She was indeed sensational! Who knew?! ;-)
To clarify, though, there is only one high Ab in this clip, at the top
of the scale she sings at 3:27. There are some high G's, and lots of
Eb's and F's (for instance, the held notes at 5:29 are "merely" Eb and
F, lol - and that sequence ends with repeated high G's at 5:41) - but
only the one Ab. ;-)
Damn impressive, though! ;-)
She's great! I missed the broadcast, sorry to day. As for Calleja, IMO
he can only get better!!!!

The instrument is pretty damn impressive, and now she needs not
stardom but some finishing as to style. I'm not complaining (and I bet
in the house, for a debut, it was sensational), but it's a little
careless (I don't mean that in a moral way, but in terms of the
singing) not in terms of the pinpoint accuracy on top, but a bit on
hitting notes and accurate intonation in the middle, and I wonder if
that was this recital or also the broadcast? If you had a major
conductor or coach who took her in hand for a while, she could be very
good indeed.
I also listened to her Blondchen from New Jersey (I remember people
talking about it on another group), and that is quite impressive, and
better in terms of the style (she obviously had more time to work on
this for a fully staged performance than a recital), and I still begin
to want to see some 'finish' on the phrasing. Out of curiousity, I
turned to the Reri Grist performance of the same aria, from 1980 when
she was 48 or so (!), which is here

Of course you can't compare the two - Grist had been singing this girl
for decades, and had worked for decades with some of the greatest
collaborators in the business. But even without the top Es (which Dr.
Bohm and the audience didn't care about here, and neither did I), you
can hear that 'something' in style and the clarity in pronunciation
that I want GG to aspire to, and get.

A voice with a beautiful sound, and a core!!

Not bad, Ed, but not really great either. Costello's voice has less
innate lyric beauty than that of Calleja, especially when he pushes
and goes for a big sound. The voice seems to change color, if not
become monocromaic. Yes, he hits the money notes, but not with a
"beautiful sound," as you put it. Insomma, la prova non c'é. I doubt
if he is yet ready for prime time, and note that most of his
engagements still seem to be in minor houses. I did record his "real"
Met debut, which was not a particularly memorable Edgardo (not bad,
but not all that good either; certainly, musical history was hardly
made that night). All that notwithstanding, I do think he has the
potential to become a really fine tenor, if the pushing doesn't take a
toll on his voice. He might need a good coach to rein him in a bit.
In short, a work still in progress.

The audience even applauded the set (Venice), which I thought was a
folly restricted to Boston audiences.
Poor Netrebko seemed a bit off her form. (Netrebko is why I make the
weary pilgrimage to New York. On this one, Amtrak broke down in
Providence for four hours. The Christmas travelers broke into the bar,
the train crew fled, and fistfights broke out, which livened things up
a bit.) Perhaps she was annoyed by the attention paid to Gilmore.
