best choice, even on sale.

If money is concern, you may want to look at the Naxos recording of
this work. Otherwise, other posters gave suggestions which you may
want to check into otherwise.

Kurt Moll (EMI)

Your comments would be more helpful if you could remember where you saw
the remarks. In a classical
sense that's very sloppy criticism, almost like repeating a rumor.

Although I've heard only chunks of the new recording, I must cast my
vote as not warming to it either.

But, I have to say that having seen Morris in this role on stage and in
concert performance, I find him riveting in it ... but not so on this
recording. His concert performance, in fact, was more dramatic and
poignant than staged (I went twice!). Incidentally, the Senta in the
concert version was Frances Ginzer, who just made her Met debut this
season (as a Norn, I believe). A major talent to keep an eye on.

Paul.

The Levine is certainly not a first choice.

Knappertsbusch with Uhde

Nelsson at Bayreuth with Estes

Konwitschny with Fisher-Dieskau
