The one that Henry Fogel posted was on Exclusive EX92T08/09, but there
may well be other labels that have it--it used to be on gray-market LP,
Memories label perhaps. Exclusive CDs are full price in the US (US$17 or
so). Sorry I can't help you with the UK sources.

This 1974 performance with Freni and Cappucilli was, indeed, extraordinary. It
was telecast once in (about) 1980 on the old ARTS channel. It has some
technical flaws that are distracting in Act II, but is otherwise outstanding
and the most lyrical performance I have ever seen.
As far as legitimate (commercial) release - don't hold your breath.

I have got a 2CD live recording of the Kleiber Otello in Tokyo 1981 (La Scala on tour). The
cast includes Domingo as Otello, Tomowa-Sintow as desdemona and Silvano Carroli as jago.
I have not had time to listen to it yet, because I got it recentlt.
It is released on ARTISTS Live recordings, FED 020.21.

I think I may have the recording you are talking about. It's Carlos
Kleiber conducting Otello, but it is in 1981, not 1976, and he is in
Tokyo, not at La Scala, but with La Scala's orcestra and choir. The
singers are Placido Domingo, Anna Tomowa-Sintow and Silvano Carolli.
Unfortunately it is very badly marked. The front page says: Carlos
Kleiber Live in Tokyo Volume II, and the label seems to be: Artists Live
Recordings FED 020.21. It's got no libretto or any other information on
the inside. On the back it has the round stamp usually found on all
recordings bought in Italy, but I bought it in a record store in Oslo,
Norway. The price was about 8-9 GBP, and it was about 2 years ago.
It seems to be some kind of pirate recording, but if you can track down
the label Artists Live Recordings which probably is in Italy, maybe you
can find it. Sorry I can't help you further.

Could you please give us some more information about this recording
(cast, sound quality etc.). how does it compare to other recordings
of this opera? (BTW, which is the best (or: are the best) available
recording(s) of this opera? any suggestions?)
Thanks in advance for your help.

There are two different Kleiber Otellos on the market -- one from 1976 and
one from 1981. The 1981 is as described above, from La Scala's company on
tour in Tokyo. The performance was videotaped, and the sound from that
has been released on an Artists CD (FED 020.21). The 1976 performance is
from La Scala itself, and is, IMHO, the better performance. It features
Domingo, Mirella Freni, and Piero Cappuccilli -- all in splendid voice --
and the sparks seem to be a few degrees hotter in that performance than in
the 1981 version (although both are terrific performances). The 1976 one
is available on Exclusive EX92T08/09, and probably other labels as well.
Hope this clarifies it.

I have the 1976 release (recorded Dec 7, 76 - opening night of the new
season) on Exclusive EX92T08/09. I bought it from Music Discount
Centre, St Martins Lane, London a couple of years ago at about UKP 17.
I have seen it since but it one of those items that only comes around
from time to time.
The performance is absolutely tremendous; Kleiber conducts at white
heat and Domingo is on peak form. Freni and Cappuccilli are both
excellent and in good voice.
The recording is good for a pirate - not commercial quality but
perfectly listenable.
Thoroughly recommended.
kind regards
