This is from a LP recording of Messiah on the Sine Qua Non label,
recorded, I think, sometime in the early 70's. It's with the Handel
and Haydn Society, conducted by Thomas Dunn. I know virtually nothing
about the tenor, George Livings, and this is the only recording of him
that I've ever heard - but he remains my favorite tenor soloist in
Messiah.

The file, when unzipped, contains MP3's of "Ev'ry Valley" and "Thou
Shalt Break Them" and their preceding recitatives.

Enjoy -

Bill

I believe that Mr Livings (who may now be retired) comes from Texas.
He also recorded the Christmas Oratorio (Bach) with the same forces.

i knew george a bit about forty years ago, then about
fourth on the rung of juilliard tenors. this obscure recording
under the justly forgotten tommy dunn, represents perhaps
george's carreer apogee. glad to hear that someone has a
memento of his pleasant but unmemorable singing.

Shouldn't that be "unzipp'd"? ;-)

George created the role of Edgar Allen Poe in Argento's opera 'The Voyage of
Edgar Allen Poe'. He also sang a handful of Don Ottavi (as Leonard would
say) at the Met in the 70s and 80s.

I knew George also. As I wrote in another post:

Edgar Allen Poe'. He also sang a handful of Don Ottavi (as Leonard would

say) and comprimari roles with the Met in the 70s and 80s.

By the way, have you noticed that Rita is not included in the "Performers
Report" section of the Met Database? Neither is George. Odd.

This is the section I mean: http://66.187.153.86/archives/frame.htm

not at all odd/ you might try in future research to read a bit more
carefully: that database list is of performers with more than 100 met
appearances. all you have to do is go to the key word database and plug
in the name to get the result you want.

He has been a member of the chorus at the opera in Zürich Switzerland
for the last twenty years.

Yes, you're quite right. I did use the second method, but I completely
overlooked the "more than 100" point. Thanks for your almost civil reply.

Warmly yours,

Actually, if you listen to him sing, it's "her iniquity is accomplished,"
and not "her iniquity is accomplish-ed".

It's interesting, thanks, but I think I have a couple of other preferences.
Among light voices, I think hors concors is Aksel Shiotz (or whatever ) - I
think he only did the opening aria -at least that's all that's on volume 1
of the collected performances of his, but we lost a superb artist when he
became ill.

I like this guy's ornamentation and lack of forcing, although I agree with
Dan that the sound is undistinguished in itself, and to my ears (or at least
my cheap speakers), a bit throaty. The other light tenor I like in this is
Anthony Rolfe Johnson, but then I like him in almost everything he did until
the last decade or so. I have to go back and listen to the Simoneau - maybe
I'll do that tonight. Among the heavier voices, Vickers I with MacMillan is
mighty impressive.
