How terrible - and I believe that he's been ill for a couple of years
(I vaguely remember a mention of him having lymphoma).

One of my favorite modern tenors, although I only saw him live once,
as Dmitri in BORIS at the Met. For whatever reason, his name rarely
came up in discussions about tenors, even when he was younger and
healthy. But he was a genuine spinto, at a time when such singers
weren't exactly thick on the ground.

Most of his recordings are of Russian repertoire, where he really
shone. There are several on the Chandos label, mostly Russian song.
He is Dmitri on a complete BORIS on Sony, conducted by Abbado, and is
my favorite singer of that role on record.

A real tragedy - may he rest in peace.

How sad. He was a wonderful singer and a sexy teddy bear of a man! RIP
Sergei! We love you!

I've just uploaded Rachmaninov's "In the Silence of the Secret Night",
with Larin and Eleonora Bekova, to RMU 1.

As of this morning, the NY TIMES seems not to have deigned to publish
an obit. What did he die of?

Sergej died of a sudden heart attack. I understand he had been making
steady progress after falling ill with pneumonia in New York and his
demise came at a time when he was planning for the future again.

He had been very seriously ill but fought back to resume his career.
There is a clip of him singing in Bratislava in April last year on
Youtube.

Terribly sad loss.

And you can also see some fine singing of him as Pollione here

although you will have to put up with Mme. Mescheriakova's interpretation of
Norma as Donna Reed.

I knew "of" him, rather than knowing his work, especially. From photos
I've seen, he'd lost a greal deal of weight, and--judging by the clip
I just watched of him singing the Flower Song from CARMEN--it seems to
have done him a world of good. he looked terrific, and sounded fine
(to me).

It's a damn shame.
