Hi there,

can anybody tell me whether I'm right ... that Tom Hanks hears Maria
Callas in "Andre Chenier" ?
And if so - on which CD can I find this special recording ?

Thanks in advance ...

Herbert

Yes. He listens to her studio recording of "La mamma morta," which was
included on her disc "Lyric and Coloratura Arias." It is also in her
"La Divina" collection, which I believe are now available as separate
discs.

This aria is also included on various other Callas compilations, most
of which have the movie tie-in ("from the film Philadelphia")
advertised on the cover.

Tangent to this subject, if anyone out there in rmo-land has the CD
entitled "The Opera Lover's Philadelphia"/London, I would really appreciate
your help. My disk (nicknamed "the girls") and its case have become
separated indefinitely (long story) and I *need* to know who is singing some
of the tracks. Several of the voices seem familiar to me, but I'm not sure.
I doubt if this would be of interest to anyone else, so private e-mail
please. Thank you, thank you, thank you...(please forgive my spelling, I'm
doing this by ear, and the opera names, in most cases educated guesses).

Track Title
2 Ecco: respiro appena/Adriana L. (rivals the Callas version I have)
6 Senza mamma o bimbo/Suor Angelica -- that last note kills me
8 Suicidio...in questi fieri momenti/La Gioconda
9 (Can't figure it out but it ends: Io son dannata...etc.)
10 In quelle trine morbide/M. Lescaut
11 Sola, perduta, abbondonata/M. Lescaut, again? (beautiful)

Thanks again,

That's the ending to "Voi lo sapete" from Mascagni's Cavaliera Rusticana.

It's also on the "Philadelphia" soundtrack CD with terrific songs by Bruce
Springsteen and Neil Young as well. :)
